Blackhawk SERPA CQC w/Matte Finish for a 1911 Review

 

About two years ago I decided that I wanted to start to open carry. It was a multi purpose decision, since I am unable to carry at work I needed a holster that was easy to get on after work and I did not feel like having to get all tucked in in the car beside adding a few pounds made it a little uncomfortable to carry IWB. I also decided I wanted some retention if i was going to open carry. The Serpa seemed to fit the bill. It come with both a belt loop and paddle attachment, I use the paddle. With the clips they provide, the paddle can be a bit of a challenge to remove witch is a good thing except when its time to remove. After a few days you learn just how to twist to get it to slip off. It offers a cant adjustment for forward, neutral or rear. Now I carry a 1911 officer and the holster is not made for that specific model. Basically the frame, trigger housing and such is the same on al 1911’s so the officer slipped right in  and locked in place. The holster was just about an inch too long for the barrel so I took the handy saw and cut the end off to make it flush. This is a nice well made holster tbut I would like the pistol to fit a little tighter, when the weapon it locked into place it will rock forward and back a bit. Not terrible but gives it the ability to rub on the finish. As far as retention goes I like it. There have been some stories of people having accidental discharges while drawing from this holster. Personally I think they need more training in finger control since the design allows you to lay your index finger along the slide as it should be as you draw. Overall I have been satisfied.

Henry Classic Lever Action .22

The Henry Repeater is one of the great American firearms. The original not only had an impact in the civil war but also gave the platform to which Winchester improved upon. Winchester continued on to create some of the best lever actions in the world. It all started with the original Henry design. Granted, that the little .22 plinker being reviewed here is a far cry from the original Henry repeater, it still feels nostalgic in a sense when shooting it. Shooting a lever action is just plain fun, and when you think about the fact that your shooting the firearms equivalent of the great great great grandchild of the it makes it all the much better. That being said this is a budget friendly gun that is built to a high standard of reliability and accuracy but is by no means a work of art or an engineering masterpiece.

Pelican 1015 Micro Case Review

Pelican Products is one of the most bragged upon brands of gear cases advertising “the toughest airtight and waterproof protective cases on the planet”. I got this size case to replace a cheaper case that I kept in the front pocket of my Maxpedition Fatboy Versipack. The case claims to be crushproof, which I can attest to. Another reviewer put that claim to the test by parking his car on top of it. His came out fine, but mine wasn’t so lucky. The case was not crushed, but the hinge cracked a little. It is still completely usable, but it’s just a little cracked up, now(but still water resistant). Pelican does not state this case as waterproof, but water-resistant. I have seen a few tests that make me confident that this case truly is waterproof. There is a pressure relief valve on the case, which means that you can carry or pack it on an airplane without the pressure change crushing the case. There are two loops that you could thread a strap through and a ring where you can put a carabiner or cord for multiple carrying options. If anyone needs a heavy-duty, water-tight, crushproof case for any gear, I would highly recommend Pelican Cases. They are available in larger and smaller sizes to accommodate many needs.

Maglite XL200 LED Flashlight Review

I bought this light as my first carry light. I immediately loved it. My plan was to carry it in my back pocket, where I could easily reach it. The next day, while at work, I took it out of my pocket and it never went back in. It was a little too bulky for daily carry, but that’s not to say that it’s a bad light. It is very bright with an advertised lumen output of 172. The reflector is deep, which allows the light to throw the beam very far. I would say that the beam is usable to at least 75 yards. The user-interface is unique, though a bit odd. There is a single button on the rear of the light. To activate it, you press the button once, and it’s on. If you hold the button down, while also twisting the light in your hand, it will dim or brighten the beam(depending on which way you twist it) through the use of an accelerometer. To switch to other modes, you have to quickly tap the rear button differing amounts of times. Once for on, twice for strobe, three times for sleep(more on that in a second), four for signal mode, and five for SOS. The strobe have variable speeds activated the same way you dim/brighten the light. The sleep mode is a mode that leaves the light on your selected level until you set it down. Once it is still for a few seconds, the beam will dim to its lowest level. This could be used as a night light and locating the light in the dark. As soon as you pick it up, the beam goes back to your selected level. The SOS mode sets it to blink in the universal SOS pattern(3 long beams, 3 short beams, 3 long beams). The run-time is not great on high. I have never officially timed it, but it just seems to always die or be dim. Another negative would be that the light is completely round, so it doesn’t have anything to keep it from rolling off of a table. You can buy the Mini Maglite Accessory Pack and use the slip-on anti-roll head. This will also give you color filters, if you want. In the end, I would not recommend this light for carry, but as a relatively inexpensive, feature-packed light for all other occasions, I would recommend it.

Glock 42 Review

Quite possibly the most anticipated firearm of SHOT Show 2014 and perhaps the whole year, is the Glock 42 .380 auto. Of course the number 1 comment about the pistol is what it isn't - a 9mm single stack pistol. Glock claims "Years of requests across market groups for a super-concealable, reliable single-stack .380 GLOCK pistol prompted extensive research and development to bring the GLOCK customer the G42." I would question if the majority of those customer requests were indeed for the .380 chambering. Despite the caliber controversy, the handgun itself is a new generation in the Glock family tree. The frame has been reduced, simplified, and altered in minute ways, making the G42 Glock's answer to the pocket pistol market, which has seen a flare up in the last 5-6 years as other manufacturers have released offerings in single stack, slimmer framed pistols that are better suited for concealed carry.

I was fortunate enough to get my hands on a G42 from a buddy at local gun shop High Mountain Hunting Supply. The loaner came with limited ammo, and literally every source in town had sold out of .380 auto except for costly self defense flavors. While my range time was somewhat brief due to ammo availability, I was able to really embrace the size and shape of the gun. I found not only the frame to be pleasingly slimmer than every other Glock I've held, but the contours of the back and frontstraps to be more comfortable. The G42's trigger doesn't have the ridges on the trigger like other Glocks, and the blade is also narrower. Thats about where the positives stop for me, as everything else about the G42 I found unsatisfactory.

The trigger was a beast, feeling closer to 8-10lbs than the advertised 5.5lbs. It was stubborn, requiring much more pressure to achieve the break. I cannot say if this can be said for every G42 or just this one, but it was very unpleasant and made accurate shot placement difficult. The recoil itself felt about how it should with round nose 90 gr rounds. I did have some feeding issues, but again with limited ammo for the session I wasn't able to diagnose whether it was a magazine issue, an ammo issue, or a gun issue. In reading other internet review, it seems the feeding issues aren't uncommon. Most armchair Glock experts will snap "You're just limpwristing" or "You're thumbs are touching the slide, interfering with recoil." I suspect it's the dual recoil springs (sound familiar, Gen 4 owners?) or ammo, or a combination of both.

I brought along a G26 Gen3 for comparison as the previous flagship subcompact of Glock. The 42 is skinnier in the width department at 24 mm / 0.94 inches, but is still slightly wider than a Keltec P3AT or Ruger LCP. The grip of the 42 is about the same length of the grip on the 26, which still may leave the pinky finger hanging out in the wind for fellow medium-size mitted shooters. The barrel is 3.25" , and the capacity is only 6 rounds with the standard factory magazines, which is fairly common with pocket pistols of it's class. The frame's concave thumb recesses have been redesigned as a simple small ledge instead, and I found that with the smaller frame it made sense and still felt like I was able to get a good purchase every time.

With the trigger and feeding issues with the G42, I was still able to shoot better with the G26.  But that can be chalked up to time spent behind the trigger.

All in all, I think the Glock 42 is a good concept that should have been tested and developed further to iron out some of the issues that many others are claiming. Perhaps pressure was high from the sales/marketing departments for a 2014 SHOT Show release, leading to the questionable "perfection" of this model.  Regardless, the G42 will fit a niche that seems to be growing each year as CCW permit holders increase and the market shifts to more comfortable single stack CCW-centric models. The buzz has brought .380auto shortage, becoming just as scarce as .22lr at this time in my area, I still would prefer to hold out for a single stack 9mm personally.  However for the time being, the G42 is hard to pass up, and I would encourage everyone to try it on for size. Just beware of its shortcomings, lower your expectations for the initial performance and maybe, just maybe, the one you take home will work like it should.

Laser Ammo - SureStrike Ultimate LE Edition

The SureStrike Ultimate LE Edition laser trainer is a cool package deal. In it you get a laser trainer cartridge for 9mm, .40 S&W, and .45 ACP, and a .223 laser cap. You also get pistol barrel inserts to make sure that your firearm is clear, a carrying case, and 6 reflective targets. The targets have little holes so you can hang or pin them up. The Laser caps are really easy to use, you just have to swap out one part for another to switch to a different caliber. You have to make sure you put it together right. I accidentally assembled it for .223 but left the 9mm laser cap on it. It got stuck in the chamber and after we got it out of the AR the laser trainer was stuck together. It took a lot of work and a couple vice grips to get it apart but afterwards I was able to  assemble it the right way and “shoot” the AR. Later I tried it out in a brand new M&P-15 and the bolt had a little trouble closing on it. If you racked the charging handle and released the bolt it slam into battery with a little hiccup towards the end. It’s great for trigger control and practicing using a DA/SA or DAO gun. If you have a SAO gun the laser trainer doesn't have a rim on it so that you can rack the slide without having to reinsert it. The only issues I had with it were that the .40 S&W insert and 9mm laser cap were not marked, it fit snug in the M&P-15(not the other AR), and that I messed up assembling the .223 trainer. Overall this is a great package if you have multiple caliber pistols and something in .223(we all know I mean an AR-15).

Radetec Ammo Control Digital Counter for 1911

Have you ever wanted instant feedback from your pistol, just like the interface of a first person shooter video game? In almost every FPS that tries to mimic real gunfire with realistic guns, there is a HUD (heads up display) that gives the player data on how many rounds are left in their character's magazine (or clip!) Now there is a product that brings that interactivity into the realm of real firearms, and its called the Radetec Ammo Control Digital Counter by Radetec, and this particular model is for the 1911.

Designed to enhance firearm control and efficiency, this electronic device provides real-time information about the amount of ammunition left in the magazine, as well as total rounds fired. Radetec's core business deals with research and development for the creation of new products for the international market. They specialize in the integration of electromechanical components and plastic polymers. With their own advanced prototyping machinery, they manufacture electronic circuits and plastic parts into innovative devices that meet specific needs in the medical, military and security sectors.

The Ammo Control Digital Counter didn't necessarily 'float my boat' at first, but after installing it to my Ruger SR1911c and emptying a few magazines instantly saw the draw. It's easy for some to scoff at the inability to perform basic addition (especially for 1911 owners, counting to seven) but after that first trigger pull, its very easy to forget or lose count of rounds fired downrange. Unless you were rigorously trained to maintain good shooting mechanics and count in your head, its surprisingly easy to screw up either while trying to do both. This product takes the counting out of the equation and gives immediate feedback, which not only is a good training aid but would serve well in the field in certain applications. Note that it only reads the capacity of the magazine and not what's in the chamber, so DO NOT rely on the grip's reading of "0" rounds in an empty mag to indicate a safe gun. Always check your chamber, folks.

Another plus is the secondary feature, which displays the total amount of rounds fired through the firearm while the grip has been installed. This allows users to not only keep a log of a gun's history, but keep track of what parts will need maintance after X many of rounds have been fired. For 150-200 dollars this is an investment for certain, however from a civilian/enthusiast's viewpoint I see this as a very interesting addition that gives John Browning's old warhorse a bit more of an edge.

FourSevens Maelstrom Regen MMR-X

The FourSevens MMR-X is another light in the family of quality products available from FourSevens. This platform is one of their larger offerings (though still pretty small for its level of light output) and is unique in the fact that it is rechargeable through a micro-USB cable. This would be an excellent duty-gear, truck, or nightstand light for nearly any consumer.

The MMR-X offers the ability to program the light from a series of 5 different options, including varying combinations of moonlight, low, high, max, strobe, beacon, and SOS. I found configuration 2 to fit my everyday needs best, allowing me to cycle between max and low depending on what I needed it for.

The MMR-X is powered by a proprietary 18650 lithium ion rechargeable battery; a non-FourSevens 18650 battery can be used, however certain features of the light are lost. At a replacement cost of $15 from FourSevens, there should be no need to use any other branded battery. For a multiuse rechargeable battery, I applaud FourSevens for not charging a ridiculous amount of money for a replacement. On max output the battery is listed to last 2 hours, although in testing I found it to last closer to 2.5 hours before seeing a significant reduction in brightness. From a full discharge, it took between 4-5 hours to recharge the flashlight to full capacity. A sealed micro-USB input is contained where the head meets the body and a small red or green light informs you of where your battery is at in the recharging process.

The light itself has a very nice fit and finish and has a nice aggressively scalloped bezel that can be used as an improvised striking tool if things got nasty; it would definitely leave a mark. For those who don’t want such an aggressive bezel, you are in luck because it also comes with a smooth bezel which easily screws on. In “burst” mode, the MMR-X powers out 800 lumens of light which is reduced to 400 lumens after 1 minute of continuous run time. In FourSevens fashion, the light comes with a few spare o-rings, a lanyard, and an alternate tail cap clicky and boot so the user can choose from a long click or a short click. Their 10 year no-hassle warranty also allows owners to rest assured they won’t need to spend any more of their hard-earned money on a replacement should anything go wrong.

The MMR-X is advertised to survive a 1 meter (3.2ft) drop which I feel is a little low. Under testing, the light survived a 3 meter (10ft.) fall on concrete. The light also survived an even larger fall at 6 meters (20ft.), but the battery did not. I can’t fault the battery for breaking at 20ft. because it is only advertised to 3ft., but I’d like to see more impact resistance in the future. It is certainly rugged enough for everyday use but having an extra 18650 battery around wouldn’t be a bad idea. The light performed well in water submersion tests, meaning that puddle and shallow lake drops won’t hurt this beast. It also operated properly after being subjected to freezing temperatures for 24 hours.

Overall this is an excellent light with various uses and the convenience of being rechargeable via any USB port. Replacement batteries, although proprietary (to use all functions of the light), are reasonably priced as well. In the future I’d like to see some ultra-impact survival lights from FourSevens, focused on the market of users who need a light to work no matter what they do to it. If FourSevens offered a fully potted model with some of their best features from their most popular flashlights, they would posture themselves to crush their competitors with functionality, reliability, and toughness.

There is not much to say about this product besides that fact that it works and fixes one of the only problems I’ve had with my 625 JM from Smith and Wesson. Utilizing moon clips on rimless cartridges in revolvers increase the reliability and ease of use. The standard procedure utilizes metal moonclips, and even with special loading and unloading tools can prove to be a hassle. Don’t get me wrong, these moonclips cannot replace standard metal moonclips for defensive or competitive applications. These moonclips however will greatly improve the ease of use and will certainly save you some troubles.

Sunwayman V20c Tactical Flashlight Review

I was turned on to Sunwayman flashlights by a friend of mine who had a similar model. I was looking for a good flashlight and I liked his. When I started looking at flashlights, I had issue with the multiple click programming to change brightness. Then I found the V20c, the button on the back just turns the light on and off. It has a collar behind the light head that changes the brightness from 0 to 430 lumens and strobe. I carry this flashlight everyday, at home and at work. I purchased two 18650 3000mah rechargeable batteries. I try and swap them out the 1st of the month so i always have a good battery. I have been running this light for over a year and have no complaints. I comes with a fairly well made canvass holster with a velcro enclosure. The belt loop is both permanently attached and velcro attached which allows you to put it on your belt without removing your belt.

Eagle Industries Chest Rig M4 Molle LE Style

Whether you are a competitor or a first responder, you need a way to carry magazines and essential gear securely and in a position thats quickest and easiest to access.  For me, I need a chest rig for competitions that require multiple guns. Where I live, the matches are usually scheduled for the spring or summer with a desert environment, so its hot and dry. Full molle vests are a bit overkill I've found, as they tend to hinder range of motion, and some stages only require 2-3 carbine magazines and 4-6 pistol magazines.  I've found that using a simpler M4 chest rig is best.

Some call it a recon-style harness, others may refer to it as a "Rhodesian" chest rig. The one I use is an Eagle Industries Chest Rig M4 Molle LE Style (currently discontinued but newer models are available) and it is just enough to get me by.  With molle strapping on the left and right sides as well as over the top of the carbine magazine pouches, its perfect for adding handgun mag pouches. The pouches themselves are rigid, reinforced with some kind of thin composite board and then lined with a softer material for magazine retention without surface wear. The straps are adjustable and use large M style buckles.  They go over the shoulders and cross at the back and attach to the bottom of the rig on both sides. There is a single strap that goes laterally across the back and attaches via a smaller buckle.  I let it hang just below my pectorals. and am able to have 3 carbine mags with a pair of pistol mags on each side via molle pouches for a total of 4 mags. Alternatively you could attach 3o round carbine mag pouches on either side to increase to capacity to 7 mags, and attach pistol mag pouches to the front of the rig's pouches.

The advantages to this style of chest rig are lightness of weight, ease of mobility, and simplicity of use. Another perk is the kangaroo pouch with a wide hook-and-loop mouth that is easy to access even with carbine mags holstered.  Its wide enough to stow more magazines, loose rounds, papers/documents, or a couple packs of beef jerky. I often will stash a couple of Glock 33rd magazines in the pouch for the longer, no-capacity limit stages.

BLACKHAWK! Sportster Standard CQC Holster for Glock Review

This holster was exactly what I needed for a 3 Gun event that snuck up on me unexpectedly.  I was able to find it at a local Walmart for $19.99, and after putting it through a competition I am very pleased with its simplicity and rigidity. It fit my custom Lone Wolf Distributors 'Timberwolf' Glock as well as my backup Glock 19.

The cut of the BLACKHAWK! Sportster Standard CQC holster comes right below the chamber of the barrel, making drawing and clearing the holster a split second faster than a holster that covered the whole slide.  This design also makes reholstering a breeze which also comes in handy in a multi-gun setting.

After putting this on a belt with all the pouches and other accessories for a competition, it fit right at home. I swapped the belt loop backing with the paddle hook option, as it followed the curve of my hip better and gave more support for me during stages where crawling, running, and climbing is involved. I'd like to think it helped my scores a little compared to running a drop-leg in the past, and it certainly made running easier which buys you time. For more casual use I will probably switch back to the belt loop, or just buy another holster and leave this on my comp-belt.

Crosman - Duty Calls Full Metal M4 Airsoft Gun (DCR75F)

In order to get a better perspective, I have reviewed the various parts of the Crosman Duty Calls Full Metal M4 Airsoft Gun (DCR75F), with the pro’s and con’s, if any.  The muzzle comes with your standard orange tip and is in great condition.  It did not hinder the accuracy of rifle shots during testing.  The charging handle can be pulled back, but is there only to allow access to the hop-up.  Other than that, it is mainly to give the rifle a more realistic feel to it.  The stock on the rifle is adjustable which makes it more versatile in different environments (outdoors or indoors).  No matter the arm length, you can rest assured that you will be able to adjust the stock for comfort and not have to sacrifice accuracy.  It is always nice to be able to enter a room or clear a corner without hitting something with the barrel of your gun.  There is a safety on the left side of the rifle which has the safety and two fire modes:  semi and auto.  I tend to be conservative with my shooting, so I found myself using the auto mode very little.  Many of the airsoft games that I have participated in would have a “semi only” restriction, so I have gotten used to that.

The trigger of the Crosman Duty Calls Full Metal M4 Airsoft Gun (DCR75F) is one of things that I found to be a little funky as far as operating properly.  When firing in “semi” mode, the rifle works just fine.  The BB’s fire with each trigger-pull without missing a beat.  However, when I tested the rifle in “auto” mode, the rifle would sometimes fire consistently and other times it would fire a single shot as if in “semi”.  It could be a wiring issue in this particular rifle that is causing the problem.  The magazine that came with the Crosman Duty Calls Full Metal M4 Airsoft Gun (DCR75F) is a nice 300 round high-capacity mag.  It has the wind-up wheel at the bottom that feeds the BB’s into the ready tube.  Unfortunately, this is another part that I found to

have issues.  When I loaded the BB’s and wound-up the wheel, the bb’s would not fire consistently.  Sometimes, I would have to pull the trigger 5-10 times before a bb finally shot out.  At first, I was thinking the rifle itself was jammed so I cleaned the barrel to make sure.  I still had issues firing BB’s.  When I switched to one of my mid-capacity magazines the rifle fired shots just fine.

The Crosman Duty Calls Full Metal M4 Airsoft Gun (DCR75F) also has front and rear-sights to assist with accurate shooting.   I have to say that this rifle is quite accurate.  The groupings of the shots were overall very consistent since the rifle is electric-powered and has no recoil.  I did not have to adjust the hop-up at all though the option is there if you want to adjust the distance of your shots.  Take note, however, that this rifle already shoots at the 300 FPS range (out-of-box).

As far as air soft rifles go, I have found the Crosman Duty Calls Full Metal M4 Airsoft gun DCR75F to be a nice, well-rounded weapon.  It has a good firing distance and the fire rate is quite good when I was able to get the “auto” mode working properly.  Other than the hi-cap magazine not feeding properly, this is a rifle that can hold its own with the other airsoft rifles out there.

The Voodoo Tactical 42" MOLLE Soft Rifle Case is an excellent product for numerous applications. It is useful for trips to the range, 3-gun matches or even hunting trips.  With enough storage for many accessories including rifles, pistols, ammunition, hearing and eye protection, magazines, or anything else one might want to take with them.  The case is well padded inside and out, even having padding around the edges where the heavy duty zippers are located.  Inside the case you will find a padded divider between the two rifle/shotgun compartments.  In each of these compartments are two velcro straps to hold the firearms secure.  On the exterior you will find three large pockets to hold magazines, ammo, etc.  Behind these pockets is a large zippered pouch that holds two pistols in their own padded pockets that velcro closed.  Every time I take a firearm or two anywhere, I find myself taking this case.  It is exceptionally built and just a great all around case.

FourSevens Atom AL

The FourSevens Atom AL is an ultra-compact every day carry (EDC) LED light with useful features and great value.  FourSevens is known for their ingenuity and quality products and the Atom AL is no different.  This light fits in the palm of your hand and is great for pocket, truck, or desk carry.

The Atom AL is advertised to run on CR123A batteries with 110 max lumens and 6 low lumens.  On low setting it can run for 40 hours and also runs for 3.5 hours on max.  It is also submersible down to 3 meters and can withstand an impact resistance of 1 meter for you clumsy types.  During a submersion test, the Atom AL continued to run with no issues when placed in a vat of water to simulate puddle or shallow lake water drops.  The light continued to run during the entire 30 minutes it was submersed for, and even heated the water for those of you who like to sip on warm water.  The light passed the 1 meter concrete drop test with no issues, and as a test of its limits it continued to work after a 6 meter (20ft) concrete drop test as well.  Its compact size and stout construction makes it like a bulldog of ultra-compact lights.  The manufacturer specifications don’t mention anything about operating temperatures, but 24 hours in a freezer didn’t stop this bulldog from shining like it would in normal temperatures.

The light is considered a “mule” meaning it has no mirrored reflector, resulting in a flood-like shallow and wide throw of light.  The area around the LED normally reserved for a reflector is coated with a glow in the dark substance, which is a unique feature allowing for quick locating if dropped or lost in the dark shortly after a recent use.  The beam has no “hot spot” and is useful in short and medium range distances.  The light has a low setting (6 lumens) and a high setting (110 lumens) accessible by twisting the light in one of two stages.  This simple user interface makes it easy to access either setting; this is a welcome change to some of FourSevens’ other more complex and sometimes confusing user interfaces.

The exterior is slightly “grippy” which allows for sweaty or cold hands to firmly grasp the light when twisting it on.  As a side note, out of the box the light was a little hard to twist with one-handed operation.  After cleaning the threads between the upper and lower portions of the light, it became much easier to operate.  The base of the light also contains a magnet allowing it to be affixed to any ferrous surface.  This magnet really comes into play during pocket carry because your car keys will stick to it, so just make sure you carry them in opposite pockets to avoid the hassle.  The magnet becomes the biggest benefit when the light is used in conjunction with the optional 360 degree headlamp kit available from FourSevens for only $15.  I tested this feature out as well and it makes for an excellent combination.  While wearing the headlamp and light combo kit might qualify you for the household geek of the year award, the convenience of the units together make the headlamp kit a must-have option.

The light comes from the factory with spare O-rings and a handy lanyard, which I think are nice touches.  Some people don’t like lights requiring more expensive CR123A batteries; these people are in luck because FourSevens also makes versions of this same light which handle AA, AAA, and CR2 batteries.

Ruger SR-22 Purple Frame

Every new shooter needs to experience the joy of a 22LR pistol.  The 22LR's reputation for lightest recoil and lightest pricetag (when available) offers hours of enjoyment and valuable understanding on how firearms function and proper handling.  For the significant loved one in your life - husband, wife, boyfriend, girlfriend, nephew/niece, child, grandchild - a 22LR is a fantastic tool to let them use at the range.

I stumbled across this "purple pea shooter" at a local gunshop and new it was only a matter of time before I picked it up for my significant other.  Her favorite color is purple, and I had already gotten her a Ruger 10/22 rifle with a purple painted stock.  This little Ruger seemed a perfect addition to her collection.  The timing of it being just before Valentine's Day made this gift even better.

She was of course was furious at seeing yet another white cardboard box with Ruger's emblem on the top, but was quickly overjoyed at learning it was her's. Our first range trip with the SR22 was very successful, it fed Remington Thunderbolt 22LR flawlessly and the groups were adequate with plenty of room for improvement.  I did experience some double feeding on the next trip to the firing line using Federal Match ammo, I assume the feed ramp prefers round tip bullets over certain hollowpoint bullets, I will be sure to experiment with more as they show up on the shelves.

This 22LR has followed us to the range every time since purchasing it as its always enjoyable to shoot. Her comments are that the grip really felt good in her hand with the palm swell installed, and made the negligible recoil even lighter and follow-up shots easy to do. She was also a big fan of the hammer as it made it easy to know when it was ready to fire, and the safety disabling the hammer was very useful for when stopping between shots.

While it's not the best in any category, it is a solid and well constructed pistol that is certainly worth the mid-range pricetag of $320 that I got it for.  With is safety features that are easy to manipulate but also help ensure correct handling is used, this pistol is ideal for new shooters.

- Seems picky with ammo, ate up Remington Lightning but choked on Federal Match. - Magazine release is mushy to me, could be easier to actuate. - Picatinny rail has smaller slots and shallower than most polymer frames in my safe.  Certain accessories may not mount. -Trigger reset length is terrible, not a good tool for teaching accurate handgun shooting.

BLACKHAWK! Hellstorm Special Operations Goggles

What can I say about the BLACKHAWK! Hellstorm Special Operations Goggles except that they are amazing.  BLACKHAWK! quality and durability shine through once again on these goggles.  Pair all that with the budget friendly price point and you have a winning product all around.  I have put these goggles through their riggers both on the job and off.  In February of 2014, the north-east was hit with a big snow storm.  I wore these goggles snow blowing thinking that the combination of my body heat and moisture would surely fog them up.  I was wrong.  Blackhawk's upper/lower ventilation along with the anti-fog lenses worked exactly as designed and I had perfect vision the entire time.  My only complaint about the goggles is a minor one.  As you can see in the pic below, the head strap is a bit wide.  Depending on how you position the strap around you head, the strap can feel a bit odd around your ears area.

Gut Level Gear - Holster Review

I had decided to take a low light handgun class this year and wanted to train with both weapon mounted and handheld flashlights. This put me on the search for a holster for my M&P 9 and a tlr-1s Streamlight. Luckily for me, the Gut Level Gear Holster came on line. After looking over the product line, I decided to order one up from Steve Griffin the owner.  A little background on Steve. Steve served in the Army for 11 years, a police officer for 20 years and has shot in various forms of competition for over 30 years. That's quite a resume for making a holster that truly works. The years of serving the public as a police officer probably aids in his ability to listen and evaluate your needs for your holster.

On to my holster. I decided on a Guardian Kydex outside the waistband holster. This holster is offered with or without light and with a few different mounting options. You can choose from tek-loc, Safariland ELS or belt slide. I chose the belt slide which seems to work the best for me. Fit and finish were great, granted its not hand tooled leather but nice none the less. Its a clamshell design with two tension screws on trigger guard side. There is no distortion in the bend and all edges are clean and smooth. Belt slide mounting hardware is well away from the gun so no worries of contact. Retention is on the flashlight, mine was perfect no adjustment needed. I carried the empty holster to work for almost two weeks, and gun and holster for 3 weekends. Overall impressions were great. It was well balanced, tucked close to the body and rock solid. Draws were quick and re-holstering was easy. His experience shows through in quality and practicality. The M&P with the light is not my daily carry, but could be thrown into rotation anytime with this holster. I'm definitely ready for my classes now.

The quality of work and customer care are top notch. I've since gone back for 2 more, 1 of which was a custom holster for my 2.5" Crimson Trace S&W 642. Highly recommend, its where I spend my money now for Kydex holsters.

Cold Steel Master Tanto

There are some brands that when you hear the name you automatically think, “its gotta be good!”, and Cold Steel has always been on that list for me.  When I was about 16 years old my grandfather passed down a fixed blade Cold steel Master Tanto that he had taken in a gun trade years ago.  The funny thing is, it was my dad's partners knife on the police force years earlier.  Boy... were there stories about this knife that I now hold in my hand. Stories of prying open car doors, among MANY other tasks that I would never dream of putting a blade through! But all that aside, this knife still looks like it has been carefully cared for it’s entire life.

It features a Kray-Ex™  space age rubber like material for the handle and  a six inch VG-1 San Mai III® blade.  the blade is super hard steel on the outer edge but seems to have a softer steel in the middle, which makes sharpening to a razors edge pretty easy to do...even for an amateur knife sharpener as myself. The fixed blade goes all the way through the handle and has a shiny brass hilt.

There really isn't much more to say about this awesome blade than….. IT WORKS! It’s super sharp, holds an edge like a champ, it’s there for fine cuts such as trimming meat, or hacking a leg bone off a wild turkey when cleaning it with one swift whack.  This knife has been around for well over 20 years and I suspect the one I hold in my hand will be around for quite a few more years. The Master Tanto comes with a fairly hefty price tag in a market flooded with cheap knives but there's one thing for sure, its quality will outlast a dozen of the cheapies.  I have ONE complaint… the leather sheath it comes with has a poor design belt loop and Velcro strap...but they do sell a hard concealex sheath and I would advise getting one!
