Semi Auto

Smith & Wesson M&P P357c

M&P357c

My first new addition of 2014 is an Smith & Wesson M&P 357c.   It's an interesting little powerhouse, and had I not already had 357 sig reloading components I probably would have passed this compact pistol up.  However after taking it out on our first date and getting a feel for its frame, I think I've grown a fondness for her.  The price of the meal was unbelievable, as .357 Sig ammo prices have only skyrocketed up - on top of the prepanic pricetag that was in the $30 per 50 range.  The only boxes I found locally were $33 for Winchester whitebox 125gr FMJ 50 rounds or $42 for the same offering from American Eagle.  The trade off for the lighter wallet was heavy firepower, the sig round is definitely a snappy performer with a wallop.

Short history of the .357 Sig round: Developed in 1994 by Sig Sauer, the round 9mm bullet in a necked down (but slightly longer) 40s&w case. It's one of the first commercial members of the bottle-neck pistol cartridge family.  The reason behind the design was to match the performance of a .357 Magnum 125gr round fired from a 4 inch revolver, but with a higher capacity semi auto pistol with magazines. Law Enforcement was all over the .357 Sig in the mid-late 90's and early 2000's until the economy tanked and it became much more fiscal to switch back to 40sw or 9mm.

The 357c and its other M&P bretheren have earned a high reputation for concealability, firepower, and overall suitability. As a defensive caliber, its hard to disagree that the .357 sig has an edge.  With an average velocity of 1,385 ft/s and muzzle energy of 532 ft·lb, the projectile has more gas than both its 9mm and 40sw competition.  Penetration averages 12-16 inches depending on bullet type.  This equates to more energy delivered to tissue, and less resistance from barriers and heavy clothing.  In a compact like this M&P, its a great carry platform.  Having 10+1 rounds may seem disadvantageous to some who are legally allowed to carry more, or have the body frame that allows for a full size grip.  But for those who want something smaller and easier to carry, and still have confidence in what the caliber is capable of, the .357c seems like the ticket.  Those with sausage fingers may find three or two digits on the frame is pretty skimpy, and those mag extenders with the pinky ledge maybe something worth getting.  Just be sure to pick up that brass, because its not something you come across at the range often and even if you do not reload, someone out there does and will be grateful to do business with you.

To address the affordability of future dates with this dame, I picked up a conversion barrel from Storm Lake in 9mm.  The barrel was about $150 after tax and shipping, and will surely pay for itself after a few range sessions.  I picked up a couple 17rd full size 9mm magazine (thank you Washington State for not trying to limit that freedom, I'm keeping my eye on you though!) and some X-grip adapters that make those mags flush with the compact frame.  The result is a very comfortable range shooter, the magazine combination does not detract from the ergonomics but adds to them, giving the grip a Walther-esque curve that just FITS my hands much to my surprise.  The Storm Lake barrel is supposedly "Match" grade, and with my shooting I can only determine that it hits where I point it.

What I don't like about the M&P357c is its "ninja" trigger reset, which is barely noticeable at all. Someone who has never had the blessing/curse of developing muscle memory and shooting habits with a Glock or other polymer strikerfire pistol may not care about it, but it drives me nuts. I'm used to that audible and tangible reset, and if it doesn't go off I'm used to treating it as a malfunction.  It is there just ever so slightly, so I will have to adjust sensitivity.  Also, I despise the safety systems.  M&P's seem to come in different safety varieties, the least of which I hate is the thumb safety surprisingly, and I've only seen it on a 9mm compact model once (Most including mine do not have this).  All factory models sport a hinged trigger safety, which is disruptive to good trigger pulls IMHO, and can easily be defeated by a stick of lip balm, jacket drawstring, a pen, basically anything thats rigid enough and the right motion and the trigger will depress fully, which probably explains the 6.5 lb trigger weight.  There are modifications for both of those issues out there with basic disassembly abilities and access to youtube.  The other safety I really don't care for is the magazine safety, which deploys when a magazine is released from the gun.  Sure it can prevent ND's from that infamous "last round in the chamber" from occurring when you pull the mag out, but there's really no substitute for competence of the firearm operator. If for whatever reason you are in a struggle and the magazine is ejected from your M&P you had better switch to melee mode, because you are now holding an expensive bludgeoning device. Of course not many crooks will know about that achilles heel of safeties, so practice that poker face!

Our Rating:

+ Better ergonomics than Glock (Gen 3) in my collection - easy to customize to personal hand size - grip has good beavertail/concave area for web of hand + Trigger is relatively smooth (mine was  used/broken in) and doesn't feel heavy as 6.5 lbs sounds. + Scalloped rear slide serrations work well. + Sights are bright and white, rear is by Novak + Easy to convert to 40sw or 9mm with conversion barrels from S&W or Storm Lake.  Can accept a factory S&W 40c barrel, uses same mags.

- Trigger reset is almost negligible, not audible and barely tangible.  Takes getting used to or modification. - Taking down not as fluid as a glock or XD, requires a tool (integrated in grip) to pry a lever from inside the slide, makes cleaning or caliber swapping a slow process. - I personally think the trigger safeties on M&P's are pointless. A wide margin of objects besides a finger could inside the trigger guard and deactivate safety with the right downward motion and cause accidental discharge. - Not a big fan of the magazine safety either (will not fire when mag is ejected)

Ares Armor Gavel Ambidextrous Safety Selector

Gavel-Saftey-Selector-AresArmor-2

IMG_4456When I got the Ares Armor Gavel out of the package I realized that there were two different sized safety selectors. I also noticed the sprocket design that allows the user to mount it at an angle that is easy and comfortable for them. As long as you can take something apart and put it back together you should have no problem installing this on your own rifle. It even comes with the tool to screw it together (as it should). Once you have the shaft installed then it’s time to figure out how you want it set up. The safety selectors can be mounted in 30 degree increments and they’re swappable.

IMG_4457I liked having it mounted so that when it was disengaged, the selector was vertical. I can manipulate the small one with my dominant hand so I like to have the larger one mounted on my offside. I found it to be easier to use with my offhand. It’s also designed to be a short throw safety selector. You only have to actuate it 55 degrees instead of the regular 90. The only thing that I didn’t like was that the safety selectors were made of polymer. I’m sure that they’re strong and will last for a long time, it just takes some time to get used to. I have recommended it to everyone I know with an AR and some friends without one.

Kimber Eclipse Target ll

Kimber Eclipse image

I have had this gun for about 10 years now and its still my gun safe queen!  Recently I have resolved to bring her back out and start using it more often.  After all isn't that why we buy guns...so we can enjoy them right?  As soon as I got this Kimber in hand, I decided to put on an extended magwell and Kimber tactical grips.  But that's it! Those were the only mods that I deemed necessary for this beautiful piece of firearm bliss.

OK ... time to get into the meat of the matter.  I have fired approximately 1,500 rounds through this Eclipse.  To be completely honest with you guys, when I first took it to the range, I had some feeding issues with the first 300 rounds.  However after getting it tall broken in, the gun ran flawlessly for the last 10 years.  If you have never held a Kimber, they are extremely tight tolerances with no loose rattling like most other 1911”s.  Everything is worked by hand to ensure maximum accuracy and it is very accurate! My ol’ man can punch an 1”-1 ½” group with this firearm. The Kimber Eclipse has a crisp 4-5lb aluminum match trigger and when you pull the slide to the rear, its very smooth.  In fact, everything about this gun is crisp and smooth. I do have one major qualm with the Kimber …. the black oxide finish seems to wear off too easy, especially on parts like the safety that get a lot of skin contact.  Other than that, the pistol has a solid steel slide and frame that is very well balanced.  The target 2 model comes with a 5” match steel barrel and meprolight adjustable night sights.  Last but not least, the Kimber Eclipse has 30 LPI checkering on the front grip (I love this feature) and come with two 8 round mags.

Remington 1100 20ga. Shotgun

remington1100

Every hunter has one firearm with the most sentimental value. It's probably one of the first they've ever had, and is reliable without question.  For me, this would be my Remington Model 1100 in 20 gauge.  Given to me many years ago by a close family friend and role model in all things outdoorsman, this is the shotgun with which I've learned to hunt upland game birds and shoot skeet.  Over a whole decade later it's still my favorite shotgun for the range or in the field.

I'm not an extraordinary shot or anything, but I can claim with this firearm I can get double and even triple consecutive hits on clay pigeons and quail. The lightweight and soft recoil of 20 gauge plus the gas operated recoil system make this shotgun a dream.

The blued image has held up over the past 10+ years flawlessly, and the engraving on the receiver and bolt add to the classy aesthetic of the shotgun.  This will be one of the finest heirlooms I pass on to my future kin.

What others are saying? "Another high point of the 1100 gas operation is reduced recoil. This gun will be much more enjoyable to shoot than your mule-kicking Mossberg. Especially since it is a lighter gauge. But, don't let that fool you. The 20 gauge is plenty of gun for anything from geese to doves and deer to pigs. In fact, I like the way it puts the smackdown on a a gobbler with heavier loads or gracefully knocks a quail down with field loads. Great all-round gauge. " - fieldandstream.com review

Taurus PT 1911

Sam PT 1911

This firearm is slightly torn, torn between timeless design, and modern affordable production. On the one hand, you have a pure American classic firearm in the 1911 designed by none other than John Moses Browning and put into service in 1911. On the other Sam PT 1911 pic 2hand you have Taurus, a company that has been successful by offering cheaper alternatives to more expensive designs offered by other companies. Not to say they don’t make quality firearms, but suffice to say they are not always the most independent when it comes to design. As far as inspiration goes, they lead the way with the PT 1911 pistol. Taurus managed to cram a lot of features into a well-fitted and finished firearm that would normally go for twice as much money. A majority of people agrees that the value in this gun is tremendous, however there are some naysayers. You can find video reviews and blooper vids on youtube showing misfeeds and stove pipes. That’s all fine and dandy, but even the highest end 1911’s can sometimes have growing pains.

I took the plunge on this gun and have not regretted it one bit. It has been just as, if not more reliable than guns twice its price point. Granted if you’re a collector, none of this is all too impressive. The beautiful scalloped cocking serrations of an S&W E-Series, or the almost hand shredding checkering of a Springfield Armory TRP may draw you in more. However, for the budget conscious, or the person who simply wants a 1911 to fill that void, this is the gun for them. It sure was for me.

Mossberg 930 SPX

mossberg930

930

Tactical Shotguns of yester year.  It's good to see the ol' 12 gauge staying strong, and as the popularity with module, fancy rifles has grown, the shotgun world has been becoming a little... blacker.  Rails, High Capacity clip-o-zines, flesh-eating muzzle devices... no this isn't one of those shotguns.  The Mossberg 930 is pretty conventional by todays high-speed-low-drag, 'gotta have 1913 rail all over the place' standards.  And thank the Lord for that, because this gun is really meant to be put to work.  Law Enforcement, Military, and recreational competition is where the 930 shines due to its durability and reliability.

Jerry-Miculek1It's actually a 3-Gunner fan favorite, with more than a few famous shooters (ahem - Jerry Miculek, Lena Miculek, Ryan Flannigan) having signature models.  Seriously, check out Jerry's 930 with the huge magazine tube and gnarly muzzle compensator, what a beast!  Buying a 3-Gun platform in 930 isn't painless though, as availability is real tough, but for the price it still comes way lower than a Benelli.  Luckily it's Mossberg, and that means aftermarket availability is out there.  Not as much as the 500 but its still out there.  Finding a 22"-24" is the hardest part, since these come with an 18" and everyone's looking for a longer barrel so they can get a longer mag tube as well.  I'm still searching.  But in-between matches, its a great range beast, and will definitely fit a home defense role.

The only real issue that floats around out in the community is the anemic ejection of low-brass and inexpensive shells right out of the box.  Some claim they never had the issue, other's swear by it.  I did have a few shells get caught in the action at first.  But I managed to find some winchester bulk that was a bit bolder at 1200fps, and still mixed in some 3" old game loads for about 2-300 rounds.  It shoots the cheap stuff just fine now.

I was in my local gun shop when I saw this Beretta U22 Neos hanging on the wall. I found it interesting as a possible purchase for my son who was really wanting a pistol. I figured he would think it was cool looking. I U22 Neos Reardecided to buy it for his birthday. The model I chose was the 4.5 inch, it also comes in 6 inch. It has a rail permanently attached to the barrel that has an adjustable rear sight, windage and elevation, and a fixed blade in front. The rail on it is for Weaver style mounts. The controls work well and are mostly convenient. It has an ambidextrous safety which is under my thumb and is kind of awkward to take on/off. There is also a carbine kit for it, you unscrew the barrel and remove the hand grip. Replacing both with a 16” barrel and a stocked grip assembly. The main issue with this kit is poor availability and it is priced the same as the original pistol.

Sig Sauer P227 Nitron .45 ACP

Sig P227

Released at Shot Show 2013, the P227 in .45 ACP is Sig Sauer’s latest edition to their Classic Series of alloy frame pistols. With a reduced circumference one-piece modular grip, the P227 packs a double-stacked magazine of 10+1 rounds of .45ACP (14 round extended magazine offered soon) into a manageable, very ergonomic package. It’s currently available in two full-size models with 4.4 inch barrels: The P227 Nitron, and the P227 SAS Gen 2.  A “Carry” model, which has a slightly shorter 3.9 inch barrel is also available.

I ordered my P227 Nitron with SigLight night sights from the Sig Sauer Pro Shop in Epping, NH in June, and it arrived at my local FFL in late November. The pistol ships with two 10 round magazines, E2 grip removal tool, hard case, owner’s manual, and cable lock. Because I have yet to get my hands on the SAS or Carry version of the P227, this review will be based on my experience with the P227 Nitron.

P220 left P226 Middle P227 Right

The P227 shares the same frame dimensions with the P220 and P226 with an overall length of 7.70 inches, height of 5.5 inches and width of 1.5 inches.  This allows it to fit in holsters designed for the P226R and P220R. I tested the P227 in several duty holsters designed for the P226, including the Safariland ALS holster with attached Streamlight TLR-1s without any issue. The P227 also fit into several polymer paddle style holsters designed for the 226R and the 220R, including 5.11 Thumb Drive, Black Hawk CQC and Safariland ALS. I have yet to find a holster that would fit my P226 that would not accept the P227. Magazine pouches are a different story, of course, but I’d rather buy new mag pouches than holsters any day.

The P227 comes standard with Sig’s E2 (Enhanced Ergonomics) single-piece “screwless” grips with a skate-tape like texture. A noticeable addition to the P227 is the single finger groove milled into the front strap of the grip directly below the trigger guard. This adds to the slim feel of the grip and seems to improve the overall handling of the pistol, especially when drawing from a holster. Fine checkering on the remainder of the front strap improves traction with wet or oily hands. The bottom of the grip is slightly extended and beveled to form a magazine well funnel to assist with reloads. The P227 is equipped with a standard M1913 Picatinny Rail for your accessorizing needs.

P227 Left P226 Right

There is not a substantial difference between the grip size of the P226 and the P227. If you were to simply glance at the E2 grips of the two pistols, it would be tough to tell the difference. In hand, the P227 feels slightly larger, but not uncomfortably so.

The Nitron model is equipped with Sig’s standard Double Action/Single Action (DA/SA). The SAS Gen 2 model sports the DA/SA with a short-reset trigger (SRT), which reduces trigger reset travel by about 50%. An SRT conversion kit is available to install on Nitron models.

Out of the box, I found the 227’s trigger not as smooth as I had expected. Granted, the other Sigs I own have 3000+ rounds, and countless dry fire trigger presses in their history, and I would expect the P227’s trigger to smooth out comparatively after a break-in period.  After about 100 Double-Action dry-fire presses of the trigger, it had smoothed out a bit. Factory rated double action trigger pull is 10 lbs., with 4.4 lbs in single-action.

The P227’s slide is identical to that of the P220. In fact, you can put a P220 slide on the P227 frame. This is particularly good news for those who own P220 long slide models, or who have P220’s with sight/barrel configurations not yet offered for the P227.

The magazines shipped with the P227 are 10 round capacity, and are basically a P250 magazine with a different floor plate. The P227 magazine floor plate insert (the part inside the magazine that attaches to the bottom of the spring, and rests against the floor plate) is slightly extended, and allows only 10 rounds to be inserted into the magazine. Replacing the P227 floor plate insert with a P229 floor plate insert will allow 11 rounds to be loaded into the magazine. I did not experience any malfunctions during testing with this configuration, however I would not recommend it for self-defense or duty carry simply because it is not a factory-approved modification. Sig will be releasing an extended 14-round magazine for the P227 in the near future.

I put about 300 rounds of various factory loaded .45 ACP (FMJ, Frangible, Jacketed Hollow-point, Bonded Hollow-point) through the P227 without any malfunctions. The pistol is nicely balanced and the recoil of the .45 ACP is easily manageable. It had been a while since I fired a Sig with the standard length trigger reset, and it’s tough to go back after firing a Sig with the SRT. After my first day at the range with the P227, I placed an order for the SRT conversion kit.

I don’t have a mechanical rest for accuracy testing, but reports of 1-3 inch groups at 25 yards with various grades of ammunition are out there on the web. Bottom line: The pistol is capable of far better accuracy than the average shooter’s skill level, and is most certainly adequate for self-defense or duty carry.

Overall, if you’re looking for an ergonomic, high capacity .45 ACP, take a look at the P227. It’s sure to be a hit with Sig Sauer fans and .45 ACP shooters alike. With an MSRP of around a grand, it’s not the most affordable double stack .45 out there, but with Sig Sauer, you generally get what you pay for.

CZ-82 Pistol Review

CZ - 82

The CZ-82 is a compact pistol chambered in 9mm Makarov, or 9x18mm. It was designed for the Czechoslovakian military when the Soviet Union standardized to the 9x18mm round. The pistol is a double action/single action design, meaning that the first shot is a heavy double action and each subsequent shot is a short single action pull. It holds a 12 round magazine and has an ambidextrous magazine release and safety. The slide release is on the left side of the frame. I prefer my carry pistols not have a safety, so I carry it with a round in the chamber and the hammer down. In this condition, the safety cannot be activated, so I don’t worry about the safety being inadvertently activated. There is an internal hammer block that does not allow the hammer to strike the firing pin, unless the trigger is pulled. The sights on the pistol were no longer filled with the original red paint, but I was able to swap them to tritium sights designed for the CZ-75.  My pistol was made in 1987 and showed very apparent wear from carry.  It

CZ-82 Bottle Openerwas very well broken in and the trigger was smooth as silk. The barrel has polygonal rifling, which aids in accuracy. One thing to note on the rifling is that it will look smooth, but if you look closely, you will see there is rifling. This is the way they are made, so don’t worry. I am able to shoot very nice groups with this pistol. My only complaint of this pistol would be that when using a "thumbs forward" grip, there isn't really much for my left thumb to rest on, so it tends to rub the slide. This causes enough drag that the pistol will sometimes not fully cycle, and leave a spent case in the chamber. With a conscious effort to correct my grip, I have never had a malfunction. The way I remedy this is to curl my thumbs together. CZ also offers their Model 83, which is a newly made version available in .380 ACP and .32 ACP. On a final note, if you are ever in dire need, you can use the pistol as a bottle opener by locking the slide back and hooking the dust cover under the cap!

Crosman Game Face GF1911G Airsoft Pistol

GF1911G

Before I get started I have to mention that the orange tip on this pistol was shot out of the barrel.  It does come with the orange tip from the factory.  I think it may have gotten bumped and knocked out of alignment though.  All testing was done without the orange tip in place.

My first impression of this pistol really created a deeper desire to keep shooting it! The thing that really stands out is that the weight is so comparable to a real 1911, coming in at 33.6 oz.  The grip safety depresses but is non-functional.  The hammer falls but GF1911G grip safetydoes not stay in battery.  There is a thumb safety that is strictly for aesthetics and does not move at all.  I mention this because it seems weird that these features are non-functional but for the purpose of an airsoft pistol I think it would really drive the price up if all of these components were functional.  They feel real. And for training purposes this would come in very handy, at least for pulling the trigger.  Having a non-functional thumb safety that doesn't move would, however, not be the best option for training to draw and fire your 1911 if you carry one on a GS1911G safetyregular basis. So there is that to think about.  The actual safety on the pistol is on the right side above the trigger and is easily toggled forward and backward with your index finger.

As far as the slide release goes, it functions like normal. With this pistol the slide release engages when the magazine is in place and you pull the slide back.  It has fixed black sights but it's rare that the pistol shoots a BB that doesn't curve so I can't tell if the sights are good or not.  Whether it was a full CO2 cartridge or a half empty one, it didn't seem to affect the consistency of the shots.  One BB would curve to the left then the next would curve to the right.  I know this is typical but they seemed like they were going off target a little more than they should have been.

GF1911G slide back

*I'll be adding a picture of my groups and distances shortly.*

GF1911G magazineThe magazine is kind of heavy since it's metal but does allow for a fast release when the magazine release isGF1911G components pushed.  The magazine is a slim, and holds 15 rounds.  It fits compactly into the grip along with the CO2 cartridge and the hex head set screw tool for tightening and loosening the CO2 cartridge. To remove/replace the CO2 cartridge you release the magazine, pop the grip plate off, let the hex head fall out (which is held in place tandemly with the grip plate and magazine when in place), and then simply loosen or tighten the set screw. Simple.  It's nice that it all fits right into the grip.

One of the other things I really like about it is that the slide blows back on every shot, simulating a slight degree of recoil.  Very slight.  However, one thing I don't like is how much the slide rattles around.  The slide itself is fairly light and the tolerances are less than satisfactory.  If you give the pistol a shake, it's actually quite loud.  The good thing is that this does not affect accuracy and does not indicate one way or the other how well built the pistol is.  The entire pistol, with exception to the slide tolerances, is durable and sturdy.

I thoroughly enjoyed shooting the GF1911G. I would recommend this to ANYONE looking for an affordable and realistic way to have fun shooting, save some money on ammo, and train.

Sig Sauer – SP2022

 Sig 2022

Last year about this time I found myself in the market for a new pistol. I knew I wanted a polymer framed handgun that was accurate and reliable, to use more as a range toy but could also be a carry gun if it had to.  I really found myself drawn to the Springfield Armory XDM and had decided to place an order.  That is until one day I was in my local gun shop and the sales guy behind the counter handed

Sig 2022 - 4me a Sig Sauer SP 2022.  Instantly there was just something about that gun!  It was so comfortable.  It was like the grip just melted into my hand.  Later that month, Black Friday rolled around. The Sig SP 2022 was marked down a hundred bucks and I took one home. I’ve been carrying it for about a year now and I’m just as happy with my purchase now as I was then.  People may ask, “Tiny, what’s so great about a fifteen year old design?”  Well I’m so glad you asked!

In 1998, Sig Sauer released their first polymer frame pistol in 40 S&W and 357 Sig.  Then a year later, they released it in 9mm.  For the time, the Sig Pro series handgun was a pretty nifty design with interchangeable grips and an accessory rail.  However, the polymer framed hand guns had not yet been embraced by the market.  The Sig Pro soon became known as the poor man’s P226.  However a few years later, polymer became the industry standard.  In 2002, Sig redesigned the Sig Pro for French law enforcement Sig 2022 - 2and rereleased it as the Sig SP2022 with a service life in mind of twenty years (hence the designation 2022).  The pistol is very similar to the Sig P226.  It uses the classic DA/SA trigger that Sig is known for with no manual safety.  Instead, the gun features a decoking lever in its place and Sig’s four point safety system.  It has a 3.9 inch barrel with an overall length of 7.4 inches.  Its 5.7 inches tall, 1.3 inches wide and weighs 29 ounces unloaded.  Some say it’s a little chunky for IWB carry but if the French can do it, it can’t be that bad!  It shoots great!  The double action trigger pull is 10 pounds and even though that sounds heavy, it’s very smooth!  With a little practice, you won’t have any trouble holding your sights on target.  The single action trigger pull is 4.5 pounds which in my opinion is ideal.  The reset is a little long but it’s not really a problem unless you’re Jerry Miculek.  Still, high level competition shooters may opt for a shorter reset trigger on their match pistols.

Now you may be asking, “gee whiz, are there any reasons I shouldn’t get one?”  My answer is not many.  There’s not a ton of Sig 2022 - 3aftermarket accessories and most of them are from Sig Sauer themselves.  To they’re credit they haven’t abandoned it.  You can buy different size grips and switch between 40 S&W and 357 Sig with conversions available.  Unfortunately there are no conversions for 9mm and neither is there a 22 conversion for plinking on the cheap.  Also, while there are holsters out there to be had, you may not have your choice manufacturer.  Furthermore, while the sandpaper like grip is great for IDPA, I would recommend an undershirt if you’re carrying IWB because it will eat into your side like a bull shark!  That, or order the large grip from Sig.  It has rubber inserts that are real comfortable, but if anybody from Sig is reading this, we really need a medium or small size grip with the rubber inserts.  Magazines are relatively easy to find. The 40 S&W and 357 Sig have a capacity of 12 while the 9mm is 15.  Mec Gar also makes 17 round magazines for the 9mm.  There are rumors that Sig is coming out with a 20 round factory magazine for the 9mm chambering, but I wouldn’t hold my breath till I see one.

Still all things considered, this is a great pistol for the money!  Take down of the pistol is done with one pin that doubles as the slide release leaver.  That makes for easy cleaning and reassembly. Accurate and reliable, I’ve never had a single malfunction.  Supposedly, the French police tested the pistol with over 400,000 rounds without having a malfunction!  I doubt many shooters will fire that many rounds through a single handgun.  If you looking for Sig Sauer quality but don’t have a thousand dollars to spend to get it, look no further than the Sig SP 2022.  Give it a shot; you’ll be glad you did!

Sig Sauer M11-A1

M11 A1 vs P228 side by side

By Kirby Yau

I’ve had a love affair with Sig Sauer P228 since I first saw it in the Clint Eastwood Secret Service action thriller In the Line of Fire. The compact P226 has been used in Hollywood hits like, the X-Files, The Sentinel, NCIS, and NCIS – LA. It’s mostly portrayed as the quintessential good guy Fed gun that only fed my desire.P228 Hand grip

When Sig Sauer announced in 2012 it was producing a new set of P228s, naming it the M11 A-1 and intentionally hyping it’s military pedigree; it garnered interest from me and other Sig admirers old and new. When technical specifications of the M11 A-1 were made public, the numbers indicated that the 2012 reissue of the M11-A-1 were merely P229s with P228 pressed into the handgrips.

Despite sharing the M11, military designation, the M11 A-1 shares more with the P229 than the Military/LEO issued M11/P228. Instead of a stamped steel slide, the M11 A-1 shares the milled stainless steel slide of the P229. The M11A-1/P229 weighs in at 32 oz., a whole ounce more than the P228.

M11 A1 vs P228 heightBoth weapons are the same height but the M11 A-1 is slightly thicker being built off of the P229 frame. P228 magazines are interchangeable with M11-A1 despite the M11-A1 shipping with P229-1 Magazines. P229-1 magazines will not work in the P228.M11 A1 UID sticker

All the Sig controls are where you expect them to be. The M11-A1 has a UID sticker which is more of a marketing gimmick than utilitarian.

The Key difference on the right side of the firearm includes the long extractor on the M11 A-1. Although the long extractor garners lots of bad Internet press, I experienced zero issues after putting 300 rounds through the barrel with all rounds feeding and extract properly.

M11 A1 trigger and controls

The short reach trigger/thin trigger is a deviation from the P228’s standard trigger, which is a welcome addition to my Medium-large hands. It felt very comfortable with every trigger pull, but I do miss the trigger ridges from the P228.

M11 A1 Night Sights

SIGLITE® Night Sights are standard on the M11 A-1 (left) and a bright and sharp compared to the same SIGLITE® Night Sights on the older P228. Understandable since the tritium inserts which dim after time.

A unique feature of the M11-A1 is the laser etched SIG insignia on the top of the slide. Personally I don’t think it adds or detracts to the design.

I really wanted to dislike the M11-A1 and treat it like the bastard child of the much beloved P228, but I really LOVE it.  I hate to say it but I feel it balances better than the P228 in my hand. I shoot it more accurately than the P228. I’m afraid to say it, but the M11-A1 is better than my P228.

The M11-A1 is a great value that includes features such as a Short Reset Trigger, night sights, chrome lined barrel, phosphate coated internals, and three magazines for a price similar to others in the P229.

Sig Sauer is a quality firearms manufacturer.  The P229R is carried by thousands of law enforcement professionals throughout the country.  The compact size of this gun makes it great for conceal carry but in reality, it doesn't feel like a compact gun.  At 37 oz, it’s heavier than other compact models on the market, but the balance of the gun makes it feel like it weighs a lot less. Heckler & Koch USP .40 Compact

HK USP .40 Compact

By Steve Remy

The H&K USP .40 Compact is a highly reliable gun that I would have no problem entrusting my protection to.  I fired nearly 2,000 rounds down the barrel of this pistol with zero malfunctions of any sort.  The ammo ranged from brass to steel case, and ball to hollow point.  This particular model being reviewed is considered to be a “variant 1” meaning it has a de-cocking lever that doubles as a safety. This H&K can be carried in double action (DA) with the safety on/off, or be carried in single action (SA, cocked and locked) with the safety on/off.  The pistol is fired in either DA/SA mode or SA only.  These features alone allow a multitude of user carry configurations that will meet most people’s personal carry preference.

The HK grips well and feels extremely comfortable when firing.  For added comfort and as a personal preference, I chose to add a slip-on finger groove grip.  The ambidextrous magazine release is a bar across the front strap where the trigger guard and the front strap meet.  It is easy to access without rotating your hand to a mag release button as many left handed shooters must do with non-ambidextrous mag releases.

The gun is easy to disassemble by pushing out the slide release lever and moving the slide forward off of the frame.  The recoil spring is self contained meaning the spring is held in place on the spring guide by a small c-clip.  This only becomes a problem when the c-clip mysteriously disappears during a trip to the range and the spring flies off the guide rod when you begin your cleaning process.  As you can tell, this happened to me about 1,500 rounds through the gun.  Here is where it gets somewhat grim.  HK’s customer service was pretty dismal when I called them about the problem and asked for a replacement c-clip.  My first call was to HK’s main customer service line where I was connected with someone who determined this particular part was out of stock and was unsure of when it would be available.  Being out of stock is understandable in some situations, so I called my area HK law enforcement rep to see if he had any available for purchase.  I spoke with him and he indicated he had a few and could spare a couple to send me free of charge.  After taking my name and shipping address, I didn’t receive anything or hear from him for a couple of weeks.  All subsequent phone calls and messages went unreturned.  In my book this was unacceptable.  Luckily the gun still functions flawlessly without the c-clip, but reassembly after cleaning is now a frustrating and somewhat comical experience.  It takes three hands but unfortunately I only have two, so I am constantly annoyed by their lack of responsiveness.

The HK shoots as accurate as any other well-made compact pistol on the market, especially in the sub 10 yard fighting range where must gun fights happen.  The controls are smooth and easily activated but the trigger could use some work considering this gun will cost most people nearly $900-$1,000 after taxes and FFL fees.  The trigger was jumpy out of the box and never seemed to smooth out during the 2,000 rounds fired.  For the price of the gun I would expect the trigger to be butter smooth, especially knowing the quality engineering that went into producing this gun.

Overall the USP compact is very reliable and backed by a company known for producing high quality firearms.  However, with the price point being nearly $1,000, one must consider the ability to purchase at least two other handguns with similar reliability and functionality for the same amount of money.  There is somewhat of a novelty in owning an HK and many people have purchased one for themselves as a commemorative-type gift.  Being somewhat of a pragmatist if I had $1,000 devoted to purchase another handgun, I might opt in the future to purchase multiple handguns instead of one HK; afterall, isn’t two always better than one?

Glock 20 Gen 4 10mm Auto

Glock 20 Gen 4 10mm

By Reed Snyder

I have always been a Sig Sauer enthusiast. When my sights strayed from the line of pistols that were my first love, they never fell on polymer pistols. I have however always been curious about the 10mm cartridge. Along my travels, I then developed an appreciation for the .357 Sig cartridge, a distant cousin to the 10mm. When Glock began phasing in the 4th generation of pistols, I found myself drawn to the G20. My desire to acquire a polymer pistol I once scoffed at was again strengthened as I discovered the range of aftermarket barrels that could be installed in the G20. The available barrels allow for the chambering of the .40 S&W as well as the venerable .357 Sig. I was sold, I had to own one. I began my search and failed to find an internet source that priced the pistols anywhere near retail. I was shocked to not only find one in stock at my Local Gun Store, but I found one that was priced to sell at the MSRP. I took my pistol to the range and I was very impressed with how the G20 tamed the 10mm cartridge. Glock and its products have earned a reputation for reliability and simplicity, and justifiably so. The G20 Gen 4 does not disappoint in this regard. The G20 is only slightly larger than the G17 in most of its dimensions and is not all that different in its handling. I am growing fonder of the polymer pistols as I spend more time with the G20 and make no mistake about it, I love my G20. However, I am reminded that the money I saved by buying a polymer pistol may have been in part due to the simplistic standard sights and the rather rough factory trigger. The aftermarket parts arena makes provision for a number of upgrades that can easily take the edge off my dissatisfaction with those two items. After spending time on the pistol, I would heartily recommend the G20 to anyone interested in the 10mm cartridge or a Glock enthusiast looking to complete their collection.

Price point:

  • MSRP = Glock Site - MSRP is not readily available

Beretta PX4 Storm Compact

Beretta-PX4.jpg

Beretta is one of the oldest gun makers in the world and I think the experience shows in this pistol. I’ve never had a FTF, FTE, or any kind of complications. Other than the things I don’t like listed below, I can’t complain. The stipling issue was easily overcome by using automotive grip tape, similar to that on skateboards. It can be found at Walmart and many hardware stores, and tutorials on how to apply it can be found on youtube. The take down and cleaning of it are easy as well. Beretta says they’ve used their experience with the M9 in sandy environments to produce a better functioning firearm. Unlike other manufacturers who crank out a new model every year they took their time to produce this masterpiece. Although it has some shortcomings, no product is perfect. It is a very reliable and accurate firearm that is great for conceal or open carry. I think this is one quality gun that I won’t be switching away from for a long time.

Our Rating: +  The pistol runs consistently. I have shot several hundred rounds of suppressed and unsuppressed and have had total reliability. +  I love that the gun is hammer fired and not striker fired like most polymer handguns. +  Like most modern polymer handguns, it is very corrosion resistant. +  It comes with two 10 round magazines. +  The barrel is threaded which makes attaching a suppressor easy. +  The sights are high enough to clear most .22 Suppressors.

-  I don’t care for the ambidextrous safety/decocker. -  In order to use the threaded barrel, you need an attachment. The attachment is sold separately.
