Crew Holsters "OL' Classic OWB" Holster

The Crew Custom Holsters OL' Classic OWB is your standard outside the waistband holster.  It is manufactured from some nice heavyweight kydex or similar plastic.  The one I received is for a full size 1911 style pistol.  It arrived in black.  I tried it with 2 different 1911's and it functioned flawlessly.

The design of the holster would make it very useful for everyday carry, IDPA, hunting, or any other thing you might want an outside the waistband holster for.  The belt loops supplied fit my 1.5" belt nicely.  The loops are also kydex, and are very deep, meaning that a really thick belt, or one of the double competition style belts, will fit through the loops.  The loops can also be adjusted up or down on each side.  This way, the holster can be lowered, raised, or adjusted for cant.  Being that it is for a 1911, the inside sheet of kydex came up just to the safety lever.  The outside piece is a little lower to help you get a good grip when drawing.  This model OWB holster also covers the trigger guard completely.  It is also molded around the mag release button so that it can't be hit accidentally.  Some of the owb models have adjustable retention, this one does not.  I didn't find this to be a problem, as the holster retained the firearm nicely.  The draw stroke is also very smooth. Upon reholstering, you do get a good "snap" as the holster locks the gun in place.  I did notice that it took a few draw strokes to break in the holster, as it was very snug when I first received it.

This holster is really nice.  It is available in lots of colors and patterns, for a few extra bucks.  There are also options for weapon mounted lights and lasers.  Various belt clip options are also available, as well as a sweat guard, if one wishes.  The only flaw I found with this particular model was that, with one of my 1911's, the safety would just touch the holster so that the firearm would not go in completely.  I mean by maybe an 1/8".  So I just filed that spot down slightly and it worked great.  I called The Crew Holsters about this and they said I could send it in for them to fix, because it does have a lifetime warranty.  They said they would look at the problem and I doubt that it exists anymore.  If you're in the market for a good kydex style holster, give the Crew a call.

Warne R.A.M.P. Scope Mount Review

The Warne R.A.M.P mount is a 1 piece scope mount for AR-15 style rifles, or any rifle that has a picatinny rail and needs a forward mounted optic.  R.A.M.P stands for Rapid Acquisition Multi-Sight Platform. It gets the multi-sight part because besides having built in rings, it also has 2 45degree angled mounts.  These mounts allow you to install a small red dot sight on one of the canted rails.  One could mount Iron sights on these also, but would then need the optional mount for the front sight to attach on.  The RAMP mount comes in three sizes for most needs: 1inch, 30mm, and 34mm.  I have the 1" version, but they are all essentially the same.

The 45 degree mounts are really what sets this mount ahead of its competition.  With the ability to mount something small on either the left or right side of the scope, it will appeal to both left and right hand shooters.  If you decide not to use one side or the other, or neither, the angled mounts are removable with 2 socket head screws on each.  Because of the added mounts, and space to attach the mounts, it is not the lightest mount out on the market.

Another nice feature on the RAMP mount is the 1/2" hex screws on the mounting base.  They are to be torqued to no more than 65in/lbs.  Also a torx style allen wrench is supplied to tighten down the top of the scope rings. There are 2 T-15 torx screws per side and should be tightened in an x pattern.

I really like the RAMP mount.  It puts the scope at the correct height and the proper eye relief.  With the option of adding a small red dot if one desires. The only negative I can see with the mount is the weight, but it is a very sturdy mount.  If you are in the market for this style mount, you cant go wrong with the Warne RAMP.

A little heavy (even with the side mounts removed) if you're not going to use the 45 degree option, otherwise typical Warne quality, which is the best I've found out there. Only warning I'd give is to do some research before buying this-- will your Mini-Red Dod Sight clear the bell of your primary scope? Ironically, I think the perfect use of this scope with a 45 degree mount would be on a monolithic receiver (think SCAR) and the mount backwards. Height is perfect. If you don't foresee yourself ever using the side mounts, I would recommend going with the Warne SKEL mount, which is the same mount as this minus the extra attachments, thus reducing weight significantly.

Alien Gear Cloak Tuck 3.0 IWB Holster

Following up on my past review of the Alien Gear Cloak Tuck 2.0 Holster, I requested the newest evolution to the extraterrestrial themed holster line, the Cloak Tuck 3.0 Holster. I gave the Cloak Tuck 2.0 IWB holster a rating of 6.5 out of 10, as it was a uniquely comfortable holster, but had some odd flaws that should probably have been thought out better. The cons I found with the 2.0 holster was the generous flexibility of the backing would cause the slide to come out of battery when reholstering at a wrong angle, instead of guiding it into position like a more rigid leather backing. The neoprene material was soft and comfortable, but the smooth front surface lacked enough friction to really hold the gun snuggly. Another big complaint was the exposed hardware on the back that would contact the skin and cause slight discomfort. The cant adjustment hardware also was exposed on the front and would wear the fabric of your pants. No bueno! But it was apparent Alien Gear was onto something, as many users still raved the 2.0 holster.

The quest for engineering a superbly comfortable, yet functionally supportive IWB holster is a tough egg to crack. Many IWB carriers are simply content with their leather backed holster, and pretend its comfortable when in reality it feels pretty noticeable on the hip or has a bulky profile that prints through the pants or shirt. Alien Gear's cloak tuck line has gone through a several design and engineering phases, from a high quality leather backing in the first version, to the cloak tuck 2.0 and it's neoprene covered ABS polymer core. In this third creation, Alien Gear has found much more than a compromise.

The Cloak Tuck 3.0 doesn't compromise in comfort at all. In fact, its even more comfortable than the 2.0, which many users raved about it's almost nonexistent presence on the belt. The neoprene backing is just a soft, and now it covers the unsightly hardware T screws. No more will body hair get snagged and pulled! To boot, there is now only one set of cant adjustment screws, that you can simply unscrew and reposition however you like using the supplied allen screw. I can't really think of a reason why there were two sets of unused and exposed screws on the 2.0 holster, but thankfully they're gone!

The biggest improvement to the design is on the inside, beneath the neoprene fabric. Instead of an ABS core, there is now a stainless spring steel backbone dow that is only big enough to anchor the gun shell itself. The wings of the holster still remain very flexible, bendable to a full 180 degrees without tearing, breaking or stretching anything. So now not only does the handgun have a more rigid but flexible support backing, but the winged tabs are free to flex along your belt-line more freely. The backing carries the same combat cut as the previous models, and it has the same flexibility as the wings so no matter your body type or degree of muffin top, this holster wouldn't feel any more comfortable unless it was made of Charmin Ultra Soft.

Another new addition to the Cloak Tuck 3.0 has a new skin. Specifically called "Alien Skin," the front surface of the holster now has a thermoelastic layered thats textured almost like a reptile. The new texture adds drag to the retention of the pistol, which was lacking in the 2.0's smooth surface. Also the Alien Skin has the logo and made in USA flag molded right into it, which looks much more professional than the silver paint on the last version.

Nothing's changed as far as the clips and handgun shell, they are exactly the same as before... well expect now you can get a Viridian reactor model that activates the laser upon draw. As for the belt clips, you can choose from a number of clips including black steel clips, standard nylon clips, polymer injected "J" clips or "C" clips, black leather loops, tan leather loops, or as a combo of black leather loops and either "J" clips or "C" clips, or tan leather loops and either clips. The "J" clips come up over the pant and hook just underneath the belt, and the "C" Clips hook over the top and bottom edge of the belt. These two styles are supposed to be more discreet when you have your shirt tucked in, as any full size clip showing over the top of a belt when the shirt is tucked is really a dead giveaway. It's what I look for first if I'm playing the "spot who's carrying" game. The black or tan leather loops are intended to "blend" against your black or tan dress belt for more discretion as well.

My review score for the Cloak Tuck 3.0 goes up to solid 9.0, with a high probability of it meeting a 9.5 rating after further testing to be sure the stitching and overall finesse holds up over time. Bottom line, this is the most comfortable inside the waistband holster on the market... regardless of price point. While there are comfortable options out there, you won't find one that beats the price of the Alien Gear Cloak Tuck 3.0 holster. Easily affordable, easily adjustable for cant and retention, and easily forgettable when wearing unless you bend or contort. I wish I could say they paid me for a glowing review, but the fact is this is just a damned good holster. The branding of Alien Gear is alittle oddball with the whole little green man and UFOs on the website, but its hard to dispute their claim that this is "the most comfortable holster on Earth," or at least until the Cloak Tuck 4.0 holster comes out.

Bravo Concealment RTT Holster Combo Pack

I remember listening to a podcast back when I first became a gun owner, and one of the hosts jokingly claimed that when you become a concealed carrier, you are almost guaranteed to have a drawer full of holsters at some point. Sure enough I can support that claim now that I have multiple handguns, each of them needing a holster for inside the waistband (IWB) or outside the waistband (OWB) carry. Add in a mounted weapon light, and thats another set of holsters. The good news is many other gun owners have the same problem, and kydex holster companies have attempted convertible holsters that can easily be swapped between OWB and IWB.

One such holster is the RTT Holster from Bravo Concealment. Available in a combo pack that includes both IWB and OWB belt clips for either training or competition use, or carrying concealed inside the waistband. The combo pack also includes kydex magazine holsters, either as two single mag pouches or one double mag pouch.  The RTT holster is designed to fulfill most of the requirements for a defensive pistol class setting, all for one solid price.

The RTT Holster gets it's name from Range Time-Tactical Shooting, LLC. You maybe more familiar with their YouTube Channel of gear reviews and training promo vids. The RTT Holster Combo Pack is marketed as the gear package ideal for taking a RTT Defensive Pistol Class. Bravo Concealment offers the RTT holster separately as a lightbearing or plain standalone holster for $74.99 if you already have mag pouches you prefer to run in the classroom or competition, as well as the standalone magazine holsters as either double, or two single magazine pouches.

 In wearing the RTT holster and mag pouches around the farm for a week with my Smith & Wesson M&P357c w/ Streamlight TLR3, I really appreciate the robust construction and the hand-fitted care that when into the components. The inward curve of the belt loops on the holster and pouches fits the natural curve of the body as well as provides good friction against the belt, so your rig wont be sliding around your waistline all day.

The advantage to selecting two single mag pouches is the flexibility on the belt, you can either place both side by side on the support hand side, just one, or mix it up to fit your training scenario. There is an option to have the bottom edge of the kydex pouch cut slanted to allow for better mobility during pronating or crouching exercises. Another great feature Bravo Concealment puts into these mag pouches is a tensioning screw just to the right edge of the magazine that can be tightened or loosened with a screwdriver. Most holster makers will tell you to heat up the kydex to be pliable enough for manually reforming, but its nice to see this maintenance step simplified into the engineering of the mag pouches. Logically they will be used more frequently that the main handgun holster during courses of fire (unless your only practicing your drawing mechanics) so its nice to able to adjust the tension on the fly.

The RTT holster itself is an all around good OWB holster. Strictly speaking, outside the waistband kydex holsters all sort of look the same. The key differences between them to me are the cut and the clips. By cut, I mean the top opening of the holster. There's a balance thats needed in order to protect the trigger guard yet expose the magazine release, as well as leaving adequate clearance for the gripping hand's fingers to get a full, firm purchase on the handgun's grip... especially under duress. Several draw-strokes under standing, sitting, and kneeling positions were all positive in my testing.

The clips, or belt loops in this case, are what I would consider and great choice for OWB carry and training scenarios. Instead of using actual clips that would allow the holster to be attached or removed without unfastening the belt, Bravo uses polymer injection molded belt loops. These require the belt to be threaded through the loops at the same time as your pant belt loops, unless you run an exterior tactical belt which of course is possible by selecting one of the 1.5" - 2" belt width options on the Bravo concealment website. These loops are really ideal for heavy duty drills and generally harder use than other style clips, as they will withstand more stress from drawing and reholstering forces. I've seen other OWB kydex holsters on the market with thinner belt loops cut from the same kydex sheet and I was never really impressed by their thinness and sharp edges. Also a note: Bravo offers pancake-style belt loops separately.

This brings me to the IWB capability of the RTT Holster, which for me did not go well. My real only issue with this holster as an IWB option is it was very uncomfortable for a shooter my size.  I carried it in the 4 o'clock position like I'm accustomed to carrying with other IWB holster types, and just feels like a huge hard object not conforming to my hip at all. For context. my build is north of 220lbs, and the holsters I usually wear for CCW are leather backed with a half kydex shell.  I've tried adjusting the RTT to an appendix carry position, and an almost 5-6 o'clock position to reduce the direct pressure on my hip with some relief, but still just not feasible for me unless 5.11 decides to make tactical sweatpants.

Now take note, if you have a slimmer body type, this holster should ride better on your hip. However with that said, I also found difficulty with the IWB soft clips themselves as they interfere with the drawing hand. Even with the clips mounted at their lowest position on the holster's grommets and adjusted for a 1.25" width belt, there wasn't enough clearance for my fingers when drawing the weapon, and I by no means have sausage fingers! My second grievance is they are tricky to loop under the belt and snap with one hand or without looking. I'm not sure why the button snaps themselves were so difficult either, but I wasn't able to figure out how to snap them correctly in one attempt. These are just not working for me, but it is worth noting that Bravo Concealment also sells polymer injection molded IWB belt clips that would be preferable in my opinion over these soft belt clips.

All in all, I would certainly recommend getting the RTT Holster Combo Pack if you wanted a starter's kit for training courses or competitive shooting events, especially if you wanted to retain a mounted weapon light on your gun using an outside the waistband holster. If your class / competition requirements include a IWB holster and you are confident this style of holster will fit inside your pants, I would say get the 1.5" or 1.75" IWB belt loops instead of the soft clips. The gear is solid, and the customer service at Bravo Concealment is on point. Now get your gear and hit the range!

CRKT Triumph Folder

Everyone should have a good folding knife.  And it seems I am always looking for something that fills that bill.  Well I came across the Columbia River Knife & Tool (CRKT) Triumph non-assisted opening knife.  The Triumph is designed by knife maker Pat Crawford.  It seems that CRKT may be discontinuing the non-assisted version, because they are discounted on their website.  This particular knife may be on the large side for some people, weighing in at 6.3 ounces.  But with some of the features it has, I couldn't wait to try it out. The Triumph is a full featured knife.  Starting with the AUS 8 stainless steel blade.  It is a dual ground Tanto style with a false top edge.  The false top edge and tanto blade design give the knife good puncturing abilities.  You can get the Triumph with or without Veff serrations.  This one has no serrations.  The blade is held out with a single .100" locking liner and the knife also has CRKT's AutoLAWKS safety.  AutoLAWKS is a spring loaded lock that engages once the knife is fully opened.  This feature helps to keep the locking liner in place and supposedly makes it almost as strong as a fixed blade.  When closing the Triumph, one must first move the autolawk out of the way with a finger, and while holding the lock back, push the liner over, and then close the blade slightly.  Once the blade has moved, you can then release the lock and fold the knife in as normal.  It takes a little bit to get use to, but I don't even notice it anymore.

Another nice feature about the Triumph is its G-10 handles.  This handle offers one of the grippiest I have ever used.  Water, mud, and oil don't seem to make it any different either.  When inserting or removing the knife from your pants, it can be difficult because the texture of the grip makes it seem like you wrapped it in sandpaper.  The clip on the knife is removable, but it only has one position.  That position is tip down, so if you like tip up carry look elsewhere for your knife.  The clip is very strong and keeps the Triumph in place throughout the day.

Like I said previously, the knife is large.  Coming in at 5" closed and 8.5" open.  The Tanto style blade is 3.5" long and .14" thick at its spine.  The knife I have has a tiger stripe camo coating on the blade, with black handles.  Different blade designs and handle colors are offered.  CRKT also makes the Triumph in an assisted opening, or a fixed kneck knife.  I have cut many things with this knife and the edge seems to hold up very well and I am pleased with the quality.

Crawford designs made this knife out of quality parts and materials, each knife is handmade and is all around a balanced, high quality knife. the grip on this knife is also very unique, feeling more like fine sandpaper this knife has a pleasing texture and you wont loose your grip even if you tried. downside of the blade is the effort it takes to sharpen it, with serrations like this it may be a challenge to sharpen but I believe that can easily be worked around,

Allen Company Recon Tactical Backpack

Technically, all backpacks could be considered tactical. After all, tactical means "of or relating to a maneuver or plan of action designed as an expedient toward gaining a desired end or temporary advantage." Having an efficient storage solution that can easily be carried on one's person is a pretty distinct advantage over say, a plastic grocery bag or just your pant pockets. Heck, even a bindle (picture the classic cartoon hobo with a sack tied to a stick) is a human invention that could be considered a distinct advantage for carrying your stuff. What I'm getting at, is when a product is marketed as "tactical" I try to focus on what it does that provides a distinct advantage over the other products in it's category. 

There are plenty of "tactical" backpacks out there, and typically the quality and capacity improves the higher the price point. If you are looking for a dependable bug-out bag or EDC bag that will outlast the zombie apocalypse (heavy sarcasm) then you may be in the $200+ range. There are some of us who are just looking for a fairly inexpensive bag that has expanded useful features, as well as looks cool. After all, the first rule of Tactical is if you aren't looking cool, you are doing it wrong. Or so I've been told! In shopping for an inexpensive tactical backpack that would serve well during day outings or travel, I found the Allen Company Recon Tactical Backpack. For only $25 it seemed like a decent pack that was casual but looked the part. Black: check. MOLLE webbing: check. Hook & Loop panel for the sweet PVC morale patches from Patriot Patch Co.: check!

It has 3 zippered compartments ranging in size. The largest main compartment has a partition sleeve that holds either a laptop or tablet device,  textbook or magazines (the reading kind) or even a hydration bladder, with a covered port in the top where the bladder's drinking tube can come through and then be secured to the strap. Outside of the aforementioned sleeve theres room for loosely putting anything else, a small jacket or several ham sandwiches. There was clearly room to accommodate more pouches, pockets or an interior MOLLE system but Allen left is pretty minimalistic and bare here, which I guess is why it's under thirty bucks.

The second compartment has more to offer as far as utility, and short leashed keyring, admin/paper pocket, and some smaller stitched pockets for pens or smaller items. The third forward most zippered pocket located directly behind the front MOLLE webbing is completely bare, just  big enough for a small book or two magazines (the shooting kind). Once again, pretty bare minimum and really not useful as a range bag, bugout bag, or survival bag.

The exterior has MOLLE webbing on the front, sides, and sling of the pack so you can expand the pack with your own tactical accessories. A dump pouch or admin pouch would go along with the whole traveling student role. You could be "that guy" and put pistol mag pouches on the sling and sides, but it wouldn't earn you many credibility points at the gun show. There is a synch-able net pouch for a water bottle on the wearer's right side, and a slim, narrow zippered pocket on the left that will hold a couple energy bars.

The comfort of the Recon Tactical Backpack is what's the real hero of its price point, as the back panel and the single sling are padded as well as slightly aerated for reducing sweat spots after wearing it all day. It is a single sling design like a messenger bag / backpack hybrid, so if you weigh it down with heavy contents (ie: dozens of manufacturer catalogs from SHOT Show) you will definitely feel it in your left shoulder after awhile. The downside to hybrid single strap bags like this is the inability to switch shoulders to reduce that fatigue if your pack is too heavy. There is a smaller strap with plastic M-buckle  on the right side which snaps into the main shoulder strap to keep the bag from shifting around, and that helps stabilize the load.

In all honesty, I bought this bag from a local gun shop the week before SHOT Show 2015 because I didn't have the time or budget for a more expensive and comprehensive backpack, and I thought a more minimal pack would be useful with all the other camera and recording equipment slung over my shoulder. I quickly found out how overloading the pack with heavy magazines and catalogs lead to pain at the end of a whole day spent on the showroom floor, and I really wished I had anted up for a more conventional double shoulder strap bag with better use of its interior space. If it had better use of internal space with more pockets or pouches on the inside, you wouldn't need to snap on more MOLLE pouches on the outside. Admitting all that, I would still vouch for the Recon Tactical Backpack for a student or just someone on the go looking to travel light but still have some "tactical" features. If you are looking for a full capacity backpack with more features and double straps like a 5.11 pack but more affordable, don't hesitate to check out Allen Company's other tactical backpacks.

WGM-15 Carbine

The proliferation of the AR-15 rifle in every color, configuration and price point has left us with an over-saturated market. The most basic, bone stock, plain jane black rifles can be had for around 5 Hamiltons... heck, I can pick them up at Walmart all day long.  Unfortunately, they are for the most part all carbon copies of each other. Forged receivers, A2 birdcage flash hiders, and whatever furniture could be had at wholesale and slapped together on the factory line. Luckily for the distinguished (or professional) shooter, there are passionate rifle builders out there who continue designing and hand assembling finer AR-15 rifles that would make Eugene Stoner proud.

I recently received a carbine from WGM Tactical out of California to put to the test. WGM is a Type 07, Class 02 SOT FFL and manufacturer of AR15 style rifles, sound suppressors, AOWs, custom precision long range rifles, and gunsmithing service. I applaud them for enduring behind enemy lines and giving the gun control crowd nightmares by producing awesome 100% made in America black rifles.

The literature from WGM Tactical paints a pretty accurate picture of their vision and goals: "In todays market, a number of manufacturers use the term ‘mil-spec’, short for military specification. Why? Because everyone is under the impression, if the military uses it, it’s good enough for me. Fact is, ‘mil-spec’ simply means it is the bare minimum that the military will accept for a certain product. Here at WGM Tactical, we believe in going above and beyond, which is why our products are above 'mil -spec’. We believe in giving our customers a superior product. Each and every component is manufactured in the USA, and hand assembled and inspected by us. Which is why WGM Tactical warranties every rifle for any defects in materials or workmanship at no charge to the purchaser for the life of the product."  

The carbine comes as a sweet package in a Plano tactical case. Inside I found the WGM-15 carbine, OTIS cleaning kit, a QD sling, 2 Hexmag magazines, LULA Mag-loader, & eye and ear pro. Everything but the kitchen sink and ammo to shoot it with. The case itself has been plucked 'n pulled to fit each accessory which made running out to the range a breeze. No excuses to not go out and get some!

The first thing I noticed when I picked up the carbine was it's stout weight. The slab-sided billet receivers (which fit very snug together thanks to a tension screw), HBAR barrel, billet receivers and freefloat handguard make the balance seem heavy at first, but weighed in at only 7.4 lb total. The WGM-15 is 'huskier' than most AR-15s but the provided sling, hogue overmolded grip, stock and rubber keymod port covers keep the contact points between the shooter and the rifle pleasant. The weight also comes into play in the recoil of the rifle itself, or lack thereof.  The iron sights that come with the rifle are flip up style, which compliment the installation of any optic of your choice. The horseshoe front sight hood makes alignment with the rear aperture quick and instinctual. Utilizing only the flip-up iron sights, I was able to hit 8" steel plates easily with the lead splattered groupings staying close to the center.

The Allen Engineering muzzle brake did a phenomenal job at improving stability and cutting muzzle rise down almost completely. Slow fire of singles, as well as doubles and triples were very controllable and easy to keep the sights glued on target. The sharper readers may recognize it as the Ops-Inc 12th model, MK12 SPR, as seen from the 'Lone Survivor' movie. Unfortunately the .30 cal can I have is not compatible with the Allen, but the muzzle brake's mount half can be removed to expose the barrel's 1/2 x 18 threads. Having an AE suppressor would be ideal as you just unscrew the bushing and an Allen suppressor could be threaded on without tools or removing the muzzle brake. Makes me wish the NFA fairy would visit more often!

Being a California specific model, this specific WGM-15 came with the notorious bane of all gun owner's existences known as the "bullet button." Okay it's not really that bad, but makes you glad your current state of residence hasn't taken up a similar limitation (yet). To perfectly compliment the bullet button, the Hexmags WGM sent over also had 10 round limiters in them. Not only do reloads take twice as long, but the mags empty 3 times as fast. Thankfully I had some standard capacity Pmags to help boost that round count so I didn't get home too late.

Speaking of round count, this WGM-15 has been a naughty girl. Before my date with her, she's had 9,500 rounds fired without a single cleaning or drop of lube (other than the first lubrication at assembly). I've never been with a rifle with this much... experience. The previous shooting sessions used ammunition ranging from wolf, military surplus, match grade and custom loads. Rapid fire, slow fire, and suppressed. WGM told me that they only have one report of a misfeed (attributed that to his magazines) and one report of a stuck case at about 6,000 rounds that has not replicated itself yet.  Their goal is to not clean or lube the rifle until it simply will no longer function. Now that's something I can get behind!

The trigger on this WGM-15 was a vast improvement from most AR's single stage triggers. The 4lb setting breaks cleanly and the reset is shorter than what I'm used to, which made for quick follow up shots. I tested the rifle using exclusively American Eagle 55gr FMJ in my testing, which is all I had an abundance of. I fired a total of 300 rounds over the course of two days. Like I previously mentioned, that bullet button and CAstrated magazines slow things down a bit, but I didn't experience any malfunctions while setting that round count up to 9,800. The barrel, handguard, and rifle overall got very warm, partly due to the beaming sun. Smart men bring gloves to range day.

My overall final impressions of this carbine are thats it's a battle-worthy improvement over the 'mil-spec' mass produced AR-15 pattern rifles out there. The tolerances are all superb, and the components built and chosen add up to a rugged, improved evolution of America's favorite black rifle. If you are looking for a true beast in .223/5.56 thats not all marketing hype and lego parts, take a closer look at what WGM Tactical is building behind enemy occupied territory.

Crew Holsters "Shadow" IWB Holster

I received the Shadow holster from "The Crew Custom Holsters" some time ago.  The Shadow is a kydex clam shell style inside the waistband (IWB) holster.  I have been wearing the Shadow for a while to try it out.  It is comfortable for a kydex style holster.  The model I received was in black, but they offer lots of different color and pattern options.  They also offer the Shadow for light or laser mounted firearms and tons of different models of firearms.  You can wear it just about anywhere from appendix all the way around to about 5 o'clock.  I typically wear it around the 3:30 position.  It seems to conceal the firearm well, as my children and wife did not notice me wearing it.  One big advantage this holster has over others is that it can be canted frontwards or even backwards.  There are different holes where the clip is located to adjust it to Zero, 15, or 45 degrees.  I tried it in all 3 positions and found that the zero and 15 worked best.  The 45 degree cant seemed strange, but someone may have a use for it.  The fit and finish of the holster are very good. They smooth the edges out and try to eliminate any sharp surfaces.  Mine is for a Kahr CM9 and it fits nicely and, with the adjustable retention, holds the pistol well.  The holster does collapse a small amount when there is no firearm in it.  It didn't seem to collapse enough to make reholstering difficult, but I did notice it.  I usually wear a hybrid style holster, but have found that with this little holster, the single clip makes it ideal to slip on and off easily.  If I need to run to the store at night or something similar, I can just grab this holster and clip it inside my waistband with no problems.  The Shadow is a very nice, convenient holster.  They will also do custom one off holsters if asked.

When looking at a means to protect your technological investment, it is a balancing act. One must find their individual balance between; protection, maintaining the functionality of original device, and style. When I received the Folio from Urban Armor Gear, I was highly impressed with how they balanced the three points. The style is masculine bold yet refined, the increased water resistance and drop protection is great, and you can still access all ports and what few buttons an iPad has with ease.

This case is great and the built in stand utilizes grooves in the screen cover to prop the iPad vs other cases that use a trifold cover or bulkier methods.

A coat hanger… Not that exciting, except this isn’t your normal coat hanger. It’s been designed specifically for plate carrier/body armor. You can use it for other heavy gear, anything that has straps. You could hang ropes up. Or even pull ups with its over 150lbs weight rating.

Much like everything that’s great, it was born out of necessity. An Army veteran came up with the idea for this because all of the alternatives weren’t cutting it. He put his product on kickstarter and raised over $17,000 of his $11,000 goal. Clearly he wasn’t the only one who thought it was a good idea.

After talking to my friend who’s a veteran, it seems the go to for storing body armor is either in a corner on the floor or tape three coat hangers together to hang it up. On top of being over engineered with its tough I-Beam construction, it has flared ends to keep shoulder straps from falling off.

“That’s all cool but what about carrying to my car, or wherever I’m gonna move it to?” you might ask. They’ve got you covered. Instead is having to hold onto the hook with all that weight they’ve integrated a handle on the underside of the hanger. And because of that, it's usefulness doesn't end at the closet. You can use it to carry your gear to the car, range, work, or wherever you think you want it at. All you have to do is spin the hanger inside the vest and you have a nice, wide grip to carry it with. It’s just like carrying a briefcase, except it contains SAPI plates instead of documents.

The only thing I wished this had was an accessory hook. As it is, you’d just have to put your ears or gloves on your vest or in a dump pouch.

Pelican MityLite 1960 LED

I am by no means a portable illumination connoisseur, but I seem to go through a flashlight about once every year. Either borrowed and never returned, lost, or broken, I never seem to have a flashlight handy when I need one. I'm not one for expensive name brand flashlights either, so you won't find any SureFire torches in my toolbox. That said, I always try to keep a handheld flashlight in my vehicle. Two is even better, with one being brighter than the other. The reason for this is if I'm ever broke down with a dead battery, especially at night, a flashlight is the most important tool to have. If you ain't got it, you're gonna be hurting. Even if I'm just digging around for something in the cab, under the seats, or helping someone under the hood... a light in your hand is your best friend.

The light I keep in my glovebox is the Pelican MityLite 1960 LED. I got this mini pocket light as a stocking stuffer for Christmas a couple years ago. Like the cases Pelican is better known for, this flashlight is watertight and dustproof.

With a runtime of only 3 hours on 2 AAA batteries, this flashlight is really better kept as a emergency light in the glovebox of your vehicle or in your pocket for casual illumination, NOT as an EDC carry flashlight. There are shorter, longer lasting lights with higher lumens that are better suited for checking out what's going bump in the night. However this lights underpowered lens helps in keeping you from blinding yourself when looking for your keys or that missing charger. It's rugged ABS body will take a beating like you'd expect from a Pelican product, so this makes a decent light in a pinch.

Bushnell AR 3-12x40 Scope

I purchased the Bushnell AR scope because I needed an optic for local 3-gun matches and varmint hunting. The scope had everything I was looking for at a very inexpensive price. I opted to purchase a Bushnell because I have not had any problems with any products that I have used from them. This includes some of their low end scopes and some higher end ones.

The scope was mounted on my AR in a Warne RAMP mount and it fit perfectly. Once sighted in,  I tried out the BDC reticle with some 55gr ammo. I was only able to try the drop compensators at 200 and 300yds, but they seemed to be accurate enough. The BDC is calibrated for your standard 55gr ammunition, but should also work adequately with 62gr ammo. The BDC reticle is to be zeroed at 100yds and then has dots for 200, 300, 400, & 500 yard drops. The 600 drop mark is where the line gets wider (think duplex reticle). I would have liked it better if Bushnell had put a dot at 600. I use heavier bullets and just plugged them into a ballistic program so that I know what the drops actually are in comparison.

This scope has some nice features. For one, it has resettable target turrets. Once sighted in, you can take the supplied allen wrench, loosen up the screw on the top of the turret, pull the knob up and turn to zero, and push it back down, then tighten up the allen screw. The AR series scopes also have a side parallax adjustment,  which is very nice when adjustment is needed while looking through the scope. I found the scope to be very clear for the price, especially at the lower settings. After adjusting past about 11x it gets a tiny bit blurry around the edges. The eye relief must be more precise at the higher magnification also. The reticle is calibrated at the highest (12x) magnification also, but I didn't have any problems seeing any targets at this magnification.

Now for the things I didn't like about this scope. It is heavy, weighing in at more than 21 ounces. It is definitely noticeable when mounted. The target turret clicks are a little bit mushy. But I really didn't expect any more at this price point. The scope is also long at 12". Not unmanageable, but it could be shorter. The other notable dislike is the small blurriness around the edge at higher magnifications.

Even with the flaws mentioned above, I do like this scope. It has the right features at an excellent price. It can be used with both eyes open down at 3x and can magnify smaller targets at the 12x setting. If you're not concerned about weight, this could be a good scope for your next AR.

Pretty good scope: Install and zeroing were pretty easy. I bought this and the Millett 1 piece mount sold as a combo here on Amazon. The mount allowed forward offset to improve eye relief on my flat top AR. Eye relief (real world) is around 4 inches. The eyepiece is large and the optics art crisp. Both eyes open works great. Not as crisp as the Nikon I have in the same price range but acceptable. There is both a focus and a parallax adjustment to make sure you get the cross-hairs in sharp focus which is nice. The turrets are a little mushy and don't give good tactile feedback but are acceptable. The zoom has no stops which I don't really like and it's pretty high effort which may be the price for a weather seal on this scope. Adjust zoom requires a firm grip on rifle because even with bipod, you need good leverage to change it. So far, it has held a crisp zero through 40 shots and the MOA system is nice for no shoot ranging. This is a good varmint scope IMHO. If it stays as good as it has been while new, I will be very happy.

Pelican 1200 Case

Sure enough after buying a full size Pelican gun case, I was convinced I needed to acquire the smaller sized cases the rest of my gear. The Pelican 1200 case is part of their small case line, and it's the perfect size for a single handgun, camera, or if you're me, a chronograph for those trips to the range. Like it's big brothers, the 1200 has the same super rugged copolymer polypropylene shell, open cell foam core and solid wall construction which makes it stronger and lighter that the competition. It's tough to find cases this small that also are deep enough to fit beefier items like cameras, lenses, batteries, and firearms accessories.

Available in several colors, I picked up a Pelican 1200 case in tan, since it's all the rage in the gun world still. The nicest feature of the 1200 is the pluck 'n pull foam layer inside. Instead of tracing and cutting out relief for your gear, you just pry strips of foam out until your desired fit/shape is achieved. I recommend having a pen knife of other slim blade at hand to help initiate separation of foam, especially on corners. Obviously whatever shape you make will be somewhat squared due to the precut grid, but it's really great to be able to chose your own layout for items. While many reviews complain the foam is too thick and makes retrieving certain items from the bottom problematic, you can easily plan ahead by removing the foam in as big a piece as possible, then cutting that chunk in half (or thirds, or whichever) and reinserting into place for a shallower compartment.

As mentioned earlier, I purposed this 1200 to fit my F1 Shooting Chronograph. Even with a lowly $100 price tag, I wanted to protect the Chrony as best as I could, since I go through such great lengths to not ventilate it at the range. The fit was perfect, and the rods just barely fit within the case's interior width (had to complete remove foam on the sides of the slot, the fit was literally just right). The batteries fit ontop of the rods, retaining them from falling out if the case is opened in a bad angle. The diffusors also conveniently fit under the main unit (the flat segments) and the 4 side segments fit lay flat on top of the foam.

 Like my previous review on the 1750 case, the 1200 case can be thrown in the trunk and taken on bumpy roads, or surviving the trials known as TSA luggage handlers. Dang near indestructible and keeps your expensive stuff from banging around or drowning in the drink, the Pelican 1200 will easily outlast other cheaper cases out there. Just beware, their almost like potato chips... just one is never enough!

Xtreme Hardcore Gear Force Recon Tactical Rings

When you are dumping money into a precision rifle, whether it be an AR-15, AR-10, or bolt action platform, theres a saying that goes "spend two times the amount of the gun on the optic." Easier said than done if you do in fact mind sleeping on the couch for a week. No matter what you spend on the rifle itself or the glass, they still have to interface together. The scope rings are just as important, as they determine how true the relationship will be between where you are aiming, the adjustment of your dope turrets, and where that bullet will go.

High quality rings will make sure your scope is and remains mounted securely and consistently shot after shot. Generally speaking, the higher the price tag, the better the machining of the pair of rings to be within tight tolerances and will hold your scope true to the rifle's bore. Of course, if you are canting your rifle or resting on uneven ground, everything goes out the window. Thats where a bubble level comes into play. There are a handful of scope level products on the market, either clamping onto the scope tube or mounting via picatinny rail somewhere on the rings. I've seen plenty of rifles with them, and I have a couple on my own tack drivers. What I haven't seen is a premium quality scope ring with an integral bubble level... until I found the Xtreme Hardcore Gear Force Recon Tactical Rings.

Besides being a mouthful, the Xtreme Hardcore Gear Force Recon Tactical Rings are one of the only sets of scope rings I've seen to both be of high quality, and integrate the bubble level. At around $180 they are certainly a premium, but perfect for a high dollar rifle that's purposefully built for small groups at long ranges. A scope won't track correctly along the X and Y axis (windage and elevation) if your scope and bore aren't perpendicular with the ground, thats a simple as I can put it. Firing a bullet from an non-level position will skew that bullets course exponentially the longer the distance, and your scope's tracking adjustments will be diagonally "hinky" as well.

In addition to the integral bubble level, these rings offer a level of precision only rivaled by $200+ ring sets. The Xtreme Hardcore rings are designed and machined to not allow the scope to move under any recoil scenario. The rings interface with the rail with a robust .875" mounting platform while the two cross slot bolts provide awesome clamping power without any protruding bolt heads. The cherry on top is the pair of steel guide rails that press into the ring base. The ring base clamp rides on these rails to keep the clamp perfectly aligned as the two cross slot bolts are drawn tight against the pic mount.  Another detail I appreciate is the rings and caps have a .030" radius on both sides of the scope bore to eliminate any marring or sharp contact points on your scope. Together with the provided 6 torx bolts for an evenly distributed force onto the top of the scope, these features add up to the best scope rings you can buy for precision work.

Pelican 1750 Long Case

There is one name than stands out in the gun storage market, to whom all other cases are compared against. That would be Pelican, and the cases they produce certainly earn the philosophy "Buy Once, Cry Once."  While near the top of the budget range, the Pelican Protector Series of gun cases are extremely durable. Often used in the military as well as international hunters traveling abroad for dangerous game, Pelican cases are depended on and deliver everything they promise to offer. Many gun owners will stray to cheaper budget cases, but the best way to protect your investment is investing in better protection and you would be hard pressed to find a more protective case than a Pelican.

I picked up a Pelican 1750 long case in OD green, knowing I would have to either remove the center foam insert or custom cut it to the shape of my desired firearm and accessories. I really enjoyed this aspect, as it let me have complete control on the degree of fit and shape of the cuts and how many accessories I can carry with my rifle. The process for measuring and cutting the holes for your gear can be easy and painless or shotty and grueling, depending on your aptitude and patience. While many How-To sources say to trace an outline of your gear with chalk or a marker, I chose to take an extra step for better precision and a better fit overall. Lay down masking tape or painters tape first, and that will prevent leaving marks or residue on the foam and also is necessary for the next steps. Trace the items using a marker or pen on the tape, but then you will take a razor or Exacto blade and cut the tape about 1/16" to 1/8" inside of your traced outline. This will give you a tighter fit to your items, as you are left with a tape edge to follow with your cutting device. You only need to cut deep enough to remove the tape, cut too deep and you will leave cuts in the foam you don't want - this is also a great reason for tracing everything backwards on the reverse side of the foam.

Many folks suggest using an electric knife (often used on thanksgiving) however I chose to use a jigsaw. Not only does the jigsaw automatically give your a level to keep the cuts perpendicular, but the thinner blade facilitates sharper corners. Make sure you find a blade that is long enough to trim the foam fully, 2 inches is a safe length. The most important thing to remember when cutting is to slow down and control the pace. The saw wants to pull forward, so without a firm controlled hand mistakes are abound. After trimming and checking for fit and before you discard the unwanted foam parts, flip the foam upside down and press the inner foam parts out a bit. This keeps the structure while you can spray an adhesive on the back, then insert into your case. Let dry, and then remove and discard the foam cutouts. The glue is optional, but a tighter fit means pulling the items out will pull out the foam too. Then again, if you want it somewhat more universal for multiple rifles, you can trace / cut it that way. Many 1750 owners carry two AR15 types rifles in one case, with cutouts for mags and accessories. Gotta love the options!

One more note, close your case on all your gear, then open back up after a few minutes. If you have any protruding items they will leave an indentation in the foam of the lid.  Your windage adjustment turret, for instance. I went ahead and trimmed a circle out in the top for the turret, you could also do this on the bottom foam lining if you have a turret for parallax adjustment. If you have a mounted bipod, you may want to cut a bigger area for clearance as Atlas, Harris, Caldwell, and other bipods have different profiles. After a couple hours, the 1750 was custom fit for my Remington 700 SA 20", with room for a suppressor as well as mags, rangefinder, removed bolt, and everything else. With a little modification, I was able to fit a second R700 Long Action with 26" barrel and similar scope!

Pelican cases are the epitome of protection for your firearms. Watertight and dustproof o-rings, crushproof shell and hinges, and double throw latches that are easy to open / close but tough. The padlock points are also steel reinforced (for travel use one TSA combo lock and key lock, don't make it easy for 'em!) and while the case itself is a whopping 25.5 lbs empty, its polyurethane wheels and robust handles make it possible to carry short distances. This is not a case you want to carry for long periods of time, especially if you have it packed with heavy rifles, optics, or multiple firearms.

These cases shine for throwing in the truck on bumpy roads or surviving the TSA luggage monkeys who are notorious for carelessly chucking or dropping expensive looking cases. The three layers of foam and durable construction helps keep your rifle zeroed and makes it less easy to brake into and rip you off. They aren't indestructible or theft-proof by any means, but their strength will endure what would easily scrap other cheaper cases out there, and if burglarizing takes minutes instead of seconds then it's somewhat more reassuring. Bottom line is, you will buy more cheaper cases over and over after wear and tear long before you buy a replacement Pelican case... that is unless you are looking for additional Pelican to suit other needs!

Hi-Point JCP .40 S&W Pistol

The Hi-Point JCP .40 Smith&Wesson is a big, heavy, inexpensive pistol that makes Glocks look attractive. It is a 100% American made, polymer framed, striker fired, blowback operated semiautomatic pistol. Most blowback pistols are .380 caliber or smaller because as the power of the cartridge increases the size/mass of the slide must increase also. The slide on the JCP is big and heavy so it can contain the power of the .40 S&W round. The fixed barrel of a blowback operated pistol, like the Hi-Point, makes it inherently accurate. I was able to shoot hand size groups at 100 yards using randomly reloaded ammo that had at least three different manufacturers' headstamps. I was able to do this multiple times and did it twice on video, I posted one of those on YouTube.

The Hi-Point JCP comes in a cardboard box with one 10 round magazine. The pistol seems simple, at first glance, but then you start to notice it has features that you wouldn't expect on sub-$200 pistol. It comes with a trigger lock, sight adjustment tool/key, chamber flag and an extra peep sight for the pistol. There are deep rear slide serrations, a cutout near the breech that serves as a loaded chamber indicator, a magazine disconnect safety, and the rear sight is adjustable for elevation and windage. It also has a proprietary accessory rail, but they do sell a picatinny adapter on their website. The front sight on the JCP is fixed with a painted yellow dot, while the rear sight has two painted and recessed red dots. It has a frame mounted safety on the left side, along with a standard magazine release button behind the trigger guard. All Hi-Point pistols come with a lifetime warranty. If you are the first owner or the fifth owner it doesn't matter it's under warranty. Many people would assume at this price point the JCP would be limited to standard powered ammunition, but they would be wrong, as it is rated to handle +P ammunition.

I purchased a Hi-Point JCP in .40 Smith&Wesson, initially as a range gun, in 2012. I could have purchased other pistols, but I had read enough positive reviews by people that owned Hi-Points to silence the negative comments from people that have never shot, held or owned one of these pistols. After firing nearly 3,000 rounds through the pistol, I feel I have enough information to give an informed review. I have used this as a range gun, used it to teach firearms classes, take firearms courses and even took the NRA Off-Duty Law Enforcement course! I have seen way more good than bad with this pistol and can say that it's a great buy, for the money. The pistol is a shooter but, sadly, some magazines may need to be tweaked to feed properly. My mags were causing the rounds to nose dive in the magazine. I have six magazines and I had to slightly bend the feed lips outward on all six with a multitool. After that, I have had no feeding problems in firing more than 2,500 rounds. I have cleaned the pistol three times, once out of the box, at 500 rounds and again before I took photos for this review. With about 2,000 rounds between cleanings, I have found no detriment in performance. I have shot full metal jacket ammo only through my pistol because it is a range gun for me. I have used reloads, steel, brass, and aluminum cased ammo from Tula, Lawman, Federal, Winchester and anyone else that had range ammo that I could find on sale. I have had no problems with any of it feeding or firing.

Taking it apart requires a 3/32” roll pin punch to remove the slide retainer pin. The directions say to use a pin punch, my suggestion is to use a ROLL pin punch instead. The roll pin punch will easily center on the slide retainer pin and not damage the pin itself unlike a regular pin punch. The take down is easy enough but a pin punch and a hammer are needed to remove that one pin. The JCP is a duty sized pistol with a 4.5 inch barrel, a eight inch over all length and a 38 ounce weight empty. The Hi-Point JCP is a big, heavy and bulky pistol that weighs more empty than a Glock 22 weighs loaded! I thought that I would have trouble finding a holster for my Hi-Point but I didn't have any trouble at all. Alien Gear, Galco and Tagua all make holster for this pistol, and I am sure there are more holster makers that produce factory holsters for Hi-Points. With the many Kydex custom holster makers around I am sure a custom holster can be made.

Bullet technology for self defense has gotten a bit of tunnel vision as of late. Manufacturers have been competing over penetration/non over-penetration, expansion, and weight retention quite heavily these days. While what the bullet does when entering the body of an attacker is important to a point, there is a variable that all these fancy bullets doesn't take into consideration. Under the immense stress of a lightning fast confrontation in a self defense scenario or threat encounter, you are likely to miss your target all together. While I'd love to quote a legitimate statistic on how many bullets fired in self defense scenarios hit versus miss, I would wager the number is less than 50%. Some self defense training courses offer the statistic that Law Enforcement shootings at 15 feet or less result in only a 10% hit rate. While a percentile of 90% shots missed seems abnormal, many who have actually been in the heat of the moment can attest to the difficulty if not trained, mentally prepared, and 100% on their game.

For ages, the shotgun was touted as the king of home defense because of the spread of birdshot or buckshot and the disregard for aiming properly. While half-true, the spread of shot can be irregular and inefficient, and requires travel distance after leaving the muzzle to adequately expand. What if there was a way to apply the concept of multiple projectiles in a handgun cartridge, giving the shooter a round with consistent increased hit probability, while retaining enough energy and terminal ballistics to stop the threat? If the projectiles can be given a controlled spread, misses off the body due to incorrect point of aim can still retain a chance of striking a hit.

A Colorado based company called Advanced Ballistic Concepts, LLC has designed a bullet that strives for the aforementioned goal. Multiple Impact Bullets or Mi Bullets™ are designed to take advantage of the spinning forces generated by a rifled barrel. When an Mi Bullet leaves a rifled barrel, the forces cause a rapid release of the bullet's tethered segments, expanding to a desirable radius in a much shorter distance than buckshot leaving a shotgun barrel. The inspiration for this concept is one I can relate to. Co-Founder Todd Kuchman was out camping and encountered a grouse, with only a rifle and pistol sidearm. Wanting to harvest the grouse for a savory campfire meal, he thought about the astounding feet of marksmanship needed for a perfect headshot, resulting in no damaged meat and a clean humane kill. While to story doesn't detail whether fowl was on the dinner menu that night, the inventor began brainstorming how a more forgiving projectile could be invented. After a home invasion experience and subsequently diving into the world of self defense courses, the concept for the Mi Bullet ™ was developed into three primary variations: non-lethal (Mi3 Stinger), semi-lethal (Mi3 Stunner), and fully lethal (Mi3 Stopper).

The Mi Bullet ™ consists of interlocking MI4™ segments assembled into a single projectile, that when fired and traveling down bore of the rifled barrel, begins to spin. As the projectile assembly leaves the muzzle of the firearm, the spinning forces imparted by the rifling causes the interlocked portions of the projectile to simultaneously move rapidly outward (Accelerated Radial Spread™) away from their original center of rotation with a 120° spacing from one another, still spinning to achieve stabilization along the original trajectory. How the ammunition differs between Stinger, Stunner, and Stopper (lethal, semi-lethal and non-lethal) comes down to the velocity and density of projectile materials (lead vs plastic, rubber, etc.) The 45 acp fully lethal Mi Bullet™ consists of a single buckshot weighing 31.5 grains, surrounded by three segments ranging between 36.5 - 37.5 grains, collectively forming an approximate 142 grain projectile. The 12 gauge fully lethal Mi Bullet™ slug consists of a 75.5 grain bullet-shaped core thats surrounded by three segments weighing between 205 and 210 grains each, adding up to a whopping yet approximate 700 grains slug. As a reloader, the weights of each individual part interest me, as does the inconsistency of the segment weights.

The key to the controlled separation of the segments is a multi-staged tether/brake™ system that balance the expanding radial forces with the centrifugal force to gyroscopically stabilize the orbiting segments around their original center of rotation as if it had remained a solid slug. There's alot of physics language on the website if you are interested in the science behind the concept. For my fellow laymen, the bullet has a core and connected segments that expand into a Y shape rapidly out of the barrel, giving you a projectile that forgives close misses. It's important to know that the radial spread doesn't stay constant at 14", at it travels it will pulsate at the tethered segments expand and contract from their center axis. While still possible to miss enough for all the parts to miss their target, the tethered fragments do grant you a better chance of a hit. In a life or death confrontation, and glancing flesh-wound of the abdomen can still carry a chance of striking near center mass with a segment and stopping the threat.

In my range test, I found the 45 acp full-lethal round to have a full spread at around 10 to 15 yards, my initial shot at 15-20 feet didn't reach the advertised radial spread. The core of the 45 bullet just a round buckshot pellet, and doesn't hold much accuracy despite the segments acting like a sabot. Interestingly enough another shot had struck the neck, and a segment had wrapped around to the back of the head and embedded into the spine, like a bolo wrapping around prey.

Giving the 12 gauge full lethal shells a turn, The segments spread well at mid range, wide enough to span the face of Bobby Bluebeard completely. Mr. Pink however was not so lucky, as the 12ga core glanced his left temple but a segment nailed the forehead and blew out the back (foam not an accurate analog for the human head). This demonstrates the goal of the Mi concept: increase your odds and turn close misses into direct hits.

 As for the legality of shooting and killing someone with a non-lethal or semi-lethal round, I'm not touching that with a ten foot pole. Multiple Impact does color the packaging for each (Green for non lethal-stinger, Orange for semi lethal-stunner, Red for full lethal-stopper). If I hadn't already known that differentiation I would have had a difficult time because the ammunition itself isn't marked on headstamp or hull, and the packaging is so cluttered with marketing buzzwords and trademarks that its a tad overwhelming, at least in the eyes of a professional graphic designer.

I would have loved go for a hike in the woods and report back with a harvested grouse or rabbit using my 1911 and the 45 acp Mi Bullet ™ but there were none to be found on that day as luck would have it. Obviously these rounds are specifically designed for human size targets, as the spread can be between 10" and 14" as the range that grouse or rabbits typically afford me before their wits finally kick in and they scurry off. Perhaps a 'small game load' pistol round could be in the works later on down the road with a shorter radial spread and perhaps more than 3 segments, in different calibers as well including revolver cartridges. One can only dream! For two legged threats, the concept behind the Multiple Impact Bullet is very interesting and innovative, but it won't replace my favorite hollowpoints just yet. I look forward to seeing the execution and marketing strengthen over time.

"As it turns out my testing at different ranges doesn’t accurately tell the whole story of the bullets expansion. As the bullet flies downrange the diameter is constantly increasing and decreasing in size, or pulsing. At its smallest size the dispersion might be 5″ and at its largest it will be limited by the length of its tethers, which is 14″.

I did notice at 7 and even 15 yards the point of impact was pretty much where I had aimed. At 25 yards the projectiles had veered off course and struck left of center, but still scored a solid hit on the target.

I pulled a bullet apart to see what made the rounds tick and found a simple coil of string tethering three copper/zinc alloy projectiles together. Each of the bullet fragments weighed right at 40 grains with a variance of a grain or two between them. This variance is likely what contributed to the fired round drifting from point of aim at distances greater than 15 yards. I wasn’t able to fire the rounds over a chronograph to measure bullet velocity as I was concerned I might hit the device. As of this writing the manufacturer hasn’t published velocity data on the bullets.

As of right now it’s too early for me to pass judgement on this unique new defensive round. What I can say is that the concept is innovative and I personally find it to be interesting. Will it replace my 147gr 9mm Gold Dots anytime soon?  No, not at the moment, but stick around as I put this new ammo through its paces. Who knows, maybe it will knock my socks off." SnapSafe LockBox XL

Secure handgun storage is a crucial factor in preventing accidental shootings and stolen firearms. Many gun owners might not have the space or funds for a expensive full size safe, or are more mobile and spend more time in their vehicle or hotel rooms than at home. A portable safe small enough to stow beneath a car seat or on a nightstand that can stand up to abuse or burglary attempts is exactly whats needed.

While there are many inexpensive handgun lock boxes on the market, they often only come in one size, which may be too size of a fit for your pistol, magazines, or other belongings you wish to secure. Owners of larger handguns like revolvers or full size 1911s may find some of the aforementioned boxes to be too cozy to their liking. This allows for a husband/wife set for example, or keeping a lockbox in the car and the home, or one at the office. The Lockbox XL is a very simple yet strong design. The internal dimensions are 9.5 inches by 6.5 inches, and affords room for a full size 1911, a compact handgun, or even two subcompacts. The sides are reinforced with steel that overlaps the seam when closed, acting as an anti prying feature. The steel cable included can be looped into a lasso for securing to a solid object, or padlocked to itself. The lockbox has a porthole cut in it's left edge to accomodate the cable.

 The SnapSafe Lockbox XL is a great option for conceal carriers who need to lockup their firearm, especially if traveling through a state that requires such provisions. I tried out multiple firearms in different configurations inside the Lockbox, and was please with most of the fit except for thinner frame single stack firearms like the Shield or G42 will slide around and bang the walls because of the thin lining. While I'd like to see thicker foam inside and a better way to attach the cable, the hinges and overall construction are pretty solid. When there's an option that costs less than a box of ammunition and keeps your firearms from falling into the wrong hands, there's no excuse to not have one.

RTK Sweet Pea trigger for Ruger LCP

As many Ruger LCP owners may know, the trigger is probably the worst part of the firearm. RTK has improved this feature with its Sweet Pea trigger for the LCP. Having owned and shot my LCP for awhile now, I can appreciate this upgrade. When firing the firearm, my finger would get pinched by the trigger. The sharp recoil of the little .380 didn't help this any. After installing the Sweet Pea trigger I realized that the trigger bite had gone away. This is something that RTK says comes from the pivot point to trigger face relationship. The installation on the trigger can be a little overwhelming for some, but if you have some mechanical aptitude and some tools it can be done with ease. The online instructions from RTK are excellent! Here is a link to the trigger instruction: Sweet Pea Installation. They have pictures and descriptions to walk you step by step through the installation. Basically, if you can detail strip the pistol, you can install this trigger. I would recommend having a small dish to put the parts in. The only problem I ran into was getting the trigger block positioned correctly. It took me three tries, but that really only added about 5 minutes extra. The trigger kit also comes with a new stainless trigger pin. After installation the trigger needs to be adjusted. To do this you will need a .050" allen wrench or driver, one with a ball head would be even better. My trigger over-travel screw was turned too far in, and needed to be backed out a few turns to get the pistol to fire. It then would not reset completely so I needed to back out the pre-travel screw.  After adjusting the travel screws, the instructions say to back the screws out 2 turns and then put some thread locker on them, and screw them back in 2 turns. I found this to be time consuming due to the fact that the screws are not the easiest to get to. The only real negative that I had about the trigger is that it did not include a wrench for adjustment and getting to the set screws for adjustment is awkward.

I like the trigger okay. It does make the trigger pull feel smoother. And since it is adjustable, it makes the overall trigger travel shorter. A big plus. The width of the trigger also gives it a better feel to me. It is not a match grade trigger, nor should it be. But it is better than the factory Ruger trigger. However, I do believe there could be more room for improvement. RTK also offers a variety of triggers for other small semi-auto pistols.

Water is the number one priority when it comes to keeping us alive. Myself as a hunter, as well as many of you reading right now that may be hikers, bikers, joggers, loggers or otherwise active people need to rehydrate to function during demanding tasks. Carrying water with you is always a smart plan, but the biproduct is either producing waste in the form of empty water bottles, or lugging around the more popular athletic water bottles for the rest of the day. Like a modern wineskin, the bladder can be a space saving vessel for transporting water on the go, and it can be rolled up and crammed into your bag when empty. However, bladders always seems to leave a plastic aftertaste with each sip, are cumbersome to fill, and eventually tend to leak.

The Hydrapak Stash water bottle is an evolution of the canteen, bladder and bottle rolled - or should I say collapsed - into one neat little package. The Stash has soft walls that are RF welded (radio frequency) for strength, while the top and bottom ends of the bottle are molded plastic so when the soft middle walls are twisted, the top and bottom snap together for a profile thats less that 2 inches tall with a diameter of 3.5 inches. When collapsed and capped, the Stash easily can stow into a backpack, satchel, fanny pack, purse, or other personal carriers. When needed, the bottle can be uncapped and squeezed to release the tab locks, and then untwisted to form a 750ml capacity water bottle.

The Stash's construction is its selling feature, as the company reps love standing atop the filled bottles during tradeshows or presentations to demonstrate the strength of the RF welding. Another huge selling point is the materials used are BPA and PVC free, which is the main reason why alot of consumers are straying away from disposable plastic water bottles and snatching up sturdier plastic containers made from less harmful materials. When empty, those bottles still retain their shape and are really no different from a glass bottle after carrying it or packing it around all day.  The Stash is trendy and functional, and is easy to stow or pack anywhere. When collapsed, Stash bottles even stack together giving you space efficiency and a high capacity for water storage.

As a hunter, I can see the benefit of the Stash bottle is its silent collapsing and storage. Crinkling water bottles are a super buzzkill in the woods, and a full size bottle takes up alot of valuable room on the pack. While a full stash bottle is no more compact or storable than a regular container, it's flexible walls will be more accustomed packed into the same pocket as your binoculars or other gear as opposed to a rigid and heavier bottle. Having a 750ml vessel thats easy to fill with a wide mouth that can be condensed down when not in use is a very pleasant convenience. Just remember to loosen the cap when expanding or collapsing to open the vacuum.

The only negative points I can give this product is the cap has no way of being tethered to the bottle to prevent loss, despite a carry loop and collar around the bottles neck that would serve as an attachment point. This a feature found on other Hydrapak products that I find would have liked to see carry over to the Stash.
