Vehicle Storage

Pelican 1750 Long Case

Pelican Case

There is one name than stands out in the gun storage market, to whom all other cases are compared against. That would be Pelican, and the cases they produce certainly earn the philosophy "Buy Once, Cry Once."  While near the top of the budget range, the Pelican Protector Series of gun cases are extremely durable. Often used in the military as well as international hunters traveling abroad for dangerous game, Pelican cases are depended on and deliver everything they promise to offer. Many gun owners will stray to cheaper budget cases, but the best way to protect your investment is investing in better protection and you would be hard pressed to find a more protective case than a Pelican.

Pelican Case

I picked up a Pelican 1750 long case in OD green, knowing I would have to either remove the center foam insert or custom cut it to the shape of my desired firearm and accessories. I really enjoyed this aspect, as it let me have complete control on the degree of fit and shape of the cuts and how many accessories I can carry with my rifle. The process for measuring and cutting the holes for your gear can be easy and painless or shotty and grueling, depending on your aptitude and patience. While many How-To sources say to trace an outline of your gear with chalk or a marker, I chose to take an extra step for better precision and a better fit overall. Lay down masking tape or painters tape first, and that will prevent leaving marks or residue on the foam and also is necessary for the next steps. Trace the items using a marker or pen on the tape, but then you will take a razor or Exacto blade and cut the tape about 1/16" to 1/8" inside of your traced outline. This will give you a tighter fit to your items, as you are left with a tape edge to follow with your cutting device. You only need to cut deep enough to remove the tape, cut too deep and you will leave cuts in the foam you don't want - this is also a great reason for tracing everything backwards on the reverse side of the foam.

Pelican Case

Many folks suggest using an electric knife (often used on thanksgiving) however I chose to use a jigsaw. Not only does the jigsaw automatically give your a level to keep the cuts perpendicular, but the thinner blade facilitates sharper corners. Make sure you find a blade that is long enough to trim the foam fully, 2 inches is a safe length. The most important thing to remember when cutting is to slow down and control the pace. The saw wants to pull forward, so without a firm controlled hand mistakes are abound. After trimming and checking for fit and before you discard the unwanted foam parts, flip the foam upside down and press the inner foam parts out a bit. This keeps the structure while you can spray an adhesive on the back, then insert into your case. Let dry, and then remove and discard the foam cutouts. The glue is optional, but a tighter fit means pulling the items out will pull out the foam too. Then again, if you want it somewhat more universal for multiple rifles, you can trace / cut it that way. Many 1750 owners carry two AR15 types rifles in one case, with cutouts for mags and accessories. Gotta love the options!

Pelican Case

One more note, close your case on all your gear, then open back up after a few minutes. If you have any protruding items they will leave an indentation in the foam of the lid.  Your windage adjustment turret, for instance. I went ahead and trimmed a circle out in the top for the turret, you could also do this on the bottom foam lining if you have a turret for parallax adjustment. If you have a mounted bipod, you may want to cut a bigger area for clearance as Atlas, Harris, Caldwell, and other bipods have different profiles. After a couple hours, the 1750 was custom fit for my Remington 700 SA 20", with room for a suppressor as well as mags, rangefinder, removed bolt, and everything else. With a little modification, I was able to fit a second R700 Long Action with 26" barrel and similar scope!

Pelican Case

Pelican cases are the epitome of protection for your firearms. Watertight and dustproof o-rings, crushproof shell and hinges, and double throw latches that are easy to open / close but tough. The padlock points are also steel reinforced (for travel use one TSA combo lock and key lock, don't make it easy for 'em!) and while the case itself is a whopping 25.5 lbs empty, its polyurethane wheels and robust handles make it possible to carry short distances. This is not a case you want to carry for long periods of time, especially if you have it packed with heavy rifles, optics, or multiple firearms.

Pelican Case

These cases shine for throwing in the truck on bumpy roads or surviving the TSA luggage monkeys who are notorious for carelessly chucking or dropping expensive looking cases. The three layers of foam and durable construction helps keep your rifle zeroed and makes it less easy to brake into and rip you off. They aren't indestructible or theft-proof by any means, but their strength will endure what would easily scrap other cheaper cases out there, and if burglarizing takes minutes instead of seconds then it's somewhat more reassuring. Bottom line is, you will buy more cheaper cases over and over after wear and tear long before you buy a replacement Pelican case... that is unless you are looking for additional Pelican to suit other needs!

What others are saying?: "I have two of these 1750s Bought one for a 338LPM rifle. I did not want to pay the Pelican prices for some shorter rifles, so I tried a bunch of other brands. I ended up buying another Pelican 1750. The other brands work okay for 1/2 the price, but they do not compare in sturdiness or in the latch functionality. I also like the fact that Pelican does not use pluck-out foam, which always looks terrible. Pelican's foam is solid, and you can use a special reciprocating saw blade (Festool S155/W)made for foam to make a perfect custom rifle cut-out (And bolt cut-out, Mag cut-out, tool cut-outs, etc.) " Midway User Review

"A lot of people don't think that you need to spend this kind of money on a case, but take it from me it matters! I've been shooting competitively for years now and nothing is worse than buying a cheap case and having to completely reset your optics after a flight. Spend the money upfront or waste time afterwards just getting back to square one. This is my third pelican case so now I don't have to switch out the inserts when I bring different setups. But switching the foam inserts is a way to save a little money if you want. Also if your looking for a double firearm case for an AR-15 style weapons system you can usually do it with this case. Although if you are going to try and put two 20" barrel AR-15 it's going to be really tight. Also be careful cutting the foam make sure you have the layout exactly how you want it before you start cutting or you can end up with a real mess!" Amazon User Review

Our Rating:

Pros:

  • Foam is denser than most other cases and is easier to cut / more supportive
  • Dual steel reinforced padlock points
  • Shell has raised ridges surrounding a perfect area for stenciling / labeling
  • Latches are easy to use and secure (won't pop open under pressure)

Cons:

  • Bulky and heavy UNLOADED -- 25.5 lbs!
  • No instructions for cutting foam. Pelican would make a killing if they sold predesigned template kits to follow with a jigsaw or electric knife.

Score: 9.0 Amazing

SnapSafe LockBox XL

SnapSafe Lockbox XL

Secure handgun storage is a crucial factor in preventing accidental shootings and stolen firearms. Many gun owners might not have the space or funds for a expensive full size safe, or are more mobile and spend more time in their vehicle or hotel rooms than at home. A portable safe small enough to stow beneath a car seat or on a nightstand that can stand up to abuse or burglary attempts is exactly whats needed.

SnapSafe Lockbox XL

While there are many inexpensive handgun lock boxes on the market, they often only come in one size, which may be too size of a fit for your pistol, magazines, or other belongings you wish to secure. Owners of larger handguns like revolvers or full size 1911s may find some of the aforementioned boxes to be too cozy to their liking. There is also the slight inconvenience of one key per lockbox, so utilizing a box tethered to a carseat and another to the bedpost means two sets of keys and twice the time it takes to recover your items when you need them the most, in a hurry.

SnapSafe Lockbox XL

SnapSafe not only provides an XL size lock box, but also a set of two that are keyed alike. This allows for a husband/wife set for example, or keeping a lockbox in the car and the home, or one at the office. The Lockbox XL is a very simple yet strong design. The internal dimensions are 9.5 inches by 6.5 inches, and affords room for a full size 1911, a compact handgun, or even two subcompacts. The sides are reinforced with steel that overlaps the seam when closed, acting as an anti prying feature. The steel cable included can be looped into a lasso for securing to a solid object, or padlocked to itself. The lockbox has a porthole cut in it's left edge to accomodate the cable.

SnapSafe Lockbox XL

The SnapSafe Lockbox XL is a great option for conceal carriers who need to lockup their firearm, especially if traveling through a state that requires such provisions. I tried out multiple firearms in different configurations inside the Lockbox, and was please with most of the fit except for thinner frame single stack firearms like the Shield or G42 will slide around and bang the walls because of the thin lining. While I'd like to see thicker foam inside and a better way to attach the cable, the hinges and overall construction are pretty solid. When there's an option that costs less than a box of ammunition and keeps your firearms from falling into the wrong hands, there's no excuse to not have one.

What others are saying?: "I like the steel construction. For the price the construction is decent. Only thing I would change is either thicker foam, my 1911 sits okay but if the foam was 1/4 of an inch thicker on both sides it would sit nice and snug without moving the gun if dropped. As it is if the case is dropped or shaken a gun placed inside would hit the bare steel sides of the inside. " Amazon User Review

"This XL safe is awesome. It's big, much bigger than the competitors. I'm able to put two large guns along with the clips and ammo into one box, yet thin enough to slide under my night stand. The safe is constructed very strong and the cable allows me to attach it to anything so it can't be moved. This is yet another great addition to the SnapSafe line of products. Defiantly going to be getting some for my friends and family." Amazon User Review

Firing Line Review

Crossbreed Ohai Modular Holster Review

Crossbreed Ohai Modular Holster If you plan on concealed carrying your firearms via external carry, that is in a messenger bag, satchel, or purse, you are probably looking at three options.  One: a "pocket" style holster thats purely meant to retain the firearm and cover the trigger. Two: a holster with "hook and loop" (velcro) style backing. Third is just carrying the firearms loose in the bag which is obviously a terrible, inexcusable idea. If I need to explain why or if you are calling me a safety nazi in your mind, you need to retake a safety course.

Without going into the obvious reasons why a firearms carried outside the body inside a bag, tote, etc need a proper holster, I will go right into my venture into getting a velcro-backed kydex holster for carry in my tactical messenger bag. The holster that comes with most bags designed for concealment are just strips of velcro and nylon, and are meant to be universally adjustable for all handgun types. The retention is really poor, and only good if your bag is perpendicular to the ground. If your bag angles in any way, chances are your firearms would become loose.  If the velcro straps are too tight around the handgun, you may not easily be able to draw it when the moment of truth comes.

That's why I chose to get a kydex holster, with a leather backing and velcro.  Of the holster shops out there, I chose to go with Crossbreed Holsters as their reputation and name are both well known in the industry. The Crossbreed Ohai Modular Holster, presumably derivative of a Japanese pronounced greeting which is my best ignorant guess. The retention of my selected gun is great right out of the box, as Crossbreed handfits each holster individually, not just grabbing one off the shelf that's been preformed in a batch process. The leather backing is only as wide as it needs to be so it will work in smaller bags, and or affix to velcro panels in other static locations.  The beauty to the Ohai is it comes with a 6" x 7" velcro square that you can stick to anywhere. Under a desk, the side of a night stand, inside a vehicle center console. You can also order an Ohai Mag Holster from Crossbreed, which I also did. Same quality, same good retention of the kydex.

My only two qualms about these holsters is the sweat guard (elongated strip that follows the slide / rear of the gun. This holster is not designed to be worn on the belt or near the skin really at all, and if anything the extra height will prevent the holster from fitting in certain shallow locations. I guess CB had to put their logo somewhere, I may or may not trim it off for a better fit in my bag.

One more thing, the adhesive on some velcro does have a strength limitation. While the velcro on the back of the  Ohai holster I have no doubt are mounted well and will not come apart from the leather, I do have experience with the "loop" panels (fuzzy side) coming apart from their adhesive backings when loaded with weight of a gun over a random amount of time. My advice would be to either not leave the holstered gun attached to the velcro panels for long periods of time, or use screws to create a more permanent mount.

  • Crossbreed Warranty: If holster should EVER fail during normal use, simply return it and  will be repaired or replaced

What other aesthetic options or finishes are available?: None but extra velcro and magazine pouch available

What others are saying?: “This holster works great for my day pack. It form-fits my G19 and allows me to carry with one in the chamber without fear of it falling out or shifting. It even comes with enough loop velcro to create a couple mounting spots for the holster. Some places Ive thought of are underneath your nightstand, or under your cars dash or in your middle console. Basically any flat surface that is about 8 x 8 would be a possible mounting spot for this system. Very versatile!" MidwayUSA Review

Duluth Trading Cab Commander

Duluth Trading Cab Commander

By Jared Auchter

Have you ever found yourself in one of these situations?  You're driving down the road and all of a sudden the guy in front of you stops short, or a deer jumps out in front of your vehicle.  You slam on your brakes and what happens?  All the stuff that you had sitting on the seat next to you goes flying off and mixes all up on the floor.  Or perhaps you're someone whose car is also your mobile office.  You want to be able to keep all your gear/supplies ready and at the go but as the week goes by, what happens?  Some how all that stuff finds it way under your seats, between your seats and or lost.

So what should we do about all that?  In my humble opinion, the folks at Duluth Trading Company came up with a pretty clever solution.  The Cab Commander is a great way to finally be able to keep your vehicle clean and organized.  Tons of pockets for everything from pens, to flashlights, ID cards, cell phones, umbrellas and even a thermos holder.  I have owned one of these for almost a year now and I absolutely love it.  The material that Duluth used in constructing the Cab Commander is strong and very durable.  The feature that I love the most about this product is such a simple one.  The strap that holds the Cab Commander to the headrest also doubles as a shoulder strap allowing you to carry this from your vehicle to your job site and back with no problems what so ever.
