Sig Sauer 1911-22 Pistol Review

I know what you're thinking; "Why would I want a 1911 that shoots .22?" Well, the answer is simple, because it's a blast!

This Sig Sauer (formerly GSG) 1911-22 is a full size 1911. The operation, and ergonomics are identical to a Colt M1911A1 pistol. In fact, many parts are interchangeable with a standard 1911-45. However, unlike the M1911A1, ammo doesn't cost an arm and a leg. It's this very reason that many people opt to supplement their training with a .22LR.

It comes in a decent hard shell, foam lined case. Included in the case are Allen keys (needed for takedown), 2 magazines, a pistol lock, a replacement guide rod buffer disc, a chamber brush, and 2 front sight posts(2 sizes).

One of the really cool additional features of this (well, not this one, because I reside in California) pistol is that the barrel is threaded by the factory. Unfortunately, the cap on my pistol is fixed due to my state of residence.

Take down is very similar to a standard 1911. However, there are additional pins that require the use of an Allen key. I was originally bothered by this, but it's not a deal breaker.

The pistol is made of some type of alloy, and as such cannot be finished with a traditional hot blue. I suppose this was done to keep the cost down. The finish is not great. It seems like some type of paint, and it scratched/wears easily if you're not careful. It is my biggest complaint about the pistol. Another area of concern are the sights. They're bright, and it's easy to get a good sight picture, but they're made of plastic! Perhaps this is why they supply a replacement front sight in the kit.

At the range, this pistol performed beautifully. I used the recommended CCI Mini Mag for the break-in period, and did not have a single misfeed, or failure to eject. Since the break-in period, I have fed several other brands of ammo thru it without any problems. Considering the price point, I feel that the accuracy of this pistol is excellent. The wood grips feel pretty good in my hands, and if they're not your cup of tea then just replace them with your favorite 1911 grips. Overall, I am very pleased with this purchase.

Sig Sauer 1911 .22 Review

Now I am a 1911 guy. I love all 1911’s. Unfortunately this is only my second one I currently own. I purchased the Sig Sauer 1911 .22 so I could train with “cheaper ammo”. I know, what 22LR? Well I have been able to keep a steady supply and its definitely cheaper than .45. Also my son is kinda fond of my Colt 1911 in .45 but is a little to small to shoot it yet. This on the other hand he shoots like a pro. It is a bit picky about ammo and needs the good stuff (hi velocity) tho cycle the slide reliably. Now as it turns out, this pistol is manufactured for Sig Sauer by GSG and GSG seems to sale for about $100 less. Why did I buy the Sig? Because I found it in the store. Also I feel the finish might be a little better compared to the GSG’s I have seem. Or maybe that is my justification for paying more. It came with only one magazine so I went online to purchase extra’s and found that they are about $30 dollars. I also discovered there are few nifty accessories and upgrades for the Sig Sauer/GSG. They make +4 followers for the magazines as well as +1 and +3 base plates. I also discovered an accurizing kit that replaces the guide rod and bushing with stainless parts. Although I have only had this for a short time, I have put 5-600 rounds through it with only a couple of misfeeds. I really like the fit and finish as well as the extended ambi-safety and extended slide release.

FIREClean Review

Fireclean gun oil is one of the best gun oils I have used to date.  It does everything it should do and more. It lubricates, protects, cleans, and most importantly it helps reduce carbon buildup.  While using Fireclean I have found that my rimfire's will shoot for a longer number of rounds and are easier to clean. The carbon and even lead deposits seem to just wipe off.  When using this oil with a suppressor on an AR15 there is less buildup of gunk on the bolt carrier.  Fireclean lubricates extremely well, it makes rifles and pistols cycle smoother and is better than any other oil I have used.

StealthGear ONYX IWB Holster for Springfield XD 40 Sub-Compact Review

Overall, I am very new to the concealed carry scene, purely due to the fact that I live in Illinois, and up until 2 months ago it wasn't an option. However, those days are over. I was like any other person that was new to concealed carry in the fact that I was overwhelmed with the amount of holster choices available to me. IWB? OWB? Kydex? Leather? Hybrid? The list goes on and on. My daily carry gun is a Springfield XD40 Sub-Compact, so this is what I was looking to conceal. I ended up with a StealthGear ONYX IWB Holster. Based on my overall satisfaction of this holster, I don't think that I could have gone with a better first choice for a holster, right out of the gate!

However, I choose to continue to wear this holster...it is that comfortable that I do not even notice it or find it bothersome.

As far as the rest of the features go, everything else is of pure quality. The function and fit are great. I have positive retention between the holster and gun at all times, and in many different positions. The feel of this holster, even against bare skin is vey comfortable, not just between layers. The ride height and the cant are both adjustable to your liking as well. Like I stated before, this is the first holster that I started to carry with (I have since had others purchased for one reason or another for this gun and others), and I think that I was lucky finding the best one. With that being said, it took me a week or two decide what combination of position, along with ride height, and cant worked best for me. This StealthGear ONYX IWB holster allowed me to find that perfect combination with ease.

Laser Ammo - SureStrike Ultimate LE Edition

The SureStrike Ultimate LE Edition laser trainer is a cool package deal. In it you get a laser trainer cartridge for 9mm, .40 S&W, and .45 ACP, and a .223 laser cap. You also get pistol barrel inserts to make sure that your firearm is clear, a carrying case, and 6 reflective targets. The targets have little holes so you can hang or pin them up. The Laser caps are really easy to use, you just have to swap out one part for another to switch to a different caliber. You have to make sure you put it together right. I accidentally assembled it for .223 but left the 9mm laser cap on it. It got stuck in the chamber and after we got it out of the AR the laser trainer was stuck together. It took a lot of work and a couple vice grips to get it apart but afterwards I was able to  assemble it the right way and “shoot” the AR. Later I tried it out in a brand new M&P-15 and the bolt had a little trouble closing on it. If you racked the charging handle and released the bolt it slam into battery with a little hiccup towards the end. It’s great for trigger control and practicing using a DA/SA or DAO gun. If you have a SAO gun the laser trainer doesn't have a rim on it so that you can rack the slide without having to reinsert it. The only issues I had with it were that the .40 S&W insert and 9mm laser cap were not marked, it fit snug in the M&P-15(not the other AR), and that I messed up assembling the .223 trainer. Overall this is a great package if you have multiple caliber pistols and something in .223(we all know I mean an AR-15).

Voodoo Tactical 42" MOLLE Soft Rifle Case

The Voodoo Tactical 42" MOLLE Soft Rifle Case is an excellent product for numerous applications. It is useful for trips to the range, 3-gun matches or even hunting trips.  With enough storage for many accessories including rifles, pistols, ammunition, hearing and eye protection, magazines, or anything else one might want to take with them.  The case is well padded inside and out, even having padding around the edges where the heavy duty zippers are located.  Inside the case you will find a padded divider between the two rifle/shotgun compartments.  In each of these compartments are two velcro straps to hold the firearms secure.  On the exterior you will find three large pockets to hold magazines, ammo, etc.  Behind these pockets is a large zippered pouch that holds two pistols in their own padded pockets that velcro closed.  Every time I take a firearm or two anywhere, I find myself taking this case.  It is exceptionally built and just a great all around case.

Kimber Eclipse Target ll

I have had this gun for about 10 years now and its still my gun safe queen!  Recently I have resolved to bring her back out and start using it more often.  After all isn't that why we buy guns...so we can enjoy them right?  As soon as I got this Kimber in hand, I decided to put on an extended magwell and Kimber tactical grips.  But that's it! Those were the only mods that I deemed necessary for this beautiful piece of firearm bliss.

OK ... time to get into the meat of the matter.  I have fired approximately 1,500 rounds through this Eclipse.  To be completely honest with you guys, when I first took it to the range, I had some feeding issues with the first 300 rounds.  However after getting it tall broken in, the gun ran flawlessly for the last 10 years.  If you have never held a Kimber, they are extremely tight tolerances with no loose rattling like most other 1911”s.  Everything is worked by hand to ensure maximum accuracy and it is very accurate! My ol’ man can punch an 1”-1 ½” group with this firearm. The Kimber Eclipse has a crisp 4-5lb aluminum match trigger and when you pull the slide to the rear, its very smooth.  In fact, everything about this gun is crisp and smooth. I do have one major qualm with the Kimber …. the black oxide finish seems to wear off too easy, especially on parts like the safety that get a lot of skin contact.  Other than that, the pistol has a solid steel slide and frame that is very well balanced.  The target 2 model comes with a 5” match steel barrel and meprolight adjustable night sights.  Last but not least, the Kimber Eclipse has 30 LPI checkering on the front grip (I love this feature) and come with two 8 round mags.

Smith and Wesson Model 638 Airweight 1.875"

Whatever model it may be, the Smith and Wesson J-Frame has been a go to carry option for decades. I’m going to break this one down short and sweet. This is a slick, incredibly well made, and sharp looking revolver. I could choose to write more but it need not be said. This wheel gun is S&W quality, J-Frame concealability,  and .38 Special +p sensibility all wrapped up into a package that one can either enjoy at the range or carry with confidence.

I find it difficult to spot negatives in design or construction. Engineering a firearm is a give and take. With this type of firearm you sacrifice comfort of shooting and magazine size for a highly concealable and reliable firearm that borders on pocket gun stature. I can't note these things as negatives as they are simply the nature of the beast.

Taurus PT 1911

This firearm is slightly torn, torn between timeless design, and modern affordable production. On the one hand, you have a pure American classic firearm in the 1911 designed by none other than John Moses Browning and put into service in 1911. On the other hand you have Taurus, a company that has been successful by offering cheaper alternatives to more expensive designs offered by other companies. Not to say they don’t make quality firearms, but suffice to say they are not always the most independent when it comes to design. As far as inspiration goes, they lead the way with the PT 1911 pistol. Taurus managed to cram a lot of features into a well-fitted and finished firearm that would normally go for twice as much money. A majority of people agrees that the value in this gun is tremendous, however there are some naysayers. You can find video reviews and blooper vids on youtube showing misfeeds and stove pipes. That’s all fine and dandy, but even the highest end 1911’s can sometimes have growing pains.

I took the plunge on this gun and have not regretted it one bit. It has been just as, if not more reliable than guns twice its price point. Granted if you’re a collector, none of this is all too impressive. The beautiful scalloped cocking serrations of an S&W E-Series, or the almost hand shredding checkering of a Springfield Armory TRP may draw you in more. However, for the budget conscious, or the person who simply wants a 1911 to fill that void, this is the gun for them. It sure was for me.

Beretta U22 Neos

I was in my local gun shop when I saw this Beretta U22 Neos hanging on the wall. I found it interesting as a possible purchase for my son who was really wanting a pistol. I figured he would think it was cool looking. I decided to buy it for his birthday. The model I chose was the 4.5 inch, it also comes in 6 inch. It has a rail permanently attached to the barrel that has an adjustable rear sight, windage and elevation, and a fixed blade in front. The rail on it is for Weaver style mounts. The controls work well and are mostly convenient. It has an ambidextrous safety which is under my thumb and is kind of awkward to take on/off. There is also a carbine kit for it, you unscrew the barrel and remove the hand grip. Replacing both with a 16” barrel and a stocked grip assembly. The main issue with this kit is poor availability and it is priced the same as the original pistol.

Sig Sauer P226 Enhanced Elite 9MM

There is not much to say when it comes to Sig Sauer firearms. They have a reputation for fit and finish that comes from over a hundred years in the firearms manufacturing business. Regardless of the trim level of my gun, I am reviewing a gun that is part of the p226 family of pistols. This pistol design is thirty years old and is still going strong with the new x5 competition models fetching  $2000 plus pricetags. That being said, it is a trusted sidearm for organizations such as the U.S. Secret Service and Navy Seals here in America, as well as police and Special Forces military groups in over two dozen countries world wide.

Sig Sauer P227 Nitron .45 ACP

Released at Shot Show 2013, the P227 in .45 ACP is Sig Sauer’s latest edition to their Classic Series of alloy frame pistols. With a reduced circumference one-piece modular grip, the P227 packs a double-stacked magazine of 10+1 rounds of .45ACP (14 round extended magazine offered soon) into a manageable, very ergonomic package. It’s currently available in two full-size models with 4.4 inch barrels: The P227 Nitron, and the P227 SAS Gen 2.  A “Carry” model, which has a slightly shorter 3.9 inch barrel is also available.

I ordered my P227 Nitron with SigLight night sights from the Sig Sauer Pro Shop in Epping, NH in June, and it arrived at my local FFL in late November. The pistol ships with two 10 round magazines, E2 grip removal tool, hard case, owner’s manual, and cable lock. Because I have yet to get my hands on the SAS or Carry version of the P227, this review will be based on my experience with the P227 Nitron.

The P227 shares the same frame dimensions with the P220 and P226 with an overall length of 7.70 inches, height of 5.5 inches and width of 1.5 inches.  This allows it to fit in holsters designed for the P226R and P220R. I tested the P227 in several duty holsters designed for the P226, including the Safariland ALS holster with attached Streamlight TLR-1s without any issue. The P227 also fit into several polymer paddle style holsters designed for the 226R and the 220R, including 5.11 Thumb Drive, Black Hawk CQC and Safariland ALS. I have yet to find a holster that would fit my P226 that would not accept the P227. Magazine pouches are a different story, of course, but I’d rather buy new mag pouches than holsters any day.

The P227 comes standard with Sig’s E2 (Enhanced Ergonomics) single-piece “screwless” grips with a skate-tape like texture. A noticeable addition to the P227 is the single finger groove milled into the front strap of the grip directly below the trigger guard. This adds to the slim feel of the grip and seems to improve the overall handling of the pistol, especially when drawing from a holster. Fine checkering on the remainder of the front strap improves traction with wet or oily hands. The bottom of the grip is slightly extended and beveled to form a magazine well funnel to assist with reloads. The P227 is equipped with a standard M1913 Picatinny Rail for your accessorizing needs.

There is not a substantial difference between the grip size of the P226 and the P227. If you were to simply glance at the E2 grips of the two pistols, it would be tough to tell the difference. In hand, the P227 feels slightly larger, but not uncomfortably so.

The Nitron model is equipped with Sig’s standard Double Action/Single Action (DA/SA). The SAS Gen 2 model sports the DA/SA with a short-reset trigger (SRT), which reduces trigger reset travel by about 50%. An SRT conversion kit is available to install on Nitron models.

Out of the box, I found the 227’s trigger not as smooth as I had expected. Granted, the other Sigs I own have 3000+ rounds, and countless dry fire trigger presses in their history, and I would expect the P227’s trigger to smooth out comparatively after a break-in period.  After about 100 Double-Action dry-fire presses of the trigger, it had smoothed out a bit. Factory rated double action trigger pull is 10 lbs., with 4.4 lbs in single-action.

The P227’s slide is identical to that of the P220. In fact, you can put a P220 slide on the P227 frame. This is particularly good news for those who own P220 long slide models, or who have P220’s with sight/barrel configurations not yet offered for the P227.

The magazines shipped with the P227 are 10 round capacity, and are basically a P250 magazine with a different floor plate. The P227 magazine floor plate insert (the part inside the magazine that attaches to the bottom of the spring, and rests against the floor plate) is slightly extended, and allows only 10 rounds to be inserted into the magazine. Replacing the P227 floor plate insert with a P229 floor plate insert will allow 11 rounds to be loaded into the magazine. I did not experience any malfunctions during testing with this configuration, however I would not recommend it for self-defense or duty carry simply because it is not a factory-approved modification. Sig will be releasing an extended 14-round magazine for the P227 in the near future.

I put about 300 rounds of various factory loaded .45 ACP (FMJ, Frangible, Jacketed Hollow-point, Bonded Hollow-point) through the P227 without any malfunctions. The pistol is nicely balanced and the recoil of the .45 ACP is easily manageable. It had been a while since I fired a Sig with the standard length trigger reset, and it’s tough to go back after firing a Sig with the SRT. After my first day at the range with the P227, I placed an order for the SRT conversion kit.

I don’t have a mechanical rest for accuracy testing, but reports of 1-3 inch groups at 25 yards with various grades of ammunition are out there on the web. Bottom line: The pistol is capable of far better accuracy than the average shooter’s skill level, and is most certainly adequate for self-defense or duty carry.

Overall, if you’re looking for an ergonomic, high capacity .45 ACP, take a look at the P227. It’s sure to be a hit with Sig Sauer fans and .45 ACP shooters alike. With an MSRP of around a grand, it’s not the most affordable double stack .45 out there, but with Sig Sauer, you generally get what you pay for.

CZ-82 Pistol Review

The CZ-82 is a compact pistol chambered in 9mm Makarov, or 9x18mm. It was designed for the Czechoslovakian military when the Soviet Union standardized to the 9x18mm round. The pistol is a double action/single action design, meaning that the first shot is a heavy double action and each subsequent shot is a short single action pull. It holds a 12 round magazine and has an ambidextrous magazine release and safety. The slide release is on the left side of the frame. I prefer my carry pistols not have a safety, so I carry it with a round in the chamber and the hammer down. In this condition, the safety cannot be activated, so I don’t worry about the safety being inadvertently activated. There is an internal hammer block that does not allow the hammer to strike the firing pin, unless the trigger is pulled. The sights on the pistol were no longer filled with the original red paint, but I was able to swap them to tritium sights designed for the CZ-75.  My pistol was made in 1987 and showed very apparent wear from carry.  It 

was very well broken in and the trigger was smooth as silk. The barrel has polygonal rifling, which aids in accuracy. One thing to note on the rifling is that it will look smooth, but if you look closely, you will see there is rifling. This is the way they are made, so don’t worry. I am able to shoot very nice groups with this pistol. My only complaint of this pistol would be that when using a "thumbs forward" grip, there isn't really much for my left thumb to rest on, so it tends to rub the slide. This causes enough drag that the pistol will sometimes not fully cycle, and leave a spent case in the chamber. With a conscious effort to correct my grip, I have never had a malfunction. The way I remedy this is to curl my thumbs together. CZ also offers their Model 83, which is a newly made version available in .380 ACP and .32 ACP. On a final note, if you are ever in dire need, you can use the pistol as a bottle opener by locking the slide back and hooking the dust cover under the cap!

Crosman Game Face GF1911G Airsoft Pistol

Before I get started I have to mention that the orange tip on this pistol was shot out of the barrel.  It does come with the orange tip from the factory.  I think it may have gotten bumped and knocked out of alignment though.  All testing was done without the orange tip in place.

My first impression of this pistol really created a deeper desire to keep shooting it! The thing that really stands out is that the weight is so comparable to a real 1911, coming in at 33.6 oz.  The grip safety depresses but is non-functional.  The hammer falls but does not stay in battery.  There is a thumb safety that is strictly for aesthetics and does not move at all.  I mention this because it seems weird that these features are non-functional but for the purpose of an airsoft pistol I think it would really drive the price up if all of these components were functional.  They feel real. And for training purposes this would come in very handy, at least for pulling the trigger.  Having a non-functional thumb safety that doesn't move would, however, not be the best option for training to draw and fire your 1911 if you carry one on a regular basis. So there is that to think about.  The actual safety on the pistol is on the right side above the trigger and is easily toggled forward and backward with your index finger.

As far as the slide release goes, it functions like normal. With this pistol the slide release engages when the magazine is in place and you pull the slide back.  It has fixed black sights but it's rare that the pistol shoots a BB that doesn't curve so I can't tell if the sights are good or not.  Whether it was a full CO2 cartridge or a half empty one, it didn't seem to affect the consistency of the shots.  One BB would curve to the left then the next would curve to the right.  I know this is typical but they seemed like they were going off target a little more than they should have been.

The magazine is kind of heavy since it's metal but does allow for a fast release when the magazine release is pushed.  The magazine is a slim, and holds 15 rounds.  It fits compactly into the grip along with the CO2 cartridge and the hex head set screw tool for tightening and loosening the CO2 cartridge. To remove/replace the CO2 cartridge you release the magazine, pop the grip plate off, let the hex head fall out (which is held in place tandemly with the grip plate and magazine when in place), and then simply loosen or tighten the set screw. Simple.  It's nice that it all fits right into the grip.

One of the other things I really like about it is that the slide blows back on every shot, simulating a slight degree of recoil.  Very slight.  However, one thing I don't like is how much the slide rattles around.  The slide itself is fairly light and the tolerances are less than satisfactory.  If you give the pistol a shake, it's actually quite loud.  The good thing is that this does not affect accuracy and does not indicate one way or the other how well built the pistol is.  The entire pistol, with exception to the slide tolerances, is durable and sturdy.

I thoroughly enjoyed shooting the GF1911G. I would recommend this to ANYONE looking for an affordable and realistic way to have fun shooting, save some money on ammo, and train.

Sig Sauer – SP2022

 

Last year about this time I found myself in the market for a new pistol. I knew I wanted a polymer framed handgun that was accurate and reliable, to use more as a range toy but could also be a carry gun if it had to.  I really found myself drawn to the Springfield Armory XDM and had decided to place an order.  That is until one day I was in my local gun shop and the sales guy behind the counter handed 

me a Sig Sauer SP 2022.  Instantly there was just something about that gun!  It was so comfortable.  It was like the grip just melted into my hand.  Later that month, Black Friday rolled around. The Sig SP 2022 was marked down a hundred bucks and I took one home. I’ve been carrying it for about a year now and I’m just as happy with my purchase now as I was then.  People may ask, “Tiny, what’s so great about a fifteen year old design?”  Well I’m so glad you asked!

In 1998, Sig Sauer released their first polymer frame pistol in 40 S&W and 357 Sig.  Then a year later, they released it in 9mm.  For the time, the Sig Pro series handgun was a pretty nifty design with interchangeable grips and an accessory rail.  However, the polymer framed hand guns had not yet been embraced by the market.  The Sig Pro soon became known as the poor man’s P226.  However a few years later, polymer became the industry standard.  In 2002, Sig redesigned the Sig Pro for French law enforcement and rereleased it as the Sig SP2022 with a service life in mind of twenty years (hence the designation 2022).  The pistol is very similar to the Sig P226.  It uses the classic DA/SA trigger that Sig is known for with no manual safety.  Instead, the gun features a decoking lever in its place and Sig’s four point safety system.  It has a 3.9 inch barrel with an overall length of 7.4 inches.  Its 5.7 inches tall, 1.3 inches wide and weighs 29 ounces unloaded.  Some say it’s a little chunky for IWB carry but if the French can do it, it can’t be that bad!  It shoots great!  The double action trigger pull is 10 pounds and even though that sounds heavy, it’s very smooth!  With a little practice, you won’t have any trouble holding your sights on target.  The single action trigger pull is 4.5 pounds which in my opinion is ideal.  The reset is a little long but it’s not really a problem unless you’re Jerry Miculek.  Still, high level competition shooters may opt for a shorter reset trigger on their match pistols.

Now you may be asking, “gee whiz, are there any reasons I shouldn’t get one?”  My answer is not many.  There’s not a ton of aftermarket accessories and most of them are from Sig Sauer themselves.  To they’re credit they haven’t abandoned it.  You can buy different size grips and switch between 40 S&W and 357 Sig with conversions available.  Unfortunately there are no conversions for 9mm and neither is there a 22 conversion for plinking on the cheap.  Also, while there are holsters out there to be had, you may not have your choice manufacturer.  Furthermore, while the sandpaper like grip is great for IDPA, I would recommend an undershirt if you’re carrying IWB because it will eat into your side like a bull shark!  That, or order the large grip from Sig.  It has rubber inserts that are real comfortable, but if anybody from Sig is reading this, we really need a medium or small size grip with the rubber inserts.  Magazines are relatively easy to find. The 40 S&W and 357 Sig have a capacity of 12 while the 9mm is 15.  Mec Gar also makes 17 round magazines for the 9mm.  There are rumors that Sig is coming out with a 20 round factory magazine for the 9mm chambering, but I wouldn’t hold my breath till I see one.

Still all things considered, this is a great pistol for the money!  Take down of the pistol is done with one pin that doubles as the slide release leaver.  That makes for easy cleaning and reassembly. Accurate and reliable, I’ve never had a single malfunction.  Supposedly, the French police tested the pistol with over 400,000 rounds without having a malfunction!  I doubt many shooters will fire that many rounds through a single handgun.  If you looking for Sig Sauer quality but don’t have a thousand dollars to spend to get it, look no further than the Sig SP 2022.  Give it a shot; you’ll be glad you did!

Sig Sauer M11-A1

I’ve had a love affair with Sig Sauer P228 since I first saw it in the Clint Eastwood Secret Service action thriller In the Line of Fire. The compact P226 has been used in Hollywood hits like, the X-Files, The Sentinel, NCIS, and NCIS – LA. It’s mostly portrayed as the quintessential good guy Fed gun that only fed my desire.

When Sig Sauer announced in 2012 it was producing a new set of P228s, naming it the M11 A-1 and intentionally hyping it’s military pedigree; it garnered interest from me and other Sig admirers old and new. When technical specifications of the M11 A-1 were made public, the numbers indicated that the 2012 reissue of the M11-A-1 were merely P229s with P228 pressed into the handgrips.

Despite sharing the M11, military designation, the M11 A-1 shares more with the P229 than the Military/LEO issued M11/P228. Instead of a stamped steel slide, the M11 A-1 shares the milled stainless steel slide of the P229. The M11A-1/P229 weighs in at 32 oz., a whole ounce more than the P228.

Both weapons are the same height but the M11 A-1 is slightly thicker being built off of the P229 frame. P228 magazines are interchangeable with M11-A1 despite the M11-A1 shipping with P229-1 Magazines. P229-1 magazines will not work in the P228.

All the Sig controls are where you expect them to be. The M11-A1 has a UID sticker which is more of a marketing gimmick than utilitarian.

The Key difference on the right side of the firearm includes the long extractor on the M11 A-1. Although the long extractor garners lots of bad Internet press, I experienced zero issues after putting 300 rounds through the barrel with all rounds feeding and extract properly.

The short reach trigger/thin trigger is a deviation from the P228’s standard trigger, which is a welcome addition to my Medium-large hands. It felt very comfortable with every trigger pull, but I do miss the trigger ridges from the P228.

SIGLITE® Night Sights are standard on the M11 A-1 (left) and a bright and sharp compared to the same SIGLITE® Night Sights on the older P228. Understandable since the tritium inserts which dim after time.

A unique feature of the M11-A1 is the laser etched SIG insignia on the top of the slide. Personally I don’t think it adds or detracts to the design.

I really wanted to dislike the M11-A1 and treat it like the bastard child of the much beloved P228, but I really LOVE it.  I hate to say it but I feel it balances better than the P228 in my hand. I shoot it more accurately than the P228. I’m afraid to say it, but the M11-A1 is better than my P228.

The M11-A1 is a great value that includes features such as a Short Reset Trigger, night sights, chrome lined barrel, phosphate coated internals, and three magazines for a price similar to others in the P229.

Smart Firearms SF3

One of the most dangerous things new and experienced shooters do, is draw their handgun from a holster and fire it at a target in a quick fashion.  Websites like YouTube are full of videos of beginners and experts shooting themselves during the holster draw and/or return process.  No matter how many times someone hears, “leave your finger off the trigger until ready to shoot”, it always seems to happen.  It's nearly impossible to critique yourself during the holstering process to be sure it never happens.  In the same fashion, unless someone is given the opportunity to train in a one-on-one environment, it is nearly impossible for an instructor to catch incidents of fingers being placed on the trigger before someone is ready to fire.

In walks the Smart Firearms SF3 training firearm.  The SF3 is a training device that gives near-immediate feedback to users who place their trigger finger on the trigger before they are ready to shoot.  When a user places their finger within the trigger guard and doesn't pull the trigger to shoot within about 3/4 of a second, the SF3 sounds a fairly loud alarm to notify the user and any instructors in the area that a violation has occurred.  The SF3 is also smart enough to wait a few fractions of a second before sounding an alarm.  This allows users to pull the trigger and “engage” their target without the alarm sounding.  When the user pulls the trigger, a “bang” sound is emitted from the device.  As with a real handgun, users are given two options of what to do when they draw their weapons: 1. Keep their finger indexed on the frame of the handgun, or 2. place their finger on the trigger and pull it to simulate firing the handgun.

 The SF3 mimics the shape and weight of a loaded Glock and fits holsters designed for the same.  I first tested the SF3 in a Safariland duty holster and the SF3 performed as designed.  I then tested the SF3 in a Galco leather concealed carry-type holster designed for concealment.  Within this holster the SF3 alarmed as if something within the holster was tripping the trigger guard sensor.  I retested the SF3 in a kydex concealment holster as well and it had the same problem alarming itself within the holster.  I attribute the false alarms to either an overly sensitive sensor, or the sensor design itself.  With the current design, even the slightest encroachment of anything (i.e. clothing, holster etc.) into the trigger guard seems to set it off.

 Overall I really like the concept of the SF3 as a training device for firearms instructors and law enforcement trainers to use in their classes.  Given the problems I had with the sensor, holster selection for the SF3 is likely key to make it operate as designed.  I’d like to see a redesign of the sensor in which it only alarms when something passes the midway point within the trigger guard, which would reduce incidents of accidental alarms.  I’d also like to see a removable magazine and a slide capable of manipulation so users could practice reloading drills too.  In addition to this, as nitpicky as it may sounds, I’d also like to see a more realistic trigger pull and trigger reset.  This may seem minor, but the more realistic a training tool performs, the more likely users are to fall back on their training with the device.  Another neat feature built into the device is the ability to turn off the sensor and use the gun strictly for dry fire practice. This is yet another reason why a more realistic trigger pull and reset is important.

 UPDATE: I spoke with the president of Smart Firearms (Mike Farrell) regarding the issues I had with the sensitivity of the sensor in concealment holsters.  Mike was extremely open and honest regarding the challenges they face with concealable holsters and their SF3.  Mike stated their target market at the present time was uniformed law enforcement officers and their training departments.  Typically these officers use holsters that have internal parts which don’t encroach within the trigger guard for retention.  This is why the sensor is designed the way it is.  There seems to be a compromise between sensor sensitivity and accurate performance.  Mike mentioned a multitude of variables that can affect the sensor from finger size to skin tone.  There is a fine line between dialing down sensitivity to reduce alarms in concealment holsters, and dialing it down too much which could miss actual trigger guard intrusions by users.

In the end, Mike admits that concealment holsters don’t work well with the SF3.   Which I can’t fault them for because their target market is presently uniformed law enforcement officers.  He indicated that Smart Firearms was in the process of redesigning certain attributes of the SF3 to make it more compatible with concealment holsters and non-LE users.  I’ll definitely keep my eye out for these redesigns because the potential target market of non-LE shooters has a lot to gain from a device like the SF3.  The training this device can reinforce is too good to limit to the LE community!

Comp-Tac Minotaur MTAC Holster

 Out of the box, this holster was just a little too tight for my liking.  However Comp-Tac provides you with a wrench that will allow you to adjust the holster to your preference. Within a couple of minutes I was able to adjust the tension, cant and depth just the way I prefer.  Ever since the adjustment, the holster has been riding in the same exact spot.  The retention on this holster is very good, yet it allows the gun to be drawn easy enough.  I personally find this holster to be extremely comfortable and strangely enough, it seems to make the gun feel lighter.  The kydex shell is replaceable, this allows you to keep your holster and you only need to buy a new piece if you buy a new gun.  One nice thing I noticed about this holster is this, you can tuck a shirt into your pants and the only thing that is noticeable are the two clips. With some of the other offered clips available,  the gun would be even less noticeable.  Overall, I would definitely recommend this holster.
