Pelican 1200 Case

Pelican 1200 Case

Sure enough after buying a full size Pelican gun case, I was convinced I needed to acquire the smaller sized cases the rest of my gear. The Pelican 1200 case is part of their small case line, and it's the perfect size for a single handgun, camera, or if you're me, a chronograph for those trips to the range. Like it's big brothers, the 1200 has the same super rugged copolymer polypropylene shell, open cell foam core and solid wall construction which makes it stronger and lighter that the competition. It's tough to find cases this small that also are deep enough to fit beefier items like cameras, lenses, batteries, and firearms accessories.

Pelican Case

Available in several colors, I picked up a Pelican 1200 case in tan, since it's all the rage in the gun world still. The nicest feature of the 1200 is the pluck 'n pull foam layer inside. Instead of tracing and cutting out relief for your gear, you just pry strips of foam out until your desired fit/shape is achieved. I recommend having a pen knife of other slim blade at hand to help initiate separation of foam, especially on corners. Obviously whatever shape you make will be somewhat squared due to the precut grid, but it's really great to be able to chose your own layout for items. While many reviews complain the foam is too thick and makes retrieving certain items from the bottom problematic, you can easily plan ahead by removing the foam in as big a piece as possible, then cutting that chunk in half (or thirds, or whichever) and reinserting into place for a shallower compartment.

Pelican 1200 Case

As mentioned earlier, I purposed this 1200 to fit my F1 Shooting Chronograph. Even with a lowly $100 price tag, I wanted to protect the Chrony as best as I could, since I go through such great lengths to not ventilate it at the range. The fit was perfect, and the rods just barely fit within the case's interior width (had to complete remove foam on the sides of the slot, the fit was literally just right). The batteries fit ontop of the rods, retaining them from falling out if the case is opened in a bad angle. The diffusors also conveniently fit under the main unit (the flat segments) and the 4 side segments fit lay flat on top of the foam.

Pelican 1200 Case

Like my previous review on the 1750 case, the 1200 case can be thrown in the trunk and taken on bumpy roads, or surviving the trials known as TSA luggage handlers. Dang near indestructible and keeps your expensive stuff from banging around or drowning in the drink, the Pelican 1200 will easily outlast other cheaper cases out there. Just beware, their almost like potato chips... just one is never enough!

"I bought this to replace the plastic case that came with my Beretta PX4 Storm 9mm, type F (full size). It fits the pistol along with the factory supplied spare magazine, and there's room for another spare magazine if you want to fit it in. This case allows the use of a small pad lock, which I prefer over the cable lock that came with the pistol. The shooting range I go to requires that your firearms to be cased AND locked when you're in their store area signing in, and this case works well for this purpose. I deducted 1 star for the pluck and choose foam. While they are fairly easy to pluck out to create the shape necessary to fit the pistol, I wish they've made the foam so that you can pluck it out at half-height only." Amazon User Review

Midland XTC-300 Wearable Sport Camera Review

 Midland XTC-300

By Ryan Michad

Before I was able to buy my own guns, I was a camera junkie. I filmed hockey and football games all through high school, I created professionally edited accreditation videos for our neighboring towns and got the chance to work with many cameras.  I quickly developed personal preferences for how I liked my cameras to work for me. The things I want in a camera are surprisingly simple, yet it seems like many manufacturers struggle to make a camera the way I want it.  My perfect camera is simple; it is intuitive, and it doesn’t have many external controls. I want high-definition footage, and easy transferability between the camera and the computer. I want the ability to transfer videos on the SD card, or by connecting a cable directly from the camera to the computer. I want the files to be in a common format such as MPEG-4. I can say with complete confidence that the Midland XTC-300 is 99.999% of the way there to being my perfect camera. The Midland XTC-300 is an extremely portable, high definition camera that will suit the needs of any outdoorsman or other sport enthusiast that would like to capture their escapades.  The XTC-300 allows the end user to mount the camera in many different ways.  I have personally used the camera on an ATV helmet to do a shooting course that involved an ATV.  Using the submersible case for protection, the XTC delivered beautiful video and captured the whole experience from my point of view.  If you choose to use the XTC as a normal video camera on a tripod, it excels at that as well.  All of the reviews I have done for the Firearms Insider have used the XTC-300 exclusively for all the video work. The XTC-300 never missed a beat, and captured every moment perfectly. There is a video included above that is a compilation of footage captured with the XTC-300, from many mounting positions. This video shows you the versatility of the XTC-300 in action. I am extremely impressed with the Midland XTC-300, and I have recommended the camera to several people personally who were interested in purchasing a sport-style camera. It is an EXCELLENT BUY!

Our Rating

+ It records extremely clearly. The camera easily refocuses and handles light and dark situations well. + It is extremely light. Even when the camera is attached to something on your body or that you are using, its weight is negligible. + The sound quality of the camera is superb. I have tested this camera for the sound, filming my musical endeavors, and I am very impressed with the microphone on the camera. + The supplied accessories allow you to mount the camera in many different ways to suit whatever situation you may find yourself in. + The waterproof mount allows you to film in inclement weather conditions without fear of damaging the camera.

- When using the waterproof mount the sound quality is greatly diminished. This is no fault of the camera itself, but is just a result of the waterproof case needing to be completely solid. - There is no viewfinder. Note that these sport-type cameras typically do not have a viewfinder for space reasons and for battery life reasons. This not really a negative or any fault of the camera, but it is nice to be able to make sure that you got what you wanted in the shot when you’re out in the field.
