Pelican 1200 Case

Pelican 1200 Case

Sure enough after buying a full size Pelican gun case, I was convinced I needed to acquire the smaller sized cases the rest of my gear. The Pelican 1200 case is part of their small case line, and it's the perfect size for a single handgun, camera, or if you're me, a chronograph for those trips to the range. Like it's big brothers, the 1200 has the same super rugged copolymer polypropylene shell, open cell foam core and solid wall construction which makes it stronger and lighter that the competition. It's tough to find cases this small that also are deep enough to fit beefier items like cameras, lenses, batteries, and firearms accessories.

Pelican Case

Available in several colors, I picked up a Pelican 1200 case in tan, since it's all the rage in the gun world still. The nicest feature of the 1200 is the pluck 'n pull foam layer inside. Instead of tracing and cutting out relief for your gear, you just pry strips of foam out until your desired fit/shape is achieved. I recommend having a pen knife of other slim blade at hand to help initiate separation of foam, especially on corners. Obviously whatever shape you make will be somewhat squared due to the precut grid, but it's really great to be able to chose your own layout for items. While many reviews complain the foam is too thick and makes retrieving certain items from the bottom problematic, you can easily plan ahead by removing the foam in as big a piece as possible, then cutting that chunk in half (or thirds, or whichever) and reinserting into place for a shallower compartment.

Pelican 1200 Case

As mentioned earlier, I purposed this 1200 to fit my F1 Shooting Chronograph. Even with a lowly $100 price tag, I wanted to protect the Chrony as best as I could, since I go through such great lengths to not ventilate it at the range. The fit was perfect, and the rods just barely fit within the case's interior width (had to complete remove foam on the sides of the slot, the fit was literally just right). The batteries fit ontop of the rods, retaining them from falling out if the case is opened in a bad angle. The diffusors also conveniently fit under the main unit (the flat segments) and the 4 side segments fit lay flat on top of the foam.

Pelican 1200 Case

Like my previous review on the 1750 case, the 1200 case can be thrown in the trunk and taken on bumpy roads, or surviving the trials known as TSA luggage handlers. Dang near indestructible and keeps your expensive stuff from banging around or drowning in the drink, the Pelican 1200 will easily outlast other cheaper cases out there. Just beware, their almost like potato chips... just one is never enough!

"I bought this to replace the plastic case that came with my Beretta PX4 Storm 9mm, type F (full size). It fits the pistol along with the factory supplied spare magazine, and there's room for another spare magazine if you want to fit it in. This case allows the use of a small pad lock, which I prefer over the cable lock that came with the pistol. The shooting range I go to requires that your firearms to be cased AND locked when you're in their store area signing in, and this case works well for this purpose. I deducted 1 star for the pluck and choose foam. While they are fairly easy to pluck out to create the shape necessary to fit the pistol, I wish they've made the foam so that you can pluck it out at half-height only." Amazon User Review

Pelican 1750 Long Case

Pelican Case

There is one name than stands out in the gun storage market, to whom all other cases are compared against. That would be Pelican, and the cases they produce certainly earn the philosophy "Buy Once, Cry Once."  While near the top of the budget range, the Pelican Protector Series of gun cases are extremely durable. Often used in the military as well as international hunters traveling abroad for dangerous game, Pelican cases are depended on and deliver everything they promise to offer. Many gun owners will stray to cheaper budget cases, but the best way to protect your investment is investing in better protection and you would be hard pressed to find a more protective case than a Pelican.

Pelican Case

I picked up a Pelican 1750 long case in OD green, knowing I would have to either remove the center foam insert or custom cut it to the shape of my desired firearm and accessories. I really enjoyed this aspect, as it let me have complete control on the degree of fit and shape of the cuts and how many accessories I can carry with my rifle. The process for measuring and cutting the holes for your gear can be easy and painless or shotty and grueling, depending on your aptitude and patience. While many How-To sources say to trace an outline of your gear with chalk or a marker, I chose to take an extra step for better precision and a better fit overall. Lay down masking tape or painters tape first, and that will prevent leaving marks or residue on the foam and also is necessary for the next steps. Trace the items using a marker or pen on the tape, but then you will take a razor or Exacto blade and cut the tape about 1/16" to 1/8" inside of your traced outline. This will give you a tighter fit to your items, as you are left with a tape edge to follow with your cutting device. You only need to cut deep enough to remove the tape, cut too deep and you will leave cuts in the foam you don't want - this is also a great reason for tracing everything backwards on the reverse side of the foam.

Pelican Case

Many folks suggest using an electric knife (often used on thanksgiving) however I chose to use a jigsaw. Not only does the jigsaw automatically give your a level to keep the cuts perpendicular, but the thinner blade facilitates sharper corners. Make sure you find a blade that is long enough to trim the foam fully, 2 inches is a safe length. The most important thing to remember when cutting is to slow down and control the pace. The saw wants to pull forward, so without a firm controlled hand mistakes are abound. After trimming and checking for fit and before you discard the unwanted foam parts, flip the foam upside down and press the inner foam parts out a bit. This keeps the structure while you can spray an adhesive on the back, then insert into your case. Let dry, and then remove and discard the foam cutouts. The glue is optional, but a tighter fit means pulling the items out will pull out the foam too. Then again, if you want it somewhat more universal for multiple rifles, you can trace / cut it that way. Many 1750 owners carry two AR15 types rifles in one case, with cutouts for mags and accessories. Gotta love the options!

Pelican Case

One more note, close your case on all your gear, then open back up after a few minutes. If you have any protruding items they will leave an indentation in the foam of the lid.  Your windage adjustment turret, for instance. I went ahead and trimmed a circle out in the top for the turret, you could also do this on the bottom foam lining if you have a turret for parallax adjustment. If you have a mounted bipod, you may want to cut a bigger area for clearance as Atlas, Harris, Caldwell, and other bipods have different profiles. After a couple hours, the 1750 was custom fit for my Remington 700 SA 20", with room for a suppressor as well as mags, rangefinder, removed bolt, and everything else. With a little modification, I was able to fit a second R700 Long Action with 26" barrel and similar scope!

Pelican Case

Pelican cases are the epitome of protection for your firearms. Watertight and dustproof o-rings, crushproof shell and hinges, and double throw latches that are easy to open / close but tough. The padlock points are also steel reinforced (for travel use one TSA combo lock and key lock, don't make it easy for 'em!) and while the case itself is a whopping 25.5 lbs empty, its polyurethane wheels and robust handles make it possible to carry short distances. This is not a case you want to carry for long periods of time, especially if you have it packed with heavy rifles, optics, or multiple firearms.

Pelican Case

These cases shine for throwing in the truck on bumpy roads or surviving the TSA luggage monkeys who are notorious for carelessly chucking or dropping expensive looking cases. The three layers of foam and durable construction helps keep your rifle zeroed and makes it less easy to brake into and rip you off. They aren't indestructible or theft-proof by any means, but their strength will endure what would easily scrap other cheaper cases out there, and if burglarizing takes minutes instead of seconds then it's somewhat more reassuring. Bottom line is, you will buy more cheaper cases over and over after wear and tear long before you buy a replacement Pelican case... that is unless you are looking for additional Pelican to suit other needs!

What others are saying?: "I have two of these 1750s Bought one for a 338LPM rifle. I did not want to pay the Pelican prices for some shorter rifles, so I tried a bunch of other brands. I ended up buying another Pelican 1750. The other brands work okay for 1/2 the price, but they do not compare in sturdiness or in the latch functionality. I also like the fact that Pelican does not use pluck-out foam, which always looks terrible. Pelican's foam is solid, and you can use a special reciprocating saw blade (Festool S155/W)made for foam to make a perfect custom rifle cut-out (And bolt cut-out, Mag cut-out, tool cut-outs, etc.) " Midway User Review

"A lot of people don't think that you need to spend this kind of money on a case, but take it from me it matters! I've been shooting competitively for years now and nothing is worse than buying a cheap case and having to completely reset your optics after a flight. Spend the money upfront or waste time afterwards just getting back to square one. This is my third pelican case so now I don't have to switch out the inserts when I bring different setups. But switching the foam inserts is a way to save a little money if you want. Also if your looking for a double firearm case for an AR-15 style weapons system you can usually do it with this case. Although if you are going to try and put two 20" barrel AR-15 it's going to be really tight. Also be careful cutting the foam make sure you have the layout exactly how you want it before you start cutting or you can end up with a real mess!" Amazon User Review

Cons:

MidwayUSA Competition Range Bag

rangebag5.jpg

I was searching for a good range bag a while back, as my old duffle bag had given up on me. So, I went searching the web for something that would meet my criteria. What I found was the MidwayUSA Competition Range bag. During my search, I ran into a number of range bags, but most if them were too small for my taste. The Midway bag had almost everything I wanted. It is very large, which allows me to keep all my range goodies in one spot. It comes with a removable padded carrying strap. It has lots of different zippered compartments, 8 of different sizes plus 1 main compartment. Some of the larger ones even contain pockets inside of them. In the large side pocket, there are holders for 8 pistol magazines and 12 elastic holders for pens, cleaning rods, etc. Now, for the really good stuff. Inside the vast main double zippered compartment is a handled carry bag, which has its own zippered storage and padded hook & loop separators. You can use this handy little bag for ammo and supplies. It, basically, gives you the ability to leave the heavy bag in your vehicle and just carry what you really need for the shooting session. I use this little bag for carrying ammo and magazines at matches where I have to go from stage to stage. The other nice feature about the range bag is that it comes with a matching bag to put brass in. It also comes with 2 padded pistol pouches. These pouches are quite large, also, and can fit full size handguns without any problems.

The only thing I don't like about the pistol rugs is that they are fairly flimsy and not padded enough.  The zippers are double stitched, and some of them have a round zipper pull to aid in using them. Overall, I am very pleased with this range bag. It stores all of my range goodies, plus an extra kitchen sink.

Concealed Carrie Leather Compact Carrie Review

Concealed Carrie Leather Compact Carrie

Concealed Carry is such a beautiful concept. The market for vessels to carry a concealed handgun is exploding as more manufacturers expand their product line, offering an equal opportunity for both men and women to get quality products that fit their lifestyle.  Concealment products are usually unisex, with holsters typically designed for either men or women.  When it comes to outside the body / external carry, there is a rapidly growing market for purses, totes, and handbags designed for concealed carry.  In fact I would no longer considered them niché as how popular pocket sized pistols have become, and how many bag crafters have started incorporated 'concealed pockets' into their products. While some prefer the security of having a pistol holstered on their body, there are times when a female might be unable to conceal on her body as the dress for the occasion may make it impossible.

To clear the air right off the start, yes I have an X and Y chromosome and I am reviewing a product with a female target demographic. It shouldn't matter as being objective and having experience as a concealed carrier should be all the qualification I need. I did however get plenty of perspective and help from my partner, who also carries and knows a thing or two about purses!

Compact Carrie

Concealed Carrie (best brand name ever!) specializes in purses, totes, handbags, and clutches that allow for secure and conceal carry of a compact or subcompact firearms. Their "Compact Carrie" is a compact clutch that has two compartments, one for a firearms mounted with included velcro holster, and the other for your cash, phone, ID and other necessities. The quality of materials of the Compact Carrie are really high, the leather is bright red and the stitching is very well done. It comes with a tassel zipper pull and a keychain as well as a leather wrist strap, which you can choose to use or remove with simple clasps. My partner gave it a thorough look over and found it had plenty of organizing pockets for what she typically has in her standard pocketbook.

2014-08-05 12-55-10 -0700

As for the firearm carrying capability we found that with both our compact sized carry pistols (a Glock 26 and M&Pc) the Concealed Carrie Leather Compact Carrie had some extra added bulging. The Glock 26 in the included holster seems to cause printing, which was somewhat noticeable from a close distance that there was something large and heavy in the bag. While it's not enough to prevent the zippers from closing, it was something we both picked up on right away. However if your compact pistol of choice is a single stack with a slimmer profile, say a S&W Shield, Glock 42, Ruger LCP, etc. it will stow in the Compact much easier. Weight also becomes a bit of concern, as a fully loaded 10+1 gunplus another loaded magazine makes the Compact feel hefty to carry via the wrist strap or in the bare hand, and we both agreed stepping up to a purse or tote from Concealed Carrie would be to way to go if your carry gun is anything wider than a subcompact, .85" slide width model.

If you are looking for a stylish way to conceal your pistol on the go, I would say Concealed Carrie is the best way to go, both for the value and craftsmanship you really will be impressed (and more importantly, so will she)

Blackhawk Sportster Shotgun Case 2

In a market that is flooded with so many different shotgun case makers, it can get a bit overwhelming when trying to choose one that will (a) protect your shotgun and (b) last you a long time.  For me, the Blackhawk Sportster Shotgun Case met those 2 requirements.  The foam and fabric inside the case is both plush and soft which is a home-run when protecting the finish of your shotgun.  The exterior of the case is made of abrasion and mildew resistant 600 denier polyester which is paired with heavy-duty YKK zippers.  The combination of the 2 makes an exterior that is durable and built to last you long time. Last but not least, I love how the case opens completely flat.  This makes a great surface for you to clean your shotgun on at the end of the day.
