Victory Operational Works Crusader Holster

  Victory Operational Works is a veteran owned company making a unique holster system. The Crusader is a 2 piece multi-use holster which is not your typical pancake style. Victory Operational Works also has one called the Crusader Max which has a built in mag carrier. I chose the standard Crusader in Kryptek Neptune, but Victory also sent me one of their Conspirator individual magazine carriers to try out. It is also in Kryptek Neptune. Both of which exude quality.

  The Crusader comes complete with everything you need. When I say everything, it really means everything. When you pull the Crusader out of its nicely sealed packaging, a bag of accessories comes out with it. In this little bag is all the extra hardware you need to change the Crusader from an inside the waistband (IWB) holster, to an outside the waistband (OWB) holster. This includes screws, rubber grommets, Torx style allen wrench, etc. The OWB mounting isn’t just some flimsy belt loops, Victory Operational Works gives you an official Blade-Tech Tek Lok to use for OWB carry. The Tek Lok is a proven secure mounting method that has built in belt width adjustments. For IWB use, the Crusader holster comes, out of the package, with an installed Discreet Carry Concepts 1.5” monoblock. The DCC clip also has a laser engraved “V” on it which is a really nice quality touch that I haven’t seen before. In my opinion, the DCC clips are the best IWB clips around. So check a box for Victory doing stuff correctly.

  With all those mounting options, Victory goes one step farther with the Crusader. The Crusader has a bunch of different mounting hole options. Essentially, all these holes give the user plenty of different options for carrying the holster by being able to mount the belt clip or Tek Lok. Most notably are the different holes for ride height and cant. With the IWB and DCC option, you have 2 different ride height adjustments, as well as a cant option. There are 2 different ride height adjustments in the OWB configuration. Besides the supplied mounting options, Victory puts in a bunch of different holes for OWB carry. This allows you to install your own type of OWB attachments. Most notably are the Safariland mounting hole pattern. I ended up mounting a QLS fork from Safariland so I can quickly just add or remove the Crusader from my battle belt. All of the mounting holes are riveted so they will last a lifetime. Another check for the quality box.

  When it comes to the Crusader itself, it is unique. I say this because the holster is constructed of 2 separate pieces. A front piece and a back piece. They are molded to each individual firearm, to make a complete holster, by custom made inhouse jigs. Then they are mounted together with 4 screws and rubber bushings. These 4 mounting points also make it possible for the end user to adjust the tension on the holster. You can make the gun fit super loose, or super tight. Adjust the 2 down by the trigger guard for that “snap in” feel, but keep the other 2 screws looser, and the pistol seems to glide out of the holster with ease. Or tighten them all up equally for more of that normal holster feel. The way Victory makes these 2 sides allows for tall sight and slide ride optics. The Crusader is an open bottom style holster. The open bottom allows lint and stuff to not build up in the holster. It also allows for the use of threaded barrels and compensators to stick out the end of the holster, if you are using such products. One thing I noticed about the Crusader, is that it angles the butt end of the pistol in toward your body. I really liked this as it helps to hide the grip a little better.

  Victory Operational Works also sent their Conspirator magazine pouch. The Conspirator is a molded, universal, single mag carrier for double stack magazines . It also comes with all the hardware that the Crusader comes with, plus some options for a different style of DCC clip. The mag holder is the same excellent quality of the Crusader. It also has multiple holes for mounting it however one would like, angled either direction, straight, lower, higher, etc. One of the features, of the Conspirator, is the insert piece that lets you adjust the magazine's retention. Not by just clamping the screws tighter, but an adjustable drag plate inside the magazine pouch. I really like the Conspirator mag pouch. It may seem expensive at $49.99, but when you figure in all the mounting hardware, it’s a decent value.

  Every convertible holster has some trade offs. For me, the Crusader makes an excellent OWB holster. I like everything about it in that configuration. Where I think the trade off is, is in the IWB configuration. Because of the 2 piece design, there is a little more material to try and hide. This caused the holster and pistol to print more for me at the 2:30-3 o’clock position. Appendix carry was a little better, but not much. I really appreciated the designed in angles, or curves, that Victory puts into the holster. These angles make it a very comfortable holster to wear for IWB carry. Even if it does print more for me. Those angles also make it more comfortable for OWB carry. The Crusader also is made so that the pistol's magazine release button is not covered by the holster. This allows you to change a magazine without unholstering the pistol. But for me, it means that the holster itself won’t drop the magazine. Which has happened to me before. So nice job Victory.

  If you are looking for that one do-all holster, the Crusader from Victory Operational Works just might be it. The quality and craftsmanship are top notch, even down to using torx head screws that are used throughout the holster. It has great adjustability and comes with everything you need to convert it between IWB and OWB carry. Made in the USA with a lifetime warranty, you should go take a look at Victory Operational Works and the Crusader holster.

Bravo Concealment Holster (IWB and OWB)

  Bravo Concealment bills their holsters as “the best in everyday concealed carry.”  When they offered to send me a holster to review my expectations were high, however, when I received the IWB holster, at first, I was ambivalent.  

  The holster is constructed from two pieces of Kydex which are joined together by four screws that also hold the belt clips in place.  The following items were in the bag:  

• IWB Kydex Holster (for Glock 17)

• Single magazine holder

• Extra fasteners

• Two additional belt clips

  The pistol is aligned vertically with the holster shell (i.e. no built in cant) but the belt loops are adjustable for ride height and cant angle.  The belt loops are at an offset angle to allow for better concealment (they call it Torsion Technology). The pistol fit securely in the holster with no slack or rattling.  A loaded magazine was inserted in the pistol and holstered. I tried to shake the pistol loose but was not successful.

  The holster was comfortable to wear and the pistol could be inserted and removed with ease.  I am overweight and most IWB holsters are uncomfortable, particularly when seated. With this holster I experienced a little discomfort, but not nearly as bad as others.  

  I used this holster for a few months, took it to several training classes and it worked fine.  Drawing was simple and fluid and I could re-holster without sweeping myself (important for use on ranges).  

  In addition an OWB holster was ordered for review (paid for by reviewer).  This holster is larger than the IWB model and pistol is slightly canted forward in the shell.  Similar to the IWB the holster can be adjusted for ride height and cant, although not as much as the IWB holster.

  This holster was used in a training course without prior testing (a mistake on my part).  The holster held the pistol a little too tight, which resulted in the pistol pulling up the holster when drawing.  This caused me to use my left hand to hold the belt down to aid in drawing. The instructor informed me that I was dangerously close to sweeping my hand, which would result in disqualification, so i changed the holster to the IWB model.  

  When I returned home customer service was contacted.  They asked me a few questions to verify I was using the proper firearm, belt etc.  Once this was established they promptly provided a prepaid shipping label to send the holster back to be repaired.  Once the issue was corrected the holster was returned, at no cost, and the draw was much smoother. This is great customer service.

RPS Tactical Adaptive Holster Review

Everyone has been there; the drawer or tupperware container full of holsters. You’ve tried numerous ones, and there is always some sort of issue with them. The holster is too bulky; the holster doesn’t have any flex to work with your body shape; it only allows for one method of carry or storage. RPS Tactical has addressed these issues. Located in Fairfield, Maine, RPS Tactical was started by a local LEO and his brother, with a focus on making holsters, belts & nylon gear along with many other custom items. I spent some time with Rob and his brother Nick and discussed the way they make their holsters, as well as the way they hand stitch their belts. Their attention to detail and commitment to quality is very apparent in the way they make their items and the final product they put out. They are also willing to work with the customer. When I wanted to get a holster made by them, they didn’t have the mold for my Steyr C9A1 (most people don’t) and they were willing to let me bring my firearm over for them to mold the holster. I know another individual who had a specific need and they worked with him to get the holster and belt exactly as he wanted it. With the owner of RPS Tactical being a law enforcement officer, they have a really good understanding of what goes into comfortable everyday carry of firearms and other gear.

I did a podcast with the guys at RPS and they made me the Adaptive Holster for my Steyr for me to evaluate. I spent almost 8 months carrying my Steyr with the Adaptive holster in the IWB and then the OWB configurations. I had long road trips in the car, range trips, working outside, going on walks with my wife and son & pretty much every single other everyday thing you do. The Adaptive holster is a kydex shell with a sturdy leather  backing. On the body side of the backing material is the soft side of industrial strength velcro. This allows for various mounting options if you purchase the corresponding velcro patches that can be affixed to any surface. For my body type, I found the OWB configuration worked better for me. I carried setup as IWB from June to about November, when I switched to the OWB configuration as the weather got colder and I could start wearing jackets. The IWB worked good, but with my body type I’ve found that IWB can be uncomfortable over extended periods of time. I am confident other people that don’t have issues with IWB carry will find the RPS Tactical Adaptive holster very comfortable.

During my time wearing the holster (and I am still wearing it to this day) i noticed no abnormal wear or any hardware backing out or failing on it. Everything was very sturdy, reholstering was very easily accomplished, and the trigger guard was suitably covered. The kydex is molded to your specific firearm, and the retention was fantastic.  As with most high quality holsters, the leather backing was cut to allow for a full grip on the firearm prior to drawing.

One thing I will also note is the soft side velcro backing. While it is there for the mounting options as we discussed before, it also makes for very comfortable carry if the holster is directly against your skin. I, like many people, do not enjoy having a tucked in shirt. I have used other holsters that have the large leather backing and oftentimes found that when they were against bare skin that there was a lot of perspiration and discomfort especially in the hot summer months. It seems like the soft velcro backing on the body side of the holster allows some air to get in between the backing and your skin, preventing any perspiration or discomfort from occurring. For those of you who like to wear a tucked in shirt, the IWB configuration is tuckable as well. There are other carry options for the adaptive holster as well, including a paddle mount or  purchasing the RPS Tactical Shoulder harness and using your existing holster as a shoulder holster.

If you are looking for a very high quality holster (or any other pieces of high quality gear) from a fantastic small business, look no further than RPS Tactical. Their commitment to their products long after it has left their shop is telling. I have had multiple people come back to me after I have steered them toward RPS Tactical for their holster needs and tell me that they were so happy to work with RPS. Rob and Nick were very attentive to their needs and oftentimes they ended up getting fitted out with belts and other items above and beyond what their original request was. That speaks volumes as to the character and dedication that the guys at RPS have to customer satisfaction. I was very happy to evaluate their holster, and would highly recommend their products to my friends and family, for both duty & EDC use.

L.A.G. Tactical "The Defender" IWB/OWB holster

  A while back I ran into L.A.G. Tactical. I had heard of them before, but was able to talk with them at the Axelson Tactical grand opening event. I really liked what I was seeing. Later I contacted them and they agreed to send me a holster for review. All of their holsters and accessories are made from Kydex here in the U.S.A.

  Now, as most holster manufacturers do, they make a bunch of different styles and colors. I chose the Defender model in O.D. Green. The Defender is L.A.G.'s combination Inside the waistband (IWB) / Outside the waistband model (OWB). The way they do this is really quit simple, basically they send IWB and OWB belt clips with the holster. Being a style of pancake holster, it uses rivet holes on each end to attach either belt loops or hooks. All the necessary hardware is supplied. Loctite is recommended when attaching the screws, but some of them come with thread locker already on them.

  What sets L.A.G. apart from other holster manufactures is their actual attention to detail. When you go to order one of these holsters, they have drop down menus that ask you just about everything to make the holster fit correctly. Of course one of them is what gun model, of which they have plenty. But some of the other menus are what surprised me. First of which is where the holster will be carried, 2-3 or 3:30-5 o'clock. Then they have a menu for what side of the firearm is the magazine release on. The angle you would like the firearm to sit, 90°, 10°, or 20° cant. Next comes if you are primarily using it IWB or OWB. Now for what I thought was really great, they ask your waist size so they can get the curvature closer to what you need. Along with this, they ask is if you are Male or Female. Then they have a box for special requests. You also can choose separate front and back kydex colors. And last, the size and type of belt loops.

 One can also select the thickness of kydex for the holster. They have standard at 0.060" and heavy duty at 0.080". I chose the standard. But if I had to do it again I would have chose the heavy duty. I like the feel of the thicker kydex and the standard kydex seems to flex a bit. But if it is used primarily as an IWB holster, this flex should make it more comfortable. And since I wore it as both, It did work well as an IWB holster. But I prefer it as an OWB rig.

  The quality of this holster is fantastic. The guns fit inside the holster is great. Draws from both IWB and OWB are nice and smooth. Reholstering is easy thanks to a slightly flared top. The Defender has an adjustable screw tension. So if you want more or less resistance, it is possible. The kydex if formed nicely. Since mine is for a 1911, they have a nicely molded cover over the safety and mag release. I really liked the covered safety as it makes it way harder for the safety to accidentally come off, it also doesn't jab me in the side. The front and rear pieces are also nicely trimmed and smoothed together.

  I carried the holster IWB off and on for about 3 months. It works nicely, and actually made carrying a full size heavy pistol not so bad. It did take about a week for me to get use to wearing it IWB. Having the ability to adjust the ride height helps with the comfort. When I switched it to OWB, and used it at a few pistol matches, it worked very well. Do I have any problems with this holster? Not really, but it does make a better OWB than IWB. But you can't have your cake and eat it too.

  L.A.G. Tactical has also gotten some new publicity in partnering with Tactical Insider and Craig Sawyer on a special Defender series holster. If you are in the market for a good quality kydex holster, do not overlook L.A.G. Tactical. I personally would buy a holster from them or send someone their way. Plus as a bonus they can be purchased from Cabela's, but without all the options available at L.A.G. Tactical's website.

I use this LAG Tactical holster set up for IWB with my S&W Shield. Very well made product. all edges are smooth. Molded for perfect fit with my pistol. Very comfortable, even when against my bare skin this summer. Highly recommended!

Pros: Holster completely covers muzzle and front sight -- a big plus in my opinion. Top of outside edge is flared just a bit and that makes "finding" the top of the holster and getting the pistol back in during re-holstering a breeze. Kydex is stiff enough so, when worn, holster holds it shape when pistol is removed -- making re-holstering easy.

Great holster,very comfortable, tight at first but now it is perfect and still retains my pistol very well, has served me well so far, if you are in and out of vehicles all day i would recommend getting thicker kydex as mine is starting to crack, around the trigger guard but that is to be expected as my pistol grip catches on the vehicle during enbus/debus, but i think the next thickness would mitigate that.

Black Iron "ALLY" IWB Holster

  Any one who has considered the idea of carrying a firearm for protection, has had to look into holsters. Almost always, this ends up with a drawer full of unused holsters. The people over at Black Iron Holsters have made the job of choosing a holster a little bit easier with their ALLY series of inside the waistband (IWB) holster.

  The Ally IWB holster is one of the most comfortable holsters I have worn. I am not sure exactly how to describe the ALLY, but think hybrid holster on steroids. The first thing you notice on the holster, is the padding on the back, or the side that rides against your body. This padding is an UnderArmor moisture wicking fabric sewn over perforated padding and then mounted on the flexible kydex core. The padded fabric is said to pull sweat away from the body and make for a cooler drier holster. I did notice that I didn't sweat as much on the holster backing when it was hot outside. But the holster did seem to feel warmer than some other types. The ALLY also doesn't seem to feel cold either, like some all kydex holsters do.

  When they construct the holster, they use the above mentioned padding, but with some extras. They call it C-Pak. C-Pak adds in a flexible kydex core, 500 denier Cordura fabric, and the moisture wicking and padding mentioned above. All of this helps add to the comfort and usefulness of the holster. The whole holster, except the backing, has been wrapped in the Cordura nylon. This cordura wrapping actually reduces the effects of holster wear on the firearm by giving the firearm something besides the kydex to rub on. They also sew on a border around the whole holster. This border helps smooth the outer edges so that nothing can catch on the them.

  When I mentioned hybrid style on steroids, here is what I mean. The holster is constructed with a large backing plate and then the outer holster is attached to it. But all of this is wrapped as mentioned above. They also put in a tension adjustment screw so that you can adjust it to your preference. The backing on my supplied holster has 3 holes for each clip, it has a front and rear clip. These holes make it possible to adjust for ride height and cant. Also the supplied nylon clips have 2 mounting screw options for even more adjustment. Even with the clips mounted in the same holes on the backing plate, the cant of the firearm is pretty noticeable. I did have a problem with the screws, that the clips are mounted to, coming loose. I put thread locker on them, but got some on the nylon clips. DON'T get threadlocker on the clips, it might make them crack and break like in my case. I emailed Black Iron and told them what I did, within a few days they had sent me new clips. I was just going to use some others I had around here since it was my fault they broke. So a big +1 for customer service.

  Aside from this being a very comfortable holster, it is also very functional. This holster has a little bit of break in time associated with it, like 2-3 days. After that, I didn't really even notice it. One of the great features of the ALLY is that the holster mouth doesn't collapse when the pistol is removed. Thus making reholstering safer and easier. Holstering the pistol was a little strange at first, I kept wanting to here the audible click like most hybrid or kydex holsters. But it felt more like an all leather holster. Don't be worried about this holster printing either. It has a very smooth profile. I did notice that it is slightly thicker than some holster due to its padding and cordura, but the smooth profile made up for this. It is hard to notice this holster being worn. I usually only hide it under a T-shirt and that works well.

  Now, the ALLY comes in the four different fabric colors listed below. But don't fret, they seem to make this holster for just about every popular, and even other not so popular handguns. Also with options for various weapon lights. If they don't list your handgun, their website says to contact them, which makes me think they will do their best to help you out. So if your in the market for a nice IWB holster, give Black Iron Holsters a look.

I received my holster 2 weeks ago and this is by far hands down the greatest holster i have ever used. It fits like a glove both on myself and for my glock. It is everything described and more, i am a delivery driver and spend the majority of the time on the road getting in and out of my truck. I can honestly say by the end of the day it was so comfortable i completely forgot i was wearing it by the end of my shift. I will be swapping out my Alien Gear holsters for my other two guns and will be ordering everything from you guys from now own. Its well worth the few extra bucks for something that is of this quality.

Alex & Ryan Design Kydex Light Bearing Holster

I first heard of Alex and Ryan Design from my friend who bought a cuff holster from them. I looked into them a little bit and sent a few emails back and forth. After getting their advice(they answer their own email) I ordered the holster featured here and a double mag holster for IWB. I very promptly received an email from Alex saying that he thought it’d be more comfortable if I had 2 single mag holsters.

I went with his recommendation as he’s the expert. When I received the product I was a little shocked that it came in a plastic shipping bag as opposed to a box but my fears were immediately set aside as I inspected the holsters for damage. They’re definitely strong and durable to travel through the postal system unscathed. I grabbed my Glock 19 with Inforce APL and quickly, yet safely, inserted it into the holster, and then the whole contraption into my pants. I decided that it needed more retention so I removed it and tightened it with a coin, like many other smart designs allow. After some trial and error I got it to a retention level that I felt comfortable with.

The inside of the holster is smooth and allows for quick retrieval of your weapon while the outside has the familiar feel of kydex, rough yet soft. Wearing this has been a breeze and comfort has never been an issue. I've since wore it to two weddings, one of which I was a groomsmen, and no one had a clue. I recently tripped while running and the holster held up, kept my firearms secure, and only suffered some light scratches. A nice thing about its design is that I’ve successfully carried this setup as appendix, on the hip, behind the hip, and small of back positions. The clip on it is very sturdy yet still flexible to enough to bend far beyond any belt they can accommodate. I’m unsure of a way to make it any better without the addition of adjustable cant.

Bravo Concealment RTT Holster Combo Pack

I remember listening to a podcast back when I first became a gun owner, and one of the hosts jokingly claimed that when you become a concealed carrier, you are almost guaranteed to have a drawer full of holsters at some point. Sure enough I can support that claim now that I have multiple handguns, each of them needing a holster for inside the waistband (IWB) or outside the waistband (OWB) carry. Add in a mounted weapon light, and thats another set of holsters. The good news is many other gun owners have the same problem, and kydex holster companies have attempted convertible holsters that can easily be swapped between OWB and IWB.

One such holster is the RTT Holster from Bravo Concealment. Available in a combo pack that includes both IWB and OWB belt clips for either training or competition use, or carrying concealed inside the waistband. The combo pack also includes kydex magazine holsters, either as two single mag pouches or one double mag pouch.  The RTT holster is designed to fulfill most of the requirements for a defensive pistol class setting, all for one solid price.

The RTT Holster gets it's name from Range Time-Tactical Shooting, LLC. You maybe more familiar with their YouTube Channel of gear reviews and training promo vids. The RTT Holster Combo Pack is marketed as the gear package ideal for taking a RTT Defensive Pistol Class. Bravo Concealment offers the RTT holster separately as a lightbearing or plain standalone holster for $74.99 if you already have mag pouches you prefer to run in the classroom or competition, as well as the standalone magazine holsters as either double, or two single magazine pouches.

 In wearing the RTT holster and mag pouches around the farm for a week with my Smith & Wesson M&P357c w/ Streamlight TLR3, I really appreciate the robust construction and the hand-fitted care that when into the components. The inward curve of the belt loops on the holster and pouches fits the natural curve of the body as well as provides good friction against the belt, so your rig wont be sliding around your waistline all day.

The advantage to selecting two single mag pouches is the flexibility on the belt, you can either place both side by side on the support hand side, just one, or mix it up to fit your training scenario. There is an option to have the bottom edge of the kydex pouch cut slanted to allow for better mobility during pronating or crouching exercises. Another great feature Bravo Concealment puts into these mag pouches is a tensioning screw just to the right edge of the magazine that can be tightened or loosened with a screwdriver. Most holster makers will tell you to heat up the kydex to be pliable enough for manually reforming, but its nice to see this maintenance step simplified into the engineering of the mag pouches. Logically they will be used more frequently that the main handgun holster during courses of fire (unless your only practicing your drawing mechanics) so its nice to able to adjust the tension on the fly.

The RTT holster itself is an all around good OWB holster. Strictly speaking, outside the waistband kydex holsters all sort of look the same. The key differences between them to me are the cut and the clips. By cut, I mean the top opening of the holster. There's a balance thats needed in order to protect the trigger guard yet expose the magazine release, as well as leaving adequate clearance for the gripping hand's fingers to get a full, firm purchase on the handgun's grip... especially under duress. Several draw-strokes under standing, sitting, and kneeling positions were all positive in my testing.

The clips, or belt loops in this case, are what I would consider and great choice for OWB carry and training scenarios. Instead of using actual clips that would allow the holster to be attached or removed without unfastening the belt, Bravo uses polymer injection molded belt loops. These require the belt to be threaded through the loops at the same time as your pant belt loops, unless you run an exterior tactical belt which of course is possible by selecting one of the 1.5" - 2" belt width options on the Bravo concealment website. These loops are really ideal for heavy duty drills and generally harder use than other style clips, as they will withstand more stress from drawing and reholstering forces. I've seen other OWB kydex holsters on the market with thinner belt loops cut from the same kydex sheet and I was never really impressed by their thinness and sharp edges. Also a note: Bravo offers pancake-style belt loops separately.

This brings me to the IWB capability of the RTT Holster, which for me did not go well. My real only issue with this holster as an IWB option is it was very uncomfortable for a shooter my size.  I carried it in the 4 o'clock position like I'm accustomed to carrying with other IWB holster types, and just feels like a huge hard object not conforming to my hip at all. For context. my build is north of 220lbs, and the holsters I usually wear for CCW are leather backed with a half kydex shell.  I've tried adjusting the RTT to an appendix carry position, and an almost 5-6 o'clock position to reduce the direct pressure on my hip with some relief, but still just not feasible for me unless 5.11 decides to make tactical sweatpants.

Now take note, if you have a slimmer body type, this holster should ride better on your hip. However with that said, I also found difficulty with the IWB soft clips themselves as they interfere with the drawing hand. Even with the clips mounted at their lowest position on the holster's grommets and adjusted for a 1.25" width belt, there wasn't enough clearance for my fingers when drawing the weapon, and I by no means have sausage fingers! My second grievance is they are tricky to loop under the belt and snap with one hand or without looking. I'm not sure why the button snaps themselves were so difficult either, but I wasn't able to figure out how to snap them correctly in one attempt. These are just not working for me, but it is worth noting that Bravo Concealment also sells polymer injection molded IWB belt clips that would be preferable in my opinion over these soft belt clips.

All in all, I would certainly recommend getting the RTT Holster Combo Pack if you wanted a starter's kit for training courses or competitive shooting events, especially if you wanted to retain a mounted weapon light on your gun using an outside the waistband holster. If your class / competition requirements include a IWB holster and you are confident this style of holster will fit inside your pants, I would say get the 1.5" or 1.75" IWB belt loops instead of the soft clips. The gear is solid, and the customer service at Bravo Concealment is on point. Now get your gear and hit the range!

Crew Holsters "Shadow" IWB Holster

I received the Shadow holster from "The Crew Custom Holsters" some time ago.  The Shadow is a kydex clam shell style inside the waistband (IWB) holster.  I have been wearing the Shadow for a while to try it out.  It is comfortable for a kydex style holster.  The model I received was in black, but they offer lots of different color and pattern options.  They also offer the Shadow for light or laser mounted firearms and tons of different models of firearms.  You can wear it just about anywhere from appendix all the way around to about 5 o'clock.  I typically wear it around the 3:30 position.  It seems to conceal the firearm well, as my children and wife did not notice me wearing it.  One big advantage this holster has over others is that it can be canted frontwards or even backwards.  There are different holes where the clip is located to adjust it to Zero, 15, or 45 degrees.  I tried it in all 3 positions and found that the zero and 15 worked best.  The 45 degree cant seemed strange, but someone may have a use for it.  The fit and finish of the holster are very good. They smooth the edges out and try to eliminate any sharp surfaces.  Mine is for a Kahr CM9 and it fits nicely and, with the adjustable retention, holds the pistol well.  The holster does collapse a small amount when there is no firearm in it.  It didn't seem to collapse enough to make reholstering difficult, but I did notice it.  I usually wear a hybrid style holster, but have found that with this little holster, the single clip makes it ideal to slip on and off easily.  If I need to run to the store at night or something similar, I can just grab this holster and clip it inside my waistband with no problems.  The Shadow is a very nice, convenient holster.  They will also do custom one off holsters if asked.

Sticky Holster

I’ll start off this product review by admitting that I am someone who is very hard to please when it comes to holsters. I think that may be a majority of the people who carry as well, but I am especially difficult in this regard. I absolutely hate tucking in shirts, and nothing is more annoying to me than having my firearm rubbing into my side all day. Because of this, I have been mostly relegated to pocket carry for the majority of my life. A good pocket holster should break up the outline of the firearm, as well as create a margin of safety by covering the trigger guard. An IWB holster should do the same thing. With most pocket holsters, retention of the holster on the draw is accomplished by having either a small hook-like appendage on the holster to snag on the pocket during the draw, or a sticky substance on the outside that tends to snag on the pocket material during the draw. Most IWB holsters accomplish this retention by using some sort of a belt clip, either plastic or metal (or button loops on some designs) that retain the holster in the pants during the draw stroke. The Sticky Holster uses the tacky outer surface material do accomplish this. However, the idea behind the Sticky holster goes much further than just pocket carry.

The Sticky Holster is designed to be quite versatile. The models that are designed for smaller framed guns, like my J-Frame, can be used one of two ways; either as a traditional pocket holster in a pants pocket, or as an IWB holster, wherever the user would prefer the firearm. Some guns are more suited to IWB carry than others, and some guns are more suited to pocket carry than others. It all comes down to personal preference. That would be one place where I would say the Sticky Holster shines. Rather than the user needing to purchase two separate holsters for two different modes of carry, the Sticky Holster can function either way. If you get up one day and decide that the pants you’re wearing have big enough pockets for pocket carry, you can put your firearm in the Sticky and put it in your pocket. If you decide that the pants you have on don’t really support pocket carry, you can tuck the whole firearm and holster unit into your waistband between your side and your belt and carry it IWB. The clipless design allows for the user to put the holster and firearm wherever on their beltline they would prefer, and this could be a significant advantage, as some pants have belt loops that tend to always be in the EXACT location where you want to put the firearm. Not having to contend with the exposed clip allows for many more location options.

For my test & evaluation purposes, I was provided with the MD-5 size holster from Sticky. It is designed to hold snubby revolvers with a barrel length up to 2.125”. It fit the revolver well, and the quality of construction and materials were quite nice. I must admit, this is my first experience with a holster of this style, and many of the things I experienced when using the Sticky holster could be chalked up to my inexperience with the system. When pocket carrying the Sticky holster, the retention was good during the draw, and the holster covering the hammer helped to prevent any snags during the draw. One of the negatives I found when pocket carrying with my J-frame was that there seemed to be quite a lot of extra material toward the bottom edge of the holster. This was causing the holster and gun to be pushed up and somewhat out of my pocket slightly when I sat down in the car. Perhaps this could be an issue with the pants I wear (Carhartt’s) but could also be an issue with a little too much material on the holster. It's not a deal breaker for the product, but something to be aware of for those folks who are buying the Sticky as a main pocket carry holster.

Carrying IWB with the Sticky holster is pretty easy, but it does take some getting used to for those people who are accustomed to having a clipped IWB design. The Sticky uses the compression of your belt against your side in conjunction with the tacky material to afford retention of the holster and firearm. I tried this with several different types of pants and gym shorts and found myself to be most comfortable with the Sticky while using normal pants and a belt for retention. There were a few times that after fast running or jumping that the Sticky had moved from where I had originally placed it. I had a similar issue with it while sitting down in the car. This could be a function of my body type and the type of seats I have in my vehicle, but it is something for the prospective buyer to be aware of. There is versatility in this holster, but it may not work for everyone, depending upon your lifestyle and comfort level. I have heard people talk about using the Sticky as a holster for when they are wearing pants or shorts that are not meant to be worn with a belt, and that use a simple drawstring for compression around the waist. I tried this several times, but the Sticky holster just did not feel secure enough for me in the waistband for me to trust this method of carry with that style of pant. Granted, I am carrying a very NON-lightweight J-frame (Stainless Model 60) so that method of carry may work better for people carrying a lighter weight weapon, but for me it just didn’t work out as well.

In closing, the Sticky holster is a good product that does help out in the holster decision process. It offers a versatility you sometimes won’t find with other holsters, and does so at a competitive price. I see that Sticky is planning on offering a reinforced model soon (Spring 2015) and that should alleviate some of my concerns with the thickness of the material. The instructions provided with the Sticky are clear and conscise, and explain the process for safe use of the holster, as well as the cleaning process (Which is very easy!). If you are someone who needs a versatile holster, and just can’t seem to find one which fits your needs, check out the Sticky Holster. It did not work well for me as an IWB holster, and worked best as a pocket style holster, but it may fill the IWB & Pocket Holster needs for you!

Alien Gear Cloak Tuck 2.0 IWB Holster Review

The market for inside the waistband (IWB) holsters has seen a surge of innovation in design and materials in the recent years. At first glance they may all seem the same in form and function, but anyone who carries concealed on a regular basis will know the difference on the hip. Each concealed carrier has a different frame, and can be themselves a variable as to what brand of holster fits best. A lightweight holster with the right combination of materials can be the solution that fits wider (and thinner) range of people.

Enter the 'Cloak Tuck 2.0' from Alien Gear Holsters.  This IWB holster stands out from the pack with a unique composition. Technically referred to as a hybrid, the lightweight design has a soft Neoprene backing that is thinner and more flexible than traditional leather backings, and provides a better conforming fit and comfort to your body. The Neoprene material is completely waterproof, which will prevent corrosive sweat from soaking in and reaching your pistol. The secret to the backing is an internal ABS polymer core that gives flex but is strong enough to not sag down with the weight of a hefty handgun.

The Alien Gear Cloak Tuck 2.0 IWB Holster has a plastic handgun half-shell that is fully swappable for versatility with other guns in your collection. The shell is made in a quicker fashion than most other 'boutique' kydex holsters, and this simplicity in the manufacturing process trickles right down to the price tag for the end user. By no means is this a poor quality holster, just the responsibility for retention is shared amongst the belt, waistband of the belt, and the user's hip. I know it's far from rocket science, but sometimes the simpler solutions are the best.  The half shell reduced the overall profile of the holster, and thus prevents factors that cause imprinting of the firearm through clothing.

The Cloak Tuck 2.0 holster comes equipped either with Alien Gear's standard nylon clips, designed for 1 .25" to 1.5"  inch belts, or their steel clips that fit belts up to 1.75" inches. For enhanced conceal-ability, there are nylon "C" clips and "J" clips are also available on the website as add-on items. These clips would be ideal for anyone who tucks their shirt over the pistol, and does not wish to have obvious clips exposed over the top of the belt. The "C' or "J" clips go beneath the belt and hook under the edges, which gives a more innocuous look. The holster also includes a parts pack containing multi sized screws and rubber spacers, along with one T Nut, Finish Washer, and 3/32 Hex Key.

I ordered this holster for the Smith & Wesson M&P Shield, to really get a sense of concealability of a single stack defensive pistol. Borrowing a friend's Shield, we were both able to test the holster by drawing in the standing, sitting, and walking positions. After comparing notes, we both agreed the Cloak Tuck 2.0 had a better feel than other holsters we both respectively have tried in the past. The Neoprene was soft on the skin and keeps your skin from feeling sweaty, irritated or suffocated at the end of the day. The thinness and flexibility also made inserting and removing the holster from the pants easier than rigid leather-backed holsters. This, along with the lightweight, may also fit your regularly sized pants instead of having a designated pair thats one size up to accommodate an IWB holster.

The only factors I took as a trade-off with this holster are two-fold:  When reholstering the firearm, the flexible backing will deform instead of guide your muzzle downward into position. I found that reholstering from a slight angle caused this issue to repeat, and the slide could come out of battery. Leather offers more resistance that would guide the gun into position easier, but during an altercation the holstering is the slowest and least critical part anyways.  The second issue I found was more of a personal preference. Instead of grommeted or regular holes for adjusting the ride height, Alien Gear had installed all 6 nuts, leaving 4 exposed. While this makes for initial configuration faster and easier, removing the unused nuts with barbed backings would be more troublesome than leaving them installed, leaving them exposed WILL wear on your clothes overtime.

** I've decreased the rating to 6.5 since initially reviewing this holster, as issues and wear have shown more over time. Upon first look of the Remora Clip-less holster, I thought there was absolutely no way this holster would work for me. However, after wearing this holster a number of times, I am amazed at the comfort. Often times I had to reach down to my hip to make sure my firearm was still intact. The non-slip material is everything as advertised. My firearm remained in place. Also, this holster is great as a deep pocket concealment holster. The price is very reasonable for just about everyone who wishes to conceal. Overall, I have very little complaint and I recommend this holster for anyone searching a low cost comfortable holster.

Alien Gear Holster Cloak Tuck Review

By James M. Smith In search for a high quality and good value holster I did a lot of looking and research before making a decision. When I came across Alien Gear Holster I was immediately intrigued. They offer, what appeared to be, a good quality holster at an exceptional price. They as offer their holster with a lifetime warranty. Of course, with a company that is only a couple years old that doesn't mean much, but hopefully they will stay around for a long time. I decided to go ahead and give Alien Gear a shot. For under $40 shipped I got the tan leather holster for my Full-Size M&P9. I was comparing this with the Crossbreed holsters and getting one of those with the horsehide and the “combat cut” would have been pushing $100. Is the Crossbreed worth the extra cost? I don’t know as I haven’t had any personal experience with them.

At the time that I ordered, shipping times were about three weeks and they were able to meet that deadline. The holster arrived in a nice padded shipping envelope and inside that was the start to a beautiful relationship. The holster was bagged in a cool black bag with Alien Gear's logo on it. This was a really nice touch for such a budget priced item.

The leather seems to be of high quality and had the edges are nicely smoothed. So, I unloaded my gun and inserted it into the holster and tightened the retention screws to make it snug. Now, as with most IWB holsters, you don’t get full retention until it is inside the waistband and your belt snugged up around it. Knowing this I made sure to make it snug but it was still loose enough that it will fall out if you do the standard retention test of turning the holster upside down. While doing these initial adjustments and inspections, I noticed one thing I do not like about the Alien Gear Holster. The leather and the kydex do not fully cover the trigger guard by the grip. Is this a huge issue? I don’t really think so. The trigger itself is fully covered and if anything were to get in there it would still be behind the trigger, so accidental discharges should not be an issue. It is just my pickiness that makes me even mention it. I feel that they can and should make a change to their molds and leather cutting process to get it fully covered. I don’t think it would affect the ability to get a good grip on your firearm for drawing. On that note I’m glad that I went with a combat cut holster. The combat cut has the leather cut really close to your firearms grip, so it is possible to get a firing grip while the gun is still holstered. This makes it so that you don’t need to do a lot of adjusting of your hand hold after it is out to the holster.

I don’t have much to compare with, but I find this holster to be very comfortable. It does not rub or pinch. I have not tested it in extreme heat yet, as I got it in March, but I have not experienced hot spots or anything. The only time I’ve really experienced any discomfort is when I am riding in my car. I have a hard time getting completely comfy in that car anyway. It is just a matter of finding the position.

Concealability. I think this is more of a factor of the firearm I carry. I carry a Full-Size M&P9 and with the large full-size grip it is hard to get good concealment. Even with the holster set at its lowest setting I have a hard time keeping the grip under my shirts.

Comfort Holsters Bentley Comfort Holster Review

I really love it when my initial impressions of a product are wrong. When I first received the Bentley Comfort Holster, I thought the unique materials were some sort of gimmick to justify the premium price tag. After carrying with the holster for a few days in a row, I'm happy to say "Boy, I was wrong!" There's an metaphoric expression used to compare the quality of a product to a highly reputable classic car maker... "the Rolls Royce of ___" is what people say. I can venture to say that this holster got its name, because it is "the Bentley of Holsters."

First let me preface by stating that I own several different inside the waistband holsters, and they each have gotten their fair use.  I do have a favorite out of the bunch, that has warped to my body after being worn repeatedly, and feels pretty good now that it's been 'Ryanitized' by my love handles. By the end of the evening, especially if it was a particularly active day, my body is relieved when its time to take that holster off. The air finally gets a chance to wick away sweat that accumulates with unbreathable skin-on-leather contact, even with a layer of fabric in between. Then there's the circular indent left behind. I do not expect the comforting concept of having a concealed defensive pistol to be in itself comfortable to bare, and that has been a mantra in the concealed training world for awhile now. With all the advancements in leather and kydex, we still have to endure some discomfort in order to be secure when using conventional IWB holsters. I'm pleased to have found an alternative that effectively throws that paradigm out the window.

Comfort Holsters claims this is the most comfortable holster in the world. A bold claim indeed, something that every holster manufacturer attempts to boast! The flagship model in Comfort Holsters' product line is called "The Bentley Comfort" holster. The Bentley uses a unique gel layer wrapped in suede material, which pads a full kydex chassis on the hip-facing side. The full chassis of kydex provides maximum retention of the firearm, while protecting the metal's finish from sweat. The gel pad reminds me of high end orthotic insoles in a prescription shoe, which is actually a really good way to compare the beneficial qualities of the material. Gel obviously molds to outside forces, your hip in this case. This eliminates abrasions, chaffing, and putting undue pressure on your body that some conventional IWB holsters can cause. Now wrapping that jelly material in soft suede not only feels pleasant to the touch but allows skin the breathe, which resolves something a leather backed holster design suffers from greatly. The result is an all day comfort that I personally had never really appreciated until it came time to remove the Bentley from my pants at the end of  day one... the relief of pressure and drastic "Aaaaahhh, much better" feeling was missing. Meaning the Bentley and my body were ready for another 9+ hour day of carrying, and that's a feeling I have never experienced with any other holster I've tried.

The Bentley holster has two leather tabs, more like wings, that provide the mounting for two belt clips. Unlike other holsters, the clips are not spread out. The Bentley is smaller more compact design with clips specifically placed asymmetrically for functional purposes. The rear clip is less than an inch from the kydex, with its clip positioned underneath the pistol grip. This, combined with a short, rigid double layer of leather which the manufacturer calls the "Cling Tab," causes a pulling / torque of the holster inward so that the grip follows the contour of your body, instead of remaining parallel to your frame like other holsters. The front/foward tab is a single layer of leather and is longer and mounted to follow the inward taper of the kydex, allowing it to flex and follow the contour of your waistband. This design has two primary intended results: reduce "printing" or broadcasting you are concealing a firearm through an imprint in clothing, and not needing a break-in period for the holster to warp and conform to your body.

From my testing, which included drawing my S&W M&Pc for dry fire practice for a couple weeks, I found that I am pleasantly pleased with the Comfort Holsters Bentley Comfort holster. The marketing hype on the Comfort Holsters website seems overreaching if you've never given it a try, but I can honestly assess that a lot of thought and engineering went into designing and building a better IWB holster. Some personal notes I found during my testing and evaluation are:

• If you prefer to carry exactly in the 3 o'clock position, the Bentley doesn't feel 'right'. It printed much more for me at this apex of my hip. I found that moving it back to the 4 - 4:30 position was the 'sweet spot' for me. I normally don't carry this far back because more traditional IWB holsters have a wider leather backing, and would cause pinching/discomfort in the kidney area when in the sitting position. The Bentley's smaller profile was almost unnoticeable when sitting at my office desk and driving around town.
• The rearward clip on the Cling Tab is directly located below the front strap of the grip, and if you adjust the seating depth so your gun sits deeper in your pants, the clearance for your fingers gets really tight. My digits began to wear on the knuckles of the index and middle fingers during drawing practice, and would often interfere with getting a good purchase on the grip frame. I wouldn't say that I have gorilla mits, but if you have fatter booger hooks than I do you will encounter this too. Best to leave the rear clip in its lowest position.
• The smell of the adhesive that binds the suede/gel panel to the kydex body is very pungent. If it weren't for the instructions addressing this, I would have been concerned for my safety in a tightly spaced environment. No worries, the off gassing dissipated after about 2 days.

Note: If you want a holster made to fit your rail mounted light or laser, just ask Rob. I wish I had a TLR-3 on a S&W M&Pc molded up, but failed to ask.

N82 Tactical Original Holster Review

Although my current geographical situation precludes me from carrying concealed, being a good American consumer, and a lover of all things gun related, I still get holsters every once in a while. Perhaps, it's just in case hell freezes over and NJ becomes a shall issue state, or maybe as a pinch of preparedness. Either way, just like my firearms collection, the handguns that I have holsters for are varied. Outside the waistband holster for the like of my Sig 226 and kydex IWB holster for my Glock 19 and now the N82 Tactical Original for my little J-frame or Glock 19.

In carry philosophy, there are a few ideals which need to be lived up to in varying degrees. One is the concept of that the best carry handgun is the one you have with you, it is the one that you will have on your person every day no days off. This can be lived up to, depending on where you are located, where you travel, work, etc. Another one is more in the application of the holster. The weapons security is crucial in a defensive scenario. You could need to run, drive, or carry someone, basically anything that would require two hands in the middle of, or after, the shooting. For the very same reason you use a holster in the first place and carry it concealed, you want to carry that defensive tool in as safe and secure a manner as possible. What I am getting at is re-holstering ability. If you pocket carry with no holster, then it’s a moot point, but if you're carrying using a holster, the ability to re-holster that defensive tool could be a deal breaker in your philosophy of use.

To me, these are the two biggest considerations, aside from concealability, to consider when choosing a holster. A concealed carry permit does you no good if you can’t carry safely in all manner of dress or it is not comfortable and you leave it at home. So, to me, the consistency of your carry slightly edges out re-holster ability.

Something else that impresses me is the price. The most powerful impact of the concealed carry movement is that it re-took the right to self defense from the elite and rich and brought it back to the people. The affordable price point on the original design makes a very comfortable, secure carry system available to more people which, in my book, is a good thing. Put a used J-frame in this holster and for less than 300 bucks total you will have a reliable proven gun with great defensive loads in a comfortable, secure holster and, all-in-all, will be a system that can pretty much disappear on most people.

Alien Gear IWB Holster Review

I ordered the Alien Gear IWB holster because I liked the price.  The holster is everything I expected it to be and more.  The Alien Gear holster is an Inside The Waistband (IWB) holster of the hybrid variety.  It has a large leather back panel and a kydex shell.  This holster is tuckable and comes with metal belt hooks, an option is available for leather hoops also.  The holster arrives with a bag full of extra hardware, which can be used to vary the amount of tension on the gun.  It varies the tension by adjusting the screws that hold the shell on.  Between the shell and the leather backing are some rubber grommets to do this tension adjustment.  Ride height and cant can also be adjusted by moving the belt loops around.  I ordered the tan leather but black is also available as an option.  The holster is available for a vast selection of pistols and comes in a combat cut only, this means that the grip of the pistol is not backed by leather and therefore it rests against you skin or undershirt.   An option is also available to just purchase the outer shell, or trade your original shell, for a new one if you change firearms.  I experienced the shell swapping, because on my original order they sent my holster system for the wrong firearm.  I contacted them and they sent a new shell out the next day.  This was great, until the new shell came for the same wrong firearm.  It then took 3 weeks to finally get a hold of them to tell them about the new mix up. So 5 weeks after the initial holster arrived I received the correct shell and was able to try the holster out.  I have found the holster to be really comfortable and hides the firearm nicely.

N82 Tactical Professional Glock Holster Review

N82 Tactical is a holster manufacturer out of North Carolina and I have only ever seen positive reviews lauding the company's owners and holsters. Their "Engineered for Comfort" tagline pretty much summarizes their corporate philosophy when it comes to manufacturing holsters. Not shy of self promotion, the N82 website boasts that "The N82 Tactical Professional holster is the ultimate IWB (inside-the-waistband) holster. It has all the comfort of our Original design, but comes with the following additional features: Adjustable Cant, Tuckable, Excellent Positive Retention." While I agree with the 'Tuckable' part, I have had issues with the comfort, adjustable cant, and positive retention.

First, I do not find the holster to be very comfortable. The holster is extremely thick and rigid. If using it in the appendix position, you can forget about bending over. It is very large and awkward.

Second, if you don't like your cant constantly adjusting, this holster is not for you. Only 1 screw holds the clip to the polycarbonate shell. This screw loosens quite easily  causing the holster to shift. If you attempt to lock-tite the screw, you void your warranty.

Finally, the holster does not offer positive retention as advertised. In one of the promotional advertisements for this holster, a man was shown lying down on a couch taking a nap. This is a terrible idea in this holster especially if you have kids around. Several times when I laid down with the holster replicating their claims, the gun fell out of the holster. Due to the design, it only has positive retention when you are standing.

Due to the thickness of the holster back and hard polycarbonate shell, it will require quite a bit of room in the pants to hide this holster. If you are a stay at home mom or dad and practice home-carry, this is an ok option. I have found that I have to constantly readjust the cant due to the clip loosening. Furthermore, it requires frequent adjustment to my underwear as the holster literally pushes by briefs down.

Provided that you don't attempt to bend over or flex at the waist, this holster might work. Or, if your doctor requires that you be immobilized in an upright position, this might also be an option. Until, that is, your underwear starts sagging.

VersaCarry Zero Bulk Holster for Ruger LC9 Review

As a gun owner new to conceal carry I'm not exactly sure which holster is best for me. I did find however that the Versacarry ZeroBulk holster is not the one for me.  Very uncomfortable to wear. Imagine most gun owners will not like the idea that the retention rod leaves a residue.   I found this holster to be very uncomfortable although small and lightweight. There isn't any padding/leather between the firearm and body as found in other types of holsters. VersaCarry’s “safety warnings” page should give you a clue for what you’re in for. This is probably not a holster that meets your needs.

VersaCarry should be called Very Expensive piece of plastic. It's not scary expensive, but being priced over an actual "holster" puts it in that category. Sure, you can easily access your piece, but when you have to put it away or even just put it on, you have to completely take it off, shove that plastic stud back into the barrel and "shimmy" back inside your pants.

Concealment Solutions Black Mamba CE Review

Concealment Solutions is a small company located in Provo, Utah run by an excellent guy named Jason Christensen. The Black Mamba CE is a hybrid Kydex/leather, inside-the-waistband holster. There are two models of the Black Mamba, the original and CE. The CE offers the “combat” cut leather that keeps you from grabbing the holster at the same time as the gun, which is a great feature at only a $5 increase. There are tons of models available, but if you are local to the Provo area Jason will take the time to custom fit any gun he doesn’t have a mold for. I purchased my Black Mamba for the Glock 26 I was carrying at the time. When I put it on, I immediately knew it was the perfect holster for me. I had previously been carrying in an all Kydex IWB holster that held the pistol straight up and entirely too high with no adjustments, which made even the subcompact Glock difficult to conceal, sometimes. Once I got my Mamba adjusted, I realized I could conceal even a full-size pistol. So much so, that I traded my subcompact Glock 26 for a compact Glock 19. One of the great features of this holster is the incredible range of adjustability. On either side of the Kydex shell, in the leather, there are two tuckable clips mounted. Each clip has the option of being moved up or down by unscrewing the hardware and moving it to a different hole. This allows you to change the depth of the pistol in your waistband and, also, the cant of the grip, allowing you to carry it just the way you want it. The Kydex shell has a molded-in sight channel that is plenty large for any different sights you want to put on your pistol. There is a flare at the top that helps you guide the pistol back in. There is also a flare at the bottom, where the rail is, that I can only assume is to reduce the risk of the rail catching on the Kydex on the way out. Jason provides excellent customer service and answers emails very promptly. I would(and do) recommend the Black Mamba to anyone and everyone that needs a great concealment holster.
