Windham Weaponry MPC A4 Rifle Review

windham1 By Beau Summers

Well I'm pretty sure everyone knows that Windham Weaponry was started by ex-Bushmaster employees. So with that being said, I'm going to tell you a couple of key points of me choosing this rifle. Number one this rifle is 100 percent made in the USA! That is awesome! I take pride in owning a quality American made product! I bought this rifle from Cabelas because it was exclusive and comes with a sweet American flag engraved on the side. Cabelas had two choices the SRC flat top or the MPC with A2 front post and flip-up Diamondhead rear site. The MPC model with flip up Diamondhead sight was only 50 more bucks. I went for that one because those sights alone are over 100 bucks. Good deal! I also got a 50 dollar gift card with my purchase! This leads me to another reason I bought this gun. I don't have a fat wallet to go buy any gun I want. This gun came in at a very decent price at 799.99 including gift card and sale! This gun, although affordable, isn't cheaply made! The gun is solid and the upper and lower fit like a glove! The finish seems to be really durable. It has a staked gas key. It has a chrome lined barrel so cleaning has been a breeze. It comes in a pretty nice case, though I've since bought I nicer one to protect my investment. Comes with one magazine, kind of cheesy sling that I haven't used, and a support our troops magnet.  It also comes with a lifetime limited warranty that is transferable. The warranty goes where the gun goes! Also when I bought the gun 10 dollars of the money went to wounded vets who bravely served this country. This is my very first AR. I did a lot of research and video watching before I chose this company. I’ve had no issues with it to date. I've fired 260 rounds through it thus far and 160 rounds of it was cheap Russian ammo which it chewed up nicely! I love my Windham rifle don't over look the good price,  just because it cost more doesn't mean it’s better! Check out these great rifles!

“I've said nothing about the current Bushmaster, I've only commented on Windham. I agree that Windham is the better rifle and I support them 100%. The quality of their rifles is BETTER than the original Bushmasters I've owned. Taurus PT709 “Slim” Pistol Review

IMG_20140315_191701 By Justin Goodell

The Taurus PT709 is one of the first handguns I purchased because it fit my criteria: modestly priced, easily concealable 9mm for self-defense. This firearm has a 3.2" barrel, 6.24" length, 4.52" height, and 1.04" width. It weighs in at 19 oz. with an empty magazine. Capacity is 7+1. Sight system is 3-white-dot with a fixed front sight and adjustable rear sight for both windage and elevation. The magazine release is reversible for all of you wrong-handed people, but the slide stop and manual slide safety are not. It is a polymer/blued carbon steel hybrid, also available with a stainless steel slide. Trigger pull is officially listed as 5-7 lbs., and without the proper equipment, I am unable to quantify the trigger pull.

My wife and I have shot around 600 rounds through this gun so far, and I am pretty impressed with the product. However, she is not. She has fired around 200 of those and had 2 failures to feed and 1 failure to extract. I have fired twice the number of rounds and have had zero stoppages of any kind, but it's a habit of mine to strong-arm my handguns. It's possible that those failures have all been from not maintaining a solid grip.

On both sides of the grip frame, just forward and above the trigger guard on either side are little concave grooves. They are very convenient for a trigger finger rest for the dominant hand and the thumb rest for the off hand. They are perfectly placed for my average-sized man hands and assist in attaining the perfect grip consistently, draw after draw. Simple feature, but one of my favorites.

Another thing I would like to mention is that the white paint started to chip off the sights after about 3 months of daily carry with draw/reholster drills with a hybrid leather and kydex IWB holster a few days per week. I attempted to fill the recesses in with some florescent orange nail polish thanks to my wife, but the nail polish seemed to dry somewhat translucent. I removed the nail polish, applied the brightest white model enamel (like the stuff you paint model cars and airplanes with) I could find, and have not had another problem since.

I carry this daily inside the waistband in a leather/kydex holster by Shepperd Leather and have not had any issues with the gun, the holster, or any combination thereof. No accidentally dropping mags, no hang-ups, no sticking. Speaking of magazines dropping, the release is very low-profile but still easy to use. The shape and placement is perfect. The button only actuates when deliberately pressed, yet it's easy to do so.

Finally, the fun factor. I really enjoy taking this gun to the range! It's fun to shoot, makes easy follow-up shots, and is easy to clean, even at the range. It is my everyday carry pistol for now until I can afford to buy something that I can grow into, not out of.

VersaCarry Zero Bulk Holster for Ruger LC9 Review

versacarry-holstered By Larry Lovejoy

As a gun owner new to conceal carry I'm not exactly sure which holster is best for me. I did find however that the Versacarry ZeroBulk holster is not the one for me.  Very uncomfortable to wear. Imagine most gun owners will notversacarry-breakin like the idea that the retention rod leaves a residue.   I found this holster to be very uncomfortable although small and lightweight. There isn't any padding/leather between the firearm and body as found in other types of holsters. VersaCarry’s “safety warnings” page should give you a clue for what you’re in for. This is probably not a holster that meets your needs.

VersaCarry should be called Very Expensive piece of plastic. It's not scary expensive, but being priced over an actual "holster" puts it in that category. Sure, you can easily access your piece, but when you have to put it away or even just put it on, you have to completely take it off, shove that plastic stud back into the barrel and "shimmy" back inside your pants.

Beretta M9 Pistol Review

M9_8x6 By Justin Kepley

A good friend of mine gave me a call one day and asked if I would be interested in taking a CCW class with him. I said "sure, but I do not currently have my own gun, but I can get one for the day of the class".  A week or so before we were scheduled for the CCW class I borrowed a handgun from a family member, we set up some targets to shoot, partly for fun, but to also make sure we could hit what we intended to hit on the day of our class.  That day at our homemade range I was able to shoot a Glock 17, a Smith and Wesson Sigma .40, and a small .22lr revolver.  It had been years since I had shot a gun, but almost instantly I knew I had found my new hobby.

After taking the class and getting my CCW permit, it was time to start shopping for a gun that I would be happy with.  I went into the search with all options open. I started by researching which caliber I would fit my needs the best and when I decided to go with the 9mm I started my homework on the different makes and models of pistols.

I read everything I could get my hands on from varying gun magazines, to online blogs, to a firearm encyclopedia. At that point I had narrowed my search down to just a handful of possibilities. On the polymer side of the coin I was left with the Glock, M&P, and XD and on the non-polymer side I was down to CZ-75B or Beretta 92FS. (It was at this point when a Google search of "Glock, M&P, and XD" lead me to the Gun Guy Radio episodes 20 and 21. I started listening then and have now gone back to listen to all back episodes.)

I borrowed a Glock 17, a CZ-75B, and Beretta 92FS and went to shoot.  After several rounds, I realized that the heavier gun just felt better to me so I knew my choice would be between the Beretta and CZ.  Both felt great in my hands and both shot without any issues. I was still torn until I asked advise from a lifelong friend who has been a member of our military for nearly 20 years, he said "Beretta is a great gun, just heavy for a 9, if you don't mind the weight you will not be disappointed". He also mentioned the M9, stating it was the same as the 92FS except for the military markings and sights.

I think I drove my wife crazy with all of the YouTube videos comparing different guns, most notably Hickok45, or constantly listening to the Firearms Radio Network on my iPhone. I can honestly say that the gun was worth all of the time and research I put into it, I have taught wife and child how to safely handle and shoot the Beretta.  And to this point I have not had a single failure to feed, stovepipe, Hang fire, or any other malfunctions.  All in all if you are looking for a solid gun for home protection I would highly recommend the Beretta 92FS/M9 platform.

Duluth Trading Company Ball Room Jeans Review

pants 1

I was in the market for a pair of jeans that would not only be tough enough to work with me all day long, but also nice looking enough where I could throw on a good shirt and take the wife out.  I was listening to an episode of Gun Guy Radio on my way to work and I heard Jake start talking about the Duluth Trading Company Ball Room Jeans and how much he enjoyed wearing them.  So I looked at Duluth's website and saw that they have a No Bull Guarantee Return Policy, so that sealed the deal and I ordered myself a pair.  I have officially been wearing these jeans for a year now and they have held up extremely well.  I have done everything from range time, wearing to work and weekend warrior activities and these jeans still look as good as the day I purchased them.  Not to mention that my "business" is more than comfy and I can crouch without the ouch.  My one and only complaint about these jeans are the front pockets.  Although the pockets are extra deep and great for carrying things, the actual opening of them is a bit snug.

By the way, if you haven't heard the Duluth Trading commercial for ball room jeans, it's hilarious.  Duluth Ball Room Jeans Brainstorming Commercial

Suunto Core Watch Review

Suunto watch By Jeremy Linares

If that Timex isn’t cutting it anymore and you want to step your game up, the Suunto Core does everything but tie your shoes for you. The all black model that I purchased is the perfect blend of tactical and practical. Made in Finland, this is much more than your standard digital timepiece. The watch features an altimeter, barometer and digital compass which means it’ll tell you the elevation, air pressure and you should be able to figure that last one out for yourself. My favorite function of this watch is the storm alert, where it judges changes in air pressure over a period of time and alerts you that it’s about to get nasty out. I’ve found all of these functions have been extremely accurate to their analog counterparts. I like to think that if I was dropped in the middle of the backcountry, this watch would be the key to safely making my way to civilization.

SABRE Red Pepper Spray Keychain Review

12885885054_d9ab97b34a_b By Bradley Johnson

12885463185_caeb56706d_oThere are times when carrying a firearm for protection is not an option. Born and raised in California, I have never had that right (Although I remain hopeful). I daily carry a variety of folding knives. Knives are a viable option for self-defense. I've trained in Kali Silat for years, but like all self-defense tactics, it is a perishable skill. It also requires hand to hand/close contact. Most people don't train with the knives they carry, and this is why I believe that pepper spray would be a better option for people to protect themselves.

Sabre Red pepper spray is used by both law enforcement officers, and civilians to ensure their safety. Although this version is pink, they offer it in black as well. I think that it's great that Security Equipment Corporation (Sabre Red) has partnered with the National Breast Cancer Foundation. To date, they have donated over $600,000 to the foundation. I think that the ethics of a company are as important as the product they sell. As if that weren't enough, it's also made in the U.S.A!

This model delivers 25 "blasts" of pepper spray at a range of 10 feet. It's small enough to toss in your pocket (or purse), and comes with a quick detach key ring should you choose to attach it to your key ring.

The Sabre Red formula is maximum strength, and the canister features ballistic stream delivery which reduces wind blow back. The tab on top must be slid counter clockwise to engage (a safety feature), and has a textured edge to help your thumb grab hold.  I like that it is pink because people don't immediately realize what it is. As with any type of self-defense, practice is essential. Sabre offers practice spray, and targets. They also offer videos, and training. If you purchase from their website then you can add practice spray for only $4.99. The practice spray comes with a how to video, practice tips, and a target! They also have a price break for quantities of 10 or more (10% off, and free shipping).

Brownells Oxpho-Blue Review

12731519895_3d394384ca_b By Bradley Johnson

I had heard good things about Brownells, but this was my first experience with one of their products.

I recently purchased a Lee Enfield rifle. It came with a 5 round hunting magazine. 5 round magazines were never produced for this rifle. In order to make this rifle legal for deer hunting, Bubba took a hack saw, and a blow torch to a standard 10 round mag.

As you can see in the photo, brass was used to solder the bottom of the mag to the chopped upper portion. The mag was in terrible shape when I received it. I spent a lot of time stripping the spray paint, and smoothing out a lot of the rough sanding/scrape marks. I knew that the blue would not take to the brass, but I wanted to restore the magazine as well as possible.

I chose the creme formula because it allows for more control. The liquid variant does a great job as well, but I felt that the viscosity of the creme would be beneficial. I found it easy to use, and the results were terrific! I know that nothing can come close to a traditional hot blue, but Brownells Oxpho-Blue is definitely the next best thing.

The key to success is preparation. It is important to remove any previous finish, and polish the surface. Degreasing the metal is not required, but I would recommend it (I used Acetone). Heating the metal is also not required. However, I would highly recommend it. I've worked with metal for years, and I can tell you from experience that warm metal will accept a treatment far better than cold.

My process: 1. Polish 2. Degrease 3. Heat 4. Apply Oxpho-Blue 5. Remove Oxpho-Blue with a used clean T-shirt 6. Polish with 0000 Steel Wool 7. Repeat steps 3-6 until desired finish is achieved 8. Flush with hot water to stop the action of the acid 9. Apply oil or CLP to all blued surfaces and let cure over night 10. wipe down the following day

For only $10, I was able to refinish this magazine (with plenty of creme left for future projects). It would also be nice to use for small touch-ups on the high wear areas of hot blued parts. It is by no means a replacement for traditional hot blue. However, I am really satisfied with this product.

Firearms Insider Reviews - 8 Key Points

Claim to Fame: The toughest cold blue. Application is reasonably simple.

FNBs (Features & Benefits of this product):

What others are saying?: “I started trying to remove the Oxpho-Blue from the barrel with 000 cleaned steel wool. The more I tried to remove the blue it started getting an even polished lustrous blue finish over the whole gun. I wanted it darker so I put a very small amount of blue on 000 cleaned steel wool and would rub it with some pressure on the gun until it dried. After letting it set for a few minutes I would burnish the dried blue and it got better and better. Repeated this 6 times. It only took about 2 hours to do this.

My friend cannot believe how good the blue job looks, far exceeded his and my expectations.” - Cabelas Customer Review

Sig Sauer 1911-22 Pistol Review

  12723956105_b866bf4ff9_b

By Bradley Johnson

I know what you're thinking; "Why would I want a 1911 that shoots .22?" Well, the answer is simple, because it's a blast!

This Sig Sauer (formerly GSG) 1911-22 is a full size 1911. The operation, and ergonomics are identical to a Colt M1911A1 pistol. In fact, many parts are interchangeable with a standard 1911-45. However, unlike the M1911A1, ammo doesn't cost an arm and a leg. It's this very reason that many people opt to supplement their training with a .22LR.

12724119843_8cd4ffb844_bIt comes in a decent hard shell, foam lined case. Included in the case are Allen keys (needed for takedown), 2 magazines, a pistol lock, a replacement guide rod buffer disc, a chamber brush, and 2 front sight posts(2 sizes).

One of the really cool additional features of this (well, not this one, because I reside in California) pistol is that the barrel is threaded by the factory. Unfortunately, the cap on my pistol is fixed due to my state of residence.

Take down is very similar to a standard 1911. However, there are additional pins that require the use of an Allen key. I was originally bothered by this, but it's not a deal breaker.

The pistol is made of some type of alloy, and as such cannot be finished with a traditional hot blue. I suppose this was done to keep the cost down. The finish is not great. It seems like some type of paint, and it scratched/wears easily if you're not careful. It is my biggest complaint about the pistol. Another area of concern are the sights. They're bright, and it's easy to get a good sight picture, but they're made of plastic! Perhaps this is why they supply a replacement front sight in the kit.

12725771204_83fcef1c48_b

At the range, this pistol performed beautifully. I used the12725304505_5272d87637_b recommended CCI Mini Mag for the break-in period, and did not have a single misfeed, or failure to eject. Since the break-in period, I have fed several other brands of ammo thru it without any problems. Considering the price point, I feel that the accuracy of this pistol is excellent. The wood grips feel pretty good in my hands, and if they're not your cup of tea then just replace them with your favorite 1911 grips. Overall, I am very pleased with this purchase.

Sig Sauer 1911 .22 Review

Sig Sauer 1911 22 Now I am a 1911 guy. I love all 1911’s. Unfortunately this is only my second one I currently own. I purchased the Sig Sauer 1911 .22 so I could train with “cheaper ammo”. I know, what 22LR? Well I have been able to keep a steady supply and its definitely cheaper than .45. Also my son is kinda fond of my Colt 1911 in .45 but is a little to small to shoot it yet. This on the other hand he shoots like a pro. It is a bit picky about ammo and needs the good stuff (hi velocity) tho cycle the slide reliably. Now as it turns out, this pistol is manufactured for Sig Sauer by GSG and GSG seems to sale for about $100 less. Why did I buy the Sig? Because I found it in the store. Also I feel the finish might be a little better compared to the GSG’s I have seem. Or maybe that is my justification for paying more. It came with only one magazine so I went online to purchase extra’s and found that they are about $30 dollars. I also discovered there are few nifty accessories and upgrades for the Sig Sauer/GSG. They make +4 followers for the magazines as well as +1 and +3 base plates. I also discovered an accurizing kit that replaces the guide rod and bushing with stainless parts. Although I have only had this for a short time, I have put 5-600 rounds through it with only a couple of misfeeds. I really like the fit and finish as well as the extended ambi-safety and extended slide release.

SightMark UltraShot Pro Spec NV QD Reflex Sight Review

Sightmark By Warner Peredes

The SightMark Pro Spec NV QD is a entry level reflex sight with the makings to be a viable option on your AR or other modern sporting rifle. This is a well-built reflex sight with the AR red coated lens surrounded by aluminum construction similar to much more expensive EOTechs. The glass itself is dual layered and durable with torture testing SightMark2 videos posted on YouTube from the company itself! This model comes with a quick detach mount, NV compatible (3 settings), 4 pattern reticles, and 3 brightness settings. The reticles are extremely clear and visible during daytime operations and better at night. I have used this sight in Belgium and it held up with no problem. On a side note, during a trek through thorn bushes the QD mount lever snagged on some vines and ripped the optic off my rifle. This is not the optics fault, but a reason to keep in mind why some mounts are better fixed and not QD. Came with manual, cloth, wrench, and battery.

Firearms Insider Reviews - 8 Key Points

Claim to Fame: If you are not deploying or using this as your only survival rifle optic, this is an affordable choice to have on multiple AR uppers or other rifles. The company states clearly that this is tested to withstand calibers up to .50 caliber! The Pro Spec runs around $120.00 with sales taking it down to almost $80.00 at certain times of the year.

Target Market: This is an awesome range time or even good enough to take to a rifle class. The best way to test its performance is taking it out and testing it. The company does not advocate using it in wet conditions! Its water-resistant, not water-proof.

  • Temp:-10-50(c)
  • Weight:7.7 oz

What other aesthetic options or finishes are available?: The SightMark UltraShot Pro Spec NV QD Reflex Sight is only available in black.

What others are saying?: “Have owned 2 of these for over a year. Both have held up wonderfully. I found out the hard way that they are waterproof and VERY shock resistant. I've dropped mine and it held zero like a champ.

This is not meant to compete with the EOtech or Aimpoint units; however, it does. The only downside is the low battery life (only 2-2.5 hours of actual operation time on high power). I usually take a couple of extra batteries with me anytime I go on a trip.

If you plan on using a zoom behind this unit, you'll want to get one that mounts low or get a riser for the sight (they don't line up very well).

FIREClean Review

FIREClean 1 Fireclean gun oil is one of the best gun oils I have used to date.  It does everything it should do and more. It lubricates, protects, cleans, and most importantly it helps reduce carbon buildup.  While using Fireclean I have found that my rimfire's will shoot for a longer number of rounds and are easier to clean. The carbon and even lead deposits seem to just wipe off.  When using this oil with a suppressor on an AR15 there is less buildup of gunk on the bolt carrier.  Fireclean lubricates extremely well, it makes rifles and pistols cycle smoother and is better than any other oil I have used.

Microtech Small Arms Research STG-556 and E4 Rifles Review

MSAR STG-556

I am very torn in this situation, due to so many factors.  My personal experience was both pleasant and unpleasant. I bought the rifle new and unfired from an individual on GunBroker. Once I received it and got the drool wiped off, I  took it out for a test drive.  I loved it! The rifle fired well with anything I  gave it, but the very next day a problem arose.  My greatest fear was confirmed on this dream gun that I  had scored such a deal on and saved on months end for.

I found a crack in the rear trunion of the cast receiver. I immediately called MSAR and was promptly placed in contact with a nice older gentleman named Paul.  He was VERY professional and kind and asked me to ship it to him and he would take a look. By this point in time, MSAR had already been fighting bankruptcy and restructuring, attempting to develop the E-4 rifle.  MSAR had several instances where there were issues with a few of their rifles and I won't go into all that, a quick google search and you will have your fill of all the haters online. Long story short, MSAR made it right for me.  They hunted down a brand new receiver and placed my serial number on that new piece, then gave it a complete factory overhaul with all the updated parts. I asked them to shoot it until they felt confident it was fixed, so they did.  When I got the rifle back it was perfect, updated and has never missed a beat since!

Now the reason I say it was also unpleasant, as a member of a class 3 firearms business myself, I have attempted to become a dealer for them ( multiple times) because I  was SO blown away with the service Paul gave me in the shop.  Unfortunately Paul doesn't run MSAR, he is actually in retirement, the company struggles with customer service in returning calls and email department.  So with all that said, I am extremely happy with my stg-556 but will most likely not be buying anymore MSAR rifles due to such unstable management.  If i'm going to drop $2000 on a new rifle, I want to be reassured that company will be around if and when it breaks so I can get replacement parts and service. With that being said, I hate to be a Judas, but I'm going to have to say I  would go with a STEYR if purchasing another.

CRKT M16-14SF Folding Knife Review

CRKT M16-14SF By Dustin Bornman

The CRKT M16-14SF, has become a staple in my collection of knifes. I rarely leave home without this in my pocket. I love the balance, the blade and the tactical capacity of this knife. The pocket clip can be moved to one of 4 locations depending on the users desired carry position. In the position that I prefer the clip to be in, the blade is up and facing rearward in the right front pocket. If you pull the knife straight up and slightly forward, the blade stays closed. But if pulled upward and slightly rearward, the blade automatically opens and is ready for use. This is by far, the best option from a tactical standpoint for me.

The flipper is quite fast almost as fast as my assisted folders! I love this knife.” - Knife Center Customer Reviewer John D.

“This knife is amazing. It fits snuggly in my pocket, but is burly enough to chop tree branches for kindling. The dual flips act as a hilt, giving it the feel and balance of a full-tang blade. The handle is light aluminum with a durable coating, but the steel maintains its edge better than any knife I’ve owned, so the tip is always ready for fine cutting. The serrated base of the blade comes in handy for skinning game or cutting rope, and is easy to sharpen with the right tool.” - T.S. Wallace, The Adventures of Man

StealthGear ONYX IWB Holster for Springfield XD 40 Sub-Compact Review

StealthGear-ONYX-e1399153004456.jpg

StealthGear ONYX IWB 2 Overall, I am very new to the concealed carry scene, purely due to the fact that I live in Illinois, and up until 2 months ago it wasn't an option. However, those days are over. I was like any other person that was new to concealed carry in the fact that I was overwhelmed with the amount of holster choices available to me. IWB? OWB? Kydex? Leather? Hybrid? The list goes on and on. My daily carry gun is a Springfield XD40 Sub-Compact, so this is what I was looking to conceal. I ended up with a StealthGear ONYX IWB Holster. Based on my overall satisfaction of this holster, I don't think that I could have gone with a better first choice for a holster, right out of the gate!StealthGear ONYX

The heart of the StealthGear ONYX IWB is its revolutionary VentCore TM breathable platform. StealthGear claims that "this innovative ventilation system allows moisture to rapidly dissipate away from your body, leaving you dry and comfortable, all day long. No other holster will keep you drier! StealthGear ventilated holster platforms are built with a unique combination of synthetic non moisture-absorbing materials and stainless steel hardware. You will not find a tougher, lighter or more comfortable IWB holster on the market today." Personally, I cannot find fault in any of their claims. I have virtually worn this holster every day for the last two months, and find this to be very comfortable. During my normal day job, I am unable to carry my firearm. However, I choose to continue to wear this holster...it is that comfortable that I do not even notice it or find it bothersome.

StealthGearAs far as the rest of the features go, everything else is of pure quality. The function and fit are great. I have positive retention between the holster and gun at all times, and in many different positions. The feel of this holster, even against bare skin is vey comfortable, not just between layers. The ride height and the cant are both adjustable to your liking as well. Like I stated before, this is the first holster that I started to carry with (I have since had others purchased for one reason or another for this gun and others), and I think that I was lucky finding the best one. With that being said, it took me a week or two decide what combination of position, along with ride height, and cant worked best for me. This StealthGear ONYX IWB holster allowed me to find that perfect combination with ease.

Three Circles Knives, Satori Tanto Review

Three Circles Knives, Satori Tanto If you have spent anytime outdoors, it becomes apparent very quickly that a quality knife is a must have tool.  Whether you're just out for a small ganter in the woods or on an epic two week hunt in the backcountry, a solid dependable knife is a must have!!

There are so many uses for a knife in outdoor environments, it’s ridiculous.  They can be used for hunting, skinning a fresh kill, a cooking utensil, cutting up your prized tri tip, pry bar, screw driver, cutting wood for a fire, the list could go on and on.  Let’s face it, your backcountry knife cannot fail.

Enter the Satori Tanto Knife from Three Circles Knives.  The ninja of ancient Japan used “Sanmitsu”, which means three circles, to help prepare themselves for a challenge they may face.  The Three Circles stands for action, thought and word.  “Satori” means enlightenment in Japanese which Travis, the founder of Three Circles Knives, found fitting for their first knife.  The “Tanto” blade has been around forever in weaponry history.  Tanto is a blade pattern often associated with tactical knives due to its exceptional stabbing ability from a reinforced tip design.  The Tanto blade was introduced into the United States in the 1980’s.

Due to the Tanto pattern and it’s strength in design, this knife, which was crafted from a solid piece of 440C stainless steel, is absolutely indestructible compared to a typical folding knife.  Everyone knows you can’t go out into the backcountry without a fixed blade knife.  This knife is so reliable that I carry it with me everywhere.  I just keep it in my vehicle and when I know a pocket knife isn’t up to the task, I grab my Three Circles Tanto Knife.

I do have a few complaints about the knife.  The price is high.  Now, do I think this knife is worth the cost?  Absolutely!!  I believe in the buy once cry once theory.  I guess you could consider this my crying.  I was also disappointed with sharpness of the blade out of the box.  Now don’t get me wrong, most manufacturers have a tendency to send dull blades out of the factory.  This knife felt extra dull.  Would that keep me from purchasing this knife?  No.  A quick little sharpening session got me comfortable in handling this battle blade.

Do yourself a favor and check out Three Circles Knives.  They have some “Factory Seconds”, or blemished knives on sale right now that will get a Satori Tanto in your hands at a fairly decent price point.

AIM Sports Mosin Nagant Combo Kit Review

mosinkit The Mosin Nagant 91/30 rifle is one of the most common and sought after budget rifles even still today. Russia's old warhorse is still circulating around the world, and if you don't already have one or two sitting in your safe, you are missing out on some of the most fun and affordable shooting there is to be had. Many DIYers choose the platform to build hunting, varminting, or tactical bolt guns because of its low cost and availability. Most Big Box Sporting Goods stores like Big 5 will carry the 91/30 is stock as well as Cabelas or Bass Pro Shop.

Many Mosin owners who do not claim to be purists may be tempted to accessorize the rifle. Some manufacturers have come up with kits to make it cheap and easy to do this. I myself in a moment of weakness gave into temptation and bought a "Deluxe Accessory Kit" from AIM Sports. After installing the scope mount, the scope and rings, and the recoil pad, I thought I had made a reasonably good investment for $75 after tax. Then I started looking at the fit and finish, and after a few more minutes was immediately flooded with regret. Upon racking the bolt and dry firing the rifle a few times, I witnessed the lens in the scope minutely tilt forward each time the firing pin dropped. Cheap Chinese made optics with poor internals, who knew? Luckily I had opened the packaging very discretely with a blade so I was able to repack everything and return it with no questions asked.

The conundrum with putting a scope on the Nagant is three fold.  One, you have to use a "Scout" scope with a long eye relief in order to operate the stock bolt (Alternatively you can pay to have a bent bolt modification and use a traditional scope with conventional eye relief).  Two, the mounts are often questionable unless made right, and that will be costly.  Third and lastly, any scope that costs less than the rifle itself is probably rubbish.

This scope in particular is an AIM Sports 2-7 x 32mm with a 1" tube, that has an an eye relief of 8.5"-10.5" and 1/4 M.O.A.windage and elevation adjustments, a blue lens coating, a length of 10.5" and a weight of 9 oz. The clarity of the optic (before the lens issue) was moderately okay, the parallax was set within 60-100 yards and I felt like it would have been useful at shooting between 100-300 yards. The magnification ring was very gritty when rotating through the levels and had a very alarming click, almost like a bearing falling into a detent, at the 7x position. The ring also appeared to be sealed with a very sloppy O-Ring, which gave it alot of play forward and rearward. Even if the scope hadn't failed after dry firing, I have absolutely no confidence it would have held up to a single round of 7.62x54R. Pretending it would have held integrity, the scope and rings surely wouldn't have survived the first shot anyway.

The scope rings included are junk, with just two screws per ring they were too short to even bite the threading. I found myself screwing one side an eighth of a turn, then alternating back and forth so the top segment of the ring would tighten down evenly, but the opposite screw would still pop right out onto the floor. I had to use some extra screws from my drawer to replace all 4 of AIM's. After all that trouble and handling, the blued finish had looked like it had been in action for a few years. The thumb adjustment knobs were a soft metal and were no match for my screwdriver either apparently. Now, onto the scope base.

The picatinny scope base itself mounts into the rear sight block, requiring the removal of the rear sight and leaf spring. Easy enough, but it mounts using the single pin hole and thus becomes a "seesaw" or "teeter toter" that requires set three screws to be tightened down against the receiver. There was no instruction on how to use these set screws to obtain the optimum angle, and tightening one just caused the other end to dip down. When I tightened all three to a degree I felt left the mount level the the bore, I was still unsatisfied with the security and how easy it was to push a side down or up. The instructions called for the leaf spring to be removed, but I found that leaving it in at least gave some tension and improved the mounting. When the rings and scope is mounted, I found that the extra couple inches of rail in the front interfered with using the scope covers, so it would have to be cut off.

mosinkit2

At least the rubber recoil pad had to be an improvement to the stock Rusky metal butt plate, right? Guess again, as it didn't line up with either screw hole, and a flush fit would have required sanding and reshaping the contour of the stock. Even then it didn't line up with the stock, but perhaps thats just a difficult task with all the different variations in these stocks that came from all over Europe.

The sling looked like a standard replica of the original russian slings, khaki colored even though the package specifically calls it green. I didn't even take the sling out of the package as I knew this kit was going to be returned promptly. If you have a 91/30 or M44 and wish to outfit it with optics and accessories, I would be reluctant to try this kit. I didn't get a quality equivalent to the amount I paid for, and I can't imagine it working for anybody else (unless that particular kit was an older generation).  Bottom line, it's a disgrace to the Motherland.

I had the opportunity to wear these pants in everything from snow, desert, shooting, and to church on Sunday.  These pants are that versatil.  They are crafted of a nice fire hose cotton blend that feels soft against the skin and flexible in all the right places.  These pants are some what heavy which made them perfect in the snow.  They are also water resistant, so when the snowball fight ensued, I knew I was going to stay dry.  I’ve worn these pants shooting in the high desert of Nevada.  Nevada desert is not a place you would want to be without some quality pants.  I scraped and blazed through the sagebrush hunting for varmints and these pants didn't make a peep.  Every time I caught a branch, I’d just keep on trucking.  The pants weren’t even phased.  Upon inspection back at camp, I couldn’t see one mark in the fire hose fabric presenting a tear or puncture.  My shins could rest easy that they wouldn’t be scraped up from the brush.  These pants are great for the range as well.  They are durable and flexible.  I could transition easily with these pants from standing to kneeling to prone without any hesitations of getting uncomfortable.  I highly recommend these pants for inclement weather range days.

If you’re faced with real man jobs, makes sure you have the right tools for the job.  Checkout Duluth Trading Company’s Fire Hose Work Pants.

Wiley X Sabre Advanced Shooting Glasses Review

Eye protection is something that most people take for granted. I wear prescription glasses and have for years just wore them when shooting. Last year I decided it was time to get some proper shooting glasses to give me adequate protection. In the past nothing had ever happened to make me think about it. However a while ago I was shooting my Thompson Contender with some older rounds, I had the back of a case blowout and it peppered my face a bit. So I started looking for shooting glasses that allowed me to have a prescription and without breaking the bank. I came across Wiley X, high quality, reasonable cost and versatile. They offer many styles and lens colors. I took a liking to the Wiley X Sabre Advanced Shooting glasses line. It has a nice wrap-around design with interchangeable lenses. The lens choices are clear, grey, light rust, yellow and vermilion. I chose the three lens pack with light grey, rust and vermilion plus I bought a set of clear. This way I have two frames to put my favorite lenses in and swap the prescription inserts. The inserts are $20 plus the cost of the lenses from you local eye doctor.

  • WileyX Customer Reviews : I went to Afghanistan, was in a convoy and got ambushed. The insurgents shot an RPG into the back of our Hummvee which caused shrapnel to hit me in the head. Due to me wearing the PT1's none of the pieces hit my eyes. I'm recovering now from my wounds, but I just wanted to say thank you for those glasses. If I hadn't been wearing them I might have lost an eye. 1SG David
