JP Enterprises - Recoil Eliminator

JP Recoil Eliminators

In my opinion, this muzzle break is extremely effective.  Its weight compared to a lot of other breaks on the market is average, but this  muzzle break itself is a lot bulkier.  On the other hand, I believe that the effectiveness of the muzzle break does make up for the size.  More so if the break is being mounted to a  target rifle where weight and size isn't a big deal.

CZ-82 Pistol Review

CZ - 82

The CZ-82 is a compact pistol chambered in 9mm Makarov, or 9x18mm. It was designed for the Czechoslovakian military when the Soviet Union standardized to the 9x18mm round. The pistol is a double action/single action design, meaning that the first shot is a heavy double action and each subsequent shot is a short single action pull. It holds a 12 round magazine and has an ambidextrous magazine release and safety. The slide release is on the left side of the frame. I prefer my carry pistols not have a safety, so I carry it with a round in the chamber and the hammer down. In this condition, the safety cannot be activated, so I don’t worry about the safety being inadvertently activated. There is an internal hammer block that does not allow the hammer to strike the firing pin, unless the trigger is pulled. The sights on the pistol were no longer filled with the original red paint, but I was able to swap them to tritium sights designed for the CZ-75.  My pistol was made in 1987 and showed very apparent wear from carry.  It

CZ-82 Bottle Openerwas very well broken in and the trigger was smooth as silk. The barrel has polygonal rifling, which aids in accuracy. One thing to note on the rifling is that it will look smooth, but if you look closely, you will see there is rifling. This is the way they are made, so don’t worry. I am able to shoot very nice groups with this pistol. My only complaint of this pistol would be that when using a "thumbs forward" grip, there isn't really much for my left thumb to rest on, so it tends to rub the slide. This causes enough drag that the pistol will sometimes not fully cycle, and leave a spent case in the chamber. With a conscious effort to correct my grip, I have never had a malfunction. The way I remedy this is to curl my thumbs together. CZ also offers their Model 83, which is a newly made version available in .380 ACP and .32 ACP. On a final note, if you are ever in dire need, you can use the pistol as a bottle opener by locking the slide back and hooking the dust cover under the cap!

S&W Performance Center 627 VCOMP

627 Vcomp

If you are a Smith & Wesson revolver fan and you want more than a production gun, the Performance Center is your next stop. The Performance Center takes production line guns and hand fits the parts. On some models they also add special features.  Each gun is assembled by craftsmen who make sure fit, finish, quality and performance are all top tier.

The 627 in standard form is an 8 shot .357/.38 N (large) frame revolver which presently can be had in a 4" pro or 5" pc series. Both have tapered slab sided barrels, adjustable iron sights and stainless construction. The VCOMP model is made for competition. It features the same stainless construction but with a melonite coating on the frame and barrel for a beautiful 2 tone look. The sights are adjustable with the front being an orange dovetail style. The most unique feature is the removable compensator on the barrel. If you wanted to shoot open class in competition, all you would need is a mount, a red dot and you are set. If you plan to shoot limited, just replace the comp with the included muzzle cap and use your iron sights. Most revolver competitors use this model, including our own hostess at Gun Girl Radio, the beautiful and talented Julie Golob.
My journey with the VCOMP started with me wanting one for quite some time. I decided to shoot Bianchi Cup and wanted to go whole hog and shoot open class with the best of the best. So I sold my beloved 627 pro and saved up some more money and ordered my VCOMP.  I ordered it December 2012 and finally got it in February of 2013, just months before Bianchi.  Fit and finish were fantastic, BUT the action was not up to par. Pull weight was around 14lbs and no where near as smooth as my other PC guns. Very disappointed to say the least.  I pulled the side plate off and also discovered they were not using pinned stirrups any longer in the PC guns. Some polishing had been done on the rebound block but not nearly enough. I had hoped to shoot it with out my smooth and tune.  Set my hopes too high.  I did my normal work, set trigger pull weight to 8lbs (to run factory ammo),smoothed it up and added an Aimpoint red dot sight.  I ended up with an Aimpoint pro instead of the t1 due to availability.
In all fairness, S&W would have gladly taken it back and made it what it should have been.  However I was afraid of not getting it back in time.  The gun was fully functional and looked beautiful, but just didn't have that awesome smooth pull of a Performance Center gun.  Well it does now and it's about to get more upgrades with reviews as I redo it for ICORE limited and USPSA competition this coming year

Crosman Game Face GF1911G Airsoft Pistol

GF1911G

Before I get started I have to mention that the orange tip on this pistol was shot out of the barrel.  It does come with the orange tip from the factory.  I think it may have gotten bumped and knocked out of alignment though.  All testing was done without the orange tip in place.

My first impression of this pistol really created a deeper desire to keep shooting it! The thing that really stands out is that the weight is so comparable to a real 1911, coming in at 33.6 oz.  The grip safety depresses but is non-functional.  The hammer falls but GF1911G grip safetydoes not stay in battery.  There is a thumb safety that is strictly for aesthetics and does not move at all.  I mention this because it seems weird that these features are non-functional but for the purpose of an airsoft pistol I think it would really drive the price up if all of these components were functional.  They feel real. And for training purposes this would come in very handy, at least for pulling the trigger.  Having a non-functional thumb safety that doesn't move would, however, not be the best option for training to draw and fire your 1911 if you carry one on a GS1911G safetyregular basis. So there is that to think about.  The actual safety on the pistol is on the right side above the trigger and is easily toggled forward and backward with your index finger.

As far as the slide release goes, it functions like normal. With this pistol the slide release engages when the magazine is in place and you pull the slide back.  It has fixed black sights but it's rare that the pistol shoots a BB that doesn't curve so I can't tell if the sights are good or not.  Whether it was a full CO2 cartridge or a half empty one, it didn't seem to affect the consistency of the shots.  One BB would curve to the left then the next would curve to the right.  I know this is typical but they seemed like they were going off target a little more than they should have been.

GF1911G slide back

*I'll be adding a picture of my groups and distances shortly.*

GF1911G magazineThe magazine is kind of heavy since it's metal but does allow for a fast release when the magazine release isGF1911G components pushed.  The magazine is a slim, and holds 15 rounds.  It fits compactly into the grip along with the CO2 cartridge and the hex head set screw tool for tightening and loosening the CO2 cartridge. To remove/replace the CO2 cartridge you release the magazine, pop the grip plate off, let the hex head fall out (which is held in place tandemly with the grip plate and magazine when in place), and then simply loosen or tighten the set screw. Simple.  It's nice that it all fits right into the grip.

One of the other things I really like about it is that the slide blows back on every shot, simulating a slight degree of recoil.  Very slight.  However, one thing I don't like is how much the slide rattles around.  The slide itself is fairly light and the tolerances are less than satisfactory.  If you give the pistol a shake, it's actually quite loud.  The good thing is that this does not affect accuracy and does not indicate one way or the other how well built the pistol is.  The entire pistol, with exception to the slide tolerances, is durable and sturdy.

I thoroughly enjoyed shooting the GF1911G. I would recommend this to ANYONE looking for an affordable and realistic way to have fun shooting, save some money on ammo, and train.

Mechanix M-Pact Gloves

Mechanix-MPact-Gloves-01.jpg

Mechanix-MPact-Gloves-01

Every shooting enthusiast should have a pair of gloves, for safety as well as comfort.  Some gloves have even been designed with shooting mechanics in mind, which not only assists in a positive grip but absorbing recoil as well.  And then there's winter, where you would be crazy to shoot without gloves on... especially if it is below zero and you are wrapping your mits around an all-steel frame pistol.  Brr!

With all the tactical clothing brands out there, sometimes you just don't know what you want until you see someone else wearing Mechanix MPact Glovesit.  I saw a youtube video on the Military Arms Channel with the host wearing the M-Pact gloves, and it convinced me to give them a try.  I purchased them online from Full Source, although you could probably find them locally since Mechanix is a fairly popular glove brand... I could only find the actual mechanic/automotive styles around me.  The company mistakenly sent me another pair of a different style (and different size) with another customer's billing information, so I just forwarded the package onto its correct destination and Full Source gratefully credited me back for the shipping costs.

Anyways, back to the gloves... they're really nice.  I find that they are not as sensitive / dexterous as other competitors who focus on shooting, such as the PIG full dexterity tactical glove from SKD tactical.  But I kind of wanted something a bit more robust but still light enough to load mags, manipulate controls, etc.  They have a rubberized pad over three knuckles that run down your three non-shooting fingers, which looks very attractive and almost skeletal, yet I haven't found a purpose for them.  Maybe backhanding the person who muzzles you at the range? The rubber is attached through "sonic welding" which is absolutely a marketing buzzword because my right glove already has separation between the fabric and the rubber in one spot.  Nothing some crazy glue didn't solve.

The index finger, thumb, and top-of-the-palm have a layer of texture patches which assist in gripping, they work okay when wet but exceptionally.  There are two pads sewn inside the glove for the remainer of the palm which do absorb recoil very well.  Makes the snappier pistol calibers less stingy after a few mags for sure.

Would I buy these again if I had to?  Sure, but I'd take a closer look at the competition.  Does the pair I already own have a permanent home in my range bag?  Absolutely, as long as they still hold up.

Crosman MAR177 PCP AR-15 Upper Receiver Conversion Kit

MAR177-PCP.jpg

Crosman MAR177 PCP

Have you ever considered a conversion kit for your AR-15 platform rifle or carbine? Perhaps a 22LR kit that snaps onto your lower receiver and allows you to shoot the economical 22 Rimfire. How about a conversion kit that shoots an even more economical round and keeps your guns clean?

Let me preface this with telling you that I am NOT the target market for this conversion kit.  This product is designed for the precision rifle competition shooter, so from my point of view the price point was a real shocker at first. However, I do see value in more than just a competition setting. This could be a really good training option for any AR-15 shooter. I would compare it to a 22LR conversion in some ways. Yes, it’s more expensive, but the ammo is way cheaper than even 22LR. You can purchase 1,250 (177) caliber pellets for about $14. So over time you may break even with a 22LR conversion kit. One of the big benefits of an air rifle upper is that they are very CLEAN, you will rarely, if ever, have to clean this. Not something you can say about 22LR conversion kits.  My one big issue is that fact that you have to manually charge the action every time you take a shot. I’m sure this is not an issue for the intended users since they mostly shoot bolt guns in small bore competitions. Overall I'm very pleased with this conversion kit, it leaves a smile on my face each time I shoot it.  Whether you're training for 10-meter rifle matches, plinking cans or shooting apples, I would recommend taking a serious look at the Crosman MAR177.

5.11 Tactical - Rush 24

Whether it's carrying extra gear out to the range, hiking, a bug-out bag or just a general carry-all backpack, the 5.11 Tactical Rush 24 is a winner all around.  I have owned this bag for over a year now and have found a variety of different uses for it.  Originally I purchased this bag with the intent to use it as my keep in the truck bug-out bag.  5.11 gave this bag the name "Rush 24" because it

5.11 Tactical - Rush 24was designed to hold enough gear for 24 hours.  However I found myself using this bag so much on a day to day basis, that I purchased a second bag.  If you are looking to carry less or more gear, 5.11 Tactical offers this bag in a Rush 12 and 72.

Here is what I love about this bag.  First is its durability.  After a year and a half of use, the bag looks and still performs as if it was brand new.  Second, the molle/slickstick system is great for customizing additional pouches to this bag to fit your needs.  Third, the internal and external pockets are set up in a way that all your gear stays organized, doesn't move around and you can access it all very easily.  Last, the hydration pocket.  To be honest, I didn't  think that I would ever use this feature.  Then I discovered that if you are going to be hiking or just traveling around with this pack on your back all day, the hydration pocket is great for keeping you refreshed.  Instead of having water bottles shoved in the main pack and taking up room, you can simply have the bladder bag delivery tube at-the-ready.

NcStar AR15 Golf Ball Launcher

NcStar Photo 2

It is pretty uncommon to catch a group of grown men giggling like school girls until you realize that they are launching golf balls over a 1/4 mile from an AR15.  I’ve never really been a fan of NcStar equipment so when I received this golf ball launcher as a gift, I was a little unsure of what to expect.  At almost 6” long and nearly 1lb in weight, its a pretty good sized attachment to an AR15.  The device itself seems to be well crafted and very sturdy.

It easily threads onto the barrel of most AR15’s after removal of the flash hider (or whatever muzzle device your AR15 sports).  Once hand-tightened to your barrel, you simply drop a golf ball into the muzzle end of your barrel and  load your AR15 with .223 or 5.56 blank rounds.  Keeping firearms safety rules in mind, aim the rifle in a safe direction and fire!  This device launches the loaded golf ball at least 1/4 mile so be sure your range has plenty of room and you are aware of what is beyond your intended target.  There were multiple times I lost the golf ball in the clouds when shooting them...they go f-a-a-a-a-r!!  From personal experience I can also tell you that golf balls can ricochet quite quickly if they hit a tree at the wrong angle, so make sure all personnel and parked trucks are a safe distance away.  I was fortunate enough to test this device on a large plot of land (several hundred acres) so make sure your facility can handle what this thing will deliver.  When shooting golf balls with blanks, not enough gas is delivered to the bolt to cycle the action of an AR15, so you have to manually cycle your action using your charging handle; NcStar - AR15 Golf Ball Launchernot a big deal just a simple result of using blank rounds.

The golf ball launcher provides hours of fun, laughter, and amazement but please don’t confuse it for a toy.  This device can launch a golf ball at serious speeds that will at a minimum blow right through a piece of roofing tin.  This should never be shot at anything you don’t intend to kill, injure, or maim because that is exactly what it will do.  This isn’t anywhere near accurate so always make sure everything near your intended target is safe to shoot at.  It is also intended for use only with blank rounds, never live rounds.  Also be aware that blank rounds don’t mean quiet rounds.  The rounds are just as loud as normal .223/5.56 ammo so wear proper hearing and eye protection.

To be economical, I suggesting finding a local driving range that sells used golf balls or purchasing used golf balls online.  A friend suggested finding glow in the dark golf balls (used for night golf) and launching them after sunset.  As soon as I get a chance to head back out to my test property, I’ll be sure to invest in a few of these to see how they look being launched at night.  I never thought launching golf balls from an AR15 would be able to be topped, but maybe doing it at night will be even better.

Just to warn you though, your face muscles will cramp from all the laughter and smiling this golf ball launcher provides.  If launching a golf ball using this launcher doesn’t put a huge smile on your face, nothing will.

LRI Photon Freedom Micro-Light Review

Photon Freedom

This light may look like a last-minute grab at the gas station check-out counter, but it is far from that! The Photon Freedom has proven to be an excellent light. It is very small and light, plus can be activated with one hand by a push button on the top. It is offered in the regular version and the “Covert” model. The covert model adds a shield around the LED to prevent spilling of side light. I chose the Covert model for that reason. Unlike most key-chain lights, it has an actual on/off switch, rather than just a momentary on. It is not incredibly bright, but very usable, when you need it. It will even dimly light up my neighbor’s yard from

Photon Freedom Magnetabout 40 yards away just enough to make sure my dog isn’t wandering. When you hold the activation switch, the light will start on a very dim setting and ramp its way up to its max output. Once there, the light will flash once, to notify you that it is in max. If the light is on, it will do the opposite and get dimmer, once again, flashing when it’s at its lowest setting. Continuing to hold the button past the flash will start the light into its specialty modes. You can choose slow beacon, fast beacon, strobe and auto SOS by releasing the button once on the desired setting. You can even set it to momentary by rapidly pressing the on/off button 6 times. The light comes in many beam colors including white, red, blue, purple and even infrared. It also comes with a mount that has a clip and magnets for nearly unlimited hand-free placement options.

Snag Mag Concealed Magazine Holster

Snag Mag 1

This is a very innovative product. It helps to conceal an extra magazine in your pocket while still keeping it easily accessible. It’s designed to look as thought you are carrying a pocket knife and not an extra magazine. The pocket clip is nice and strong but not

Snag Mag 2strong enough to hold it while you draw your magazine. However, there’s a barb that protrudes off the back of it that is meant to catch on the back corner of your pocket. I wore this with many different pants and shorts to give it a good all around test. It even worked with sweat pants and a pair of basketball short that had pockets. It would seem that as long as your pocket is big enough for a magazine, it’ll work. Even if your pocket is a little too small you could cant it a little as the pocket clip does rotate. You’re meant to carry it on your weak hand side, towards the back of your front pants pocket. You can also carry it in your Snag mag Pantswaistband if you’d prefer. Playing with it I figured out that you can also carry it towards the front of your pocket if you want. If that’s the case though you need to buy one that's meant to be carried on your firing side so that the barb will catch your pants. Loaded with a PF9 magazine and 7 rounds of self-defense ammo this holster does its job. The only complaint I have is that this one was made to hold a magazine for a Kel-tec PF9, Ruger LC9, or Beretta Nano. Since it was made specifically for the PF9 it has a little extra length to accommodate the others that is wasted space with the magazine I have. Perhaps a little time with a heat gun and a dremel could fix that. Overall it is a great product and I would recommend it to anyone. They don’t have one for every pistol though so go to their website and see if they have yours.

FourSevens Preon 2 Review

Preon 2 Main

The FourSevens Preon 2 is a great everyday carry light. Powered by 2 AAA batteries, it is very slim and easy to carry in the pocket. It is about the size of a standard size Sharpie marker.

Preon 2 with Sharpie

The advertised output is 160 Lumens. It has a very shallow reflector, so it does not project the beam very far, but the light is still usable for seeing movement out to about 50+ yards. The light has 3 output levels and 4 Special modes. The modes are Low(2.2 lumens), Medium(22 lumens), High (160 lumens), Strobe, SOS, Beacon Hi and Beacon Lo. The light turns on in low mode and to access other modes, you can either “soft” tap the tailcap switch, or turn it off and back on within a second. Once you cycle through Low-Med-High twice in quick succession, you will start to cycle through the special modes. The light has a beautiful anodizing that feels almost like velvet to the touch. It holds up very well, except around the hard edges, like the bezel. The tailcap activation switch is very positive and easy to actuate, but it’s almost TOO easy. If you carry this light in your pocket, rather than clipped inside of your pocket, you are sure to activate. One way around this is to purchase a flat tailcap from FourSevens. It is the tailcap that comes standard on their single battery version. With the flat tailcap installed, you must twist the bezel to activate the light. Another way is just to unscrew the bezel. It will work just like having the flat tailcap, except you will have to make sure the clicky switch is on at the same time. The lights are a little pricey, for their size, but very much worth it, in my opinion.

Sig Sauer – SP2022

 Sig 2022

Last year about this time I found myself in the market for a new pistol. I knew I wanted a polymer framed handgun that was accurate and reliable, to use more as a range toy but could also be a carry gun if it had to.  I really found myself drawn to the Springfield Armory XDM and had decided to place an order.  That is until one day I was in my local gun shop and the sales guy behind the counter handed

Sig 2022 - 4me a Sig Sauer SP 2022.  Instantly there was just something about that gun!  It was so comfortable.  It was like the grip just melted into my hand.  Later that month, Black Friday rolled around. The Sig SP 2022 was marked down a hundred bucks and I took one home. I’ve been carrying it for about a year now and I’m just as happy with my purchase now as I was then.  People may ask, “Tiny, what’s so great about a fifteen year old design?”  Well I’m so glad you asked!

In 1998, Sig Sauer released their first polymer frame pistol in 40 S&W and 357 Sig.  Then a year later, they released it in 9mm.  For the time, the Sig Pro series handgun was a pretty nifty design with interchangeable grips and an accessory rail.  However, the polymer framed hand guns had not yet been embraced by the market.  The Sig Pro soon became known as the poor man’s P226.  However a few years later, polymer became the industry standard.  In 2002, Sig redesigned the Sig Pro for French law enforcement Sig 2022 - 2and rereleased it as the Sig SP2022 with a service life in mind of twenty years (hence the designation 2022).  The pistol is very similar to the Sig P226.  It uses the classic DA/SA trigger that Sig is known for with no manual safety.  Instead, the gun features a decoking lever in its place and Sig’s four point safety system.  It has a 3.9 inch barrel with an overall length of 7.4 inches.  Its 5.7 inches tall, 1.3 inches wide and weighs 29 ounces unloaded.  Some say it’s a little chunky for IWB carry but if the French can do it, it can’t be that bad!  It shoots great!  The double action trigger pull is 10 pounds and even though that sounds heavy, it’s very smooth!  With a little practice, you won’t have any trouble holding your sights on target.  The single action trigger pull is 4.5 pounds which in my opinion is ideal.  The reset is a little long but it’s not really a problem unless you’re Jerry Miculek.  Still, high level competition shooters may opt for a shorter reset trigger on their match pistols.

Now you may be asking, “gee whiz, are there any reasons I shouldn’t get one?”  My answer is not many.  There’s not a ton of Sig 2022 - 3aftermarket accessories and most of them are from Sig Sauer themselves.  To they’re credit they haven’t abandoned it.  You can buy different size grips and switch between 40 S&W and 357 Sig with conversions available.  Unfortunately there are no conversions for 9mm and neither is there a 22 conversion for plinking on the cheap.  Also, while there are holsters out there to be had, you may not have your choice manufacturer.  Furthermore, while the sandpaper like grip is great for IDPA, I would recommend an undershirt if you’re carrying IWB because it will eat into your side like a bull shark!  That, or order the large grip from Sig.  It has rubber inserts that are real comfortable, but if anybody from Sig is reading this, we really need a medium or small size grip with the rubber inserts.  Magazines are relatively easy to find. The 40 S&W and 357 Sig have a capacity of 12 while the 9mm is 15.  Mec Gar also makes 17 round magazines for the 9mm.  There are rumors that Sig is coming out with a 20 round factory magazine for the 9mm chambering, but I wouldn’t hold my breath till I see one.

Still all things considered, this is a great pistol for the money!  Take down of the pistol is done with one pin that doubles as the slide release leaver.  That makes for easy cleaning and reassembly. Accurate and reliable, I’ve never had a single malfunction.  Supposedly, the French police tested the pistol with over 400,000 rounds without having a malfunction!  I doubt many shooters will fire that many rounds through a single handgun.  If you looking for Sig Sauer quality but don’t have a thousand dollars to spend to get it, look no further than the Sig SP 2022.  Give it a shot; you’ll be glad you did!

Aimpoint Micro T-1 (2 moa)

Aimpoint T-1 2moa

 By Agent95

For all the readers that own an AR-15, I am sure you will agree that “we all need a run and gun AR”.  As for me, I made sure I had one for myself and one for my wife.  I've spent money on cheap optics in the past and realized that I needed something reliable.  As I searched for a new optic, the Aimpoint Micro T-1 started to get my attention.  This optic had many reviews which raved about its reliability, so I thought I’d give it a try.  The box arrived at my doorstep and I couldn't wait to have this little guy installed to go shooting with.  I wanted a lower 1/3 cowitness but the T-1 did not come with the mount I needed for my AR.  As such, I ended up purchasing a Larue mount which was perfect.  Once everything was set up, I paid the local outdoor range a visit.  The Aimpoint is very, Aimpoint T-1 (2 moa)very, and I mean VERY LIGHT weight! Only weighing in at 3 oz  (red-dot only), I knew my go to AR would be a lightweight rifle.  The T-1 has 4 night vision settings along with 8 daylight settings, which go from dim to very bright.  Each brightness setting was perfect for any type scenario.  The one thing that I absolutely love about this red-dot is the battery life.  The red-dot may stay on a constant “on” for a minimum of 50,000 hours.  That is over 5 years on a single watch battery setting “9”, which is bright enough for most situations.  This gives me the opportunity to leave the red-dot on and not worry about fumbling to turn it on during a high stress situation.  The T-1 is also fully waterproof up to 80 feet.  I heard that you can put a bullet through it and it will still be 100% fully functional for duty. Maybe I’ll do a torture test like it in the future.  One thing I didn't like too much are the rubber bikini covers.  They seemed a bit weak and I will most likely lose them in the near future.  The windage and elevation adjustments are located under 2 small caps, which can be hard to adjust but it didn't bother me too much.  Once I had it dialed for 50 yards, it was perfect.  Overall, this is an amazing red-dot and I can confidently say that it will stay in the family for a long long time.  Is it worth the money?  I would say yes.  It is expensive, but you can never put a price on something you can depend your life on.  Its lightweight, its reliable and it will never break on you.  Who wouldn't want that?

Duluth Trading Cab Commander

Duluth Trading Cab Commander

By Jared Auchter

Have you ever found yourself in one of these situations?  You're driving down the road and all of a sudden the guy in front of you stops short, or a deer jumps out in front of your vehicle.  You slam on your brakes and what happens?  All the stuff that you had sitting on the seat next to you goes flying off and mixes all up on the floor.  Or perhaps you're someone whose car is also your mobile office.  You want to be able to keep all your gear/supplies ready and at the go but as the week goes by, what happens?  Some how all that stuff finds it way under your seats, between your seats and or lost.

So what should we do about all that?  In my humble opinion, the folks at Duluth Trading Company came up with a pretty clever solution.  The Cab Commander is a great way to finally be able to keep your vehicle clean and organized.  Tons of pockets for everything from pens, to flashlights, ID cards, cell phones, umbrellas and even a thermos holder.  I have owned one of these for almost a year now and I absolutely love it.  The material that Duluth used in constructing the Cab Commander is strong and very durable.  The feature that I love the most about this product is such a simple one.  The strap that holds the Cab Commander to the headrest also doubles as a shoulder strap allowing you to carry this from your vehicle to your job site and back with no problems what so ever.

Primary Arms - Ultimate Weapon Light (Gen 2)

Primary Arms - UWL

By Eric Janhunen

I've been in the market for a rifle mounted light option for awhile now.  After checking the usual suspects for something affordable, I Primary Arms - UWL 2went to the forums and that’s where I found the Primary Arms UWL (Ultimate Weapons Light).  The light comes with an integrated picatinny rail mount, multiple o-rings to seal things up and tight machine work.  I was also happy to see Streamlight batteries included to bring me the power needed to operate that light.  When I first saw this, my first thoughts were that this is a bit on the big side when you configure the housing to hold all 3 battery cells.  However, that was not the case.  The light may be a bit on the larger side, but not so much as to causing it to be a hinderance.  A small issue that I discovered is that I've yet to find a tape switch holder that will hold the switch to my rail.  This has caused me to improvise a bit.  From my research, I found that the rear housing and tailcap is outsourced. Primary Arms made the flashlight head and battery cell extension tube.  So sorry guys, this is not a 100% made USA product.  On the other hand, this sucker is bright at 450 lumens!  The UWL features one high power LED inside of an aluminum polished bezel flashlight head.  On a 16” bull barrel AR, there is slight muzzle shadow but it’s not enough to be an issue.  I find the beam to be sharp and very solid.  This makes the light comparable to some higher-end lights that I've used in the past.  With that being said, I think this is a great option for someone who wants to light up their life ( ha-ha) and not break the bank in doing so.  Primary Arms is on a lot of the AR and builder forums, so it’s clear that they listen to the customer base.  Overall, I have a feeling that these lights can only get better from an already solid system.

Midland XTC-300 Wearable Sport Camera Review

 Midland XTC-300

By Ryan Michad

Before I was able to buy my own guns, I was a camera junkie. I filmed hockey and football games all through high school, I created professionally edited accreditation videos for our neighboring towns and got the chance to work with many cameras.  I quickly developed personal preferences for how I liked my cameras to work for me. The things I want in a camera are surprisingly simple, yet it seems like many manufacturers struggle to make a camera the way I want it.  My perfect camera is simple; it is intuitive, and it doesn’t have many external controls. I want high-definition footage, and easy transferability between the camera and the computer. I want the ability to transfer videos on the SD card, or by connecting a cable directly from the camera to the computer. I want the files to be in a common format such as MPEG-4. I can say with complete confidence that the Midland XTC-300 is 99.999% of the way there to being my perfect camera. The Midland XTC-300 is an extremely portable, high definition camera that will suit the needs of any outdoorsman or other sport enthusiast that would like to capture their escapades.  The XTC-300 allows the end user to mount the camera in many different ways.  I have personally used the camera on an ATV helmet to do a shooting course that involved an ATV.  Using the submersible case for protection, the XTC delivered beautiful video and captured the whole experience from my point of view.  If you choose to use the XTC as a normal video camera on a tripod, it excels at that as well.  All of the reviews I have done for the Firearms Insider have used the XTC-300 exclusively for all the video work. The XTC-300 never missed a beat, and captured every moment perfectly. There is a video included above that is a compilation of footage captured with the XTC-300, from many mounting positions. This video shows you the versatility of the XTC-300 in action. I am extremely impressed with the Midland XTC-300, and I have recommended the camera to several people personally who were interested in purchasing a sport-style camera. It is an EXCELLENT BUY!

+ It records extremely clearly. The camera easily refocuses and handles light and dark situations well. + It is extremely light. Even when the camera is attached to something on your body or that you are using, its weight is negligible. + The sound quality of the camera is superb. I have tested this camera for the sound, filming my musical endeavors, and I am very impressed with the microphone on the camera. + The supplied accessories allow you to mount the camera in many different ways to suit whatever situation you may find yourself in. + The waterproof mount allows you to film in inclement weather conditions without fear of damaging the camera.

- When using the waterproof mount the sound quality is greatly diminished. This is no fault of the camera itself, but is just a result of the waterproof case needing to be completely solid. - There is no viewfinder. Note that these sport-type cameras typically do not have a viewfinder for space reasons and for battery life reasons. This not really a negative or any fault of the camera, but it is nice to be able to make sure that you got what you wanted in the shot when you’re out in the field.

Sig Sauer M11-A1

M11 A1 vs P228 side by side

By Kirby Yau

I’ve had a love affair with Sig Sauer P228 since I first saw it in the Clint Eastwood Secret Service action thriller In the Line of Fire. The compact P226 has been used in Hollywood hits like, the X-Files, The Sentinel, NCIS, and NCIS – LA. It’s mostly portrayed as the quintessential good guy Fed gun that only fed my desire.P228 Hand grip

When Sig Sauer announced in 2012 it was producing a new set of P228s, naming it the M11 A-1 and intentionally hyping it’s military pedigree; it garnered interest from me and other Sig admirers old and new. When technical specifications of the M11 A-1 were made public, the numbers indicated that the 2012 reissue of the M11-A-1 were merely P229s with P228 pressed into the handgrips.

Despite sharing the M11, military designation, the M11 A-1 shares more with the P229 than the Military/LEO issued M11/P228. Instead of a stamped steel slide, the M11 A-1 shares the milled stainless steel slide of the P229. The M11A-1/P229 weighs in at 32 oz., a whole ounce more than the P228.

M11 A1 vs P228 heightBoth weapons are the same height but the M11 A-1 is slightly thicker being built off of the P229 frame. P228 magazines are interchangeable with M11-A1 despite the M11-A1 shipping with P229-1 Magazines. P229-1 magazines will not work in the P228.M11 A1 UID sticker

All the Sig controls are where you expect them to be. The M11-A1 has a UID sticker which is more of a marketing gimmick than utilitarian.

The Key difference on the right side of the firearm includes the long extractor on the M11 A-1. Although the long extractor garners lots of bad Internet press, I experienced zero issues after putting 300 rounds through the barrel with all rounds feeding and extract properly.

M11 A1 trigger and controls

The short reach trigger/thin trigger is a deviation from the P228’s standard trigger, which is a welcome addition to my Medium-large hands. It felt very comfortable with every trigger pull, but I do miss the trigger ridges from the P228.

M11 A1 Night Sights

SIGLITE® Night Sights are standard on the M11 A-1 (left) and a bright and sharp compared to the same SIGLITE® Night Sights on the older P228. Understandable since the tritium inserts which dim after time.

A unique feature of the M11-A1 is the laser etched SIG insignia on the top of the slide. Personally I don’t think it adds or detracts to the design.

I really wanted to dislike the M11-A1 and treat it like the bastard child of the much beloved P228, but I really LOVE it.  I hate to say it but I feel it balances better than the P228 in my hand. I shoot it more accurately than the P228. I’m afraid to say it, but the M11-A1 is better than my P228.

The M11-A1 is a great value that includes features such as a Short Reset Trigger, night sights, chrome lined barrel, phosphate coated internals, and three magazines for a price similar to others in the P229.

Smart Firearms SF3

Smart Arms SF3 pic 1

By Steve Remy

One of the most dangerous things new and experienced shooters do, is draw their handgun from a holster and fire it at a target in a quick fashion.  Websites like YouTube are full of videos of beginners and experts shooting themselves during the holster draw and/or return process.  No matter how many times someone hears, “leave your finger off the trigger until ready to shoot”, it always seems to happen.  It's nearly impossible to critique yourself during the holstering process to be sure it never happens.  In the same fashion, unless someone is given the opportunity to train in a one-on-one environment, it is nearly impossible for an instructor to catch incidents of fingers being placed on the trigger before someone is ready to fire.

In walks the Smart Firearms SF3 training firearm.  The SF3 is a training device that gives near-immediate feedback to users who place their trigger finger on the trigger before they are ready to shoot.  When a user places their finger within the trigger guard and doesn'tSafe Arms SF3 pull the trigger to shoot within about 3/4 of a second, the SF3 sounds a fairly loud alarm to notify the user and any instructors in the area that a violation has occurred.  The SF3 is also smart enough to wait a few fractions of a second before sounding an alarm.  This allows users to pull the trigger and “engage” their target without the alarm sounding.  When the user pulls the trigger, a “bang” sound is emitted from the device.  As with a real handgun, users are given two options of what to do when they draw their weapons: 1. Keep their finger indexed on the frame of the handgun, or 2. place their finger on the trigger and pull it to simulate firing the handgun.

The SF3 mimics the shape and weight of a loaded Glock and fits holsters designed for the same.  I first tested the SF3 in a Safariland duty holster and the SF3 performed as designed.  I then tested the SF3 in a Galco leather concealed carry-type holster designed for concealment.  Within this holster the SF3 alarmed as if something within the holster was tripping the trigger guard sensor.  I retested the SF3 in a kydex concealment holster as well and it had the same problem alarming itself within the holster.  I attribute the false alarms to either an overly sensitive sensor, or the sensor design itself.  With the current design, even the slightest encroachment of anything (i.e. clothing, holster etc.) into the trigger guard seems to set it off.

Overall I really like the concept of the SF3 as a training device for firearms instructors and law enforcement trainers to use in their classes.  Given the problems I had with the sensor, holster selection for the SF3 is likely key to make it operate as designed.  I’d like toSafe Arms SF3 see a redesign of the sensor in which it only alarms when something passes the midway point within the trigger guard, which would reduce incidents of accidental alarms.  I’d also like to see a removable magazine and a slide capable of manipulation so users could practice reloading drills too.  In addition to this, as nitpicky as it may sounds, I’d also like to see a more realistic trigger pull and trigger reset.  This may seem minor, but the more realistic a training tool performs, the more likely users are to fall back on their training with the device.  Another neat feature built into the device is the ability to turn off the sensor and use the gun strictly for dry fire practice. This is yet another reason why a more realistic trigger pull and reset is important.

UPDATE: I spoke with the president of Smart Firearms (Mike Farrell) regarding the issues I had with the sensitivity of the sensor in concealment holsters.  Mike was extremely open and honest regarding the challenges they face with concealable holsters and their SF3.  Mike stated their target market at the present time was uniformed law enforcement officers and their training departments.  Typically these officers use holsters that have internal parts which don’t encroach within the trigger guard for retention.  This is why the sensor is designed the way it is.  There seems to be a compromise between sensor sensitivity and accurate performance.  Mike mentioned a multitude of variables that can affect the sensor from finger size to skin tone.  There is a fine line between dialing down sensitivity to reduce alarms in concealment holsters, and dialing it down too much which could miss actual trigger guard intrusions by users.

In the end, Mike admits that concealment holsters don’t work well with the SF3.   Which I can’t fault them for because their target market is presently uniformed law enforcement officers.  He indicated that Smart Firearms was in the process of redesigning certain attributes of the SF3 to make it more compatible with concealment holsters and non-LE users.  I’ll definitely keep my eye out for these redesigns because the potential target market of non-LE shooters has a lot to gain from a device like the SF3.  The training this device can reinforce is too good to limit to the LE community!

Remington 597

Remington 597

By Ken Cultraro

With 22LR ammunition beginning to return to store shelves, also returning is the opportunity to plink and practice at a reasonable cost.  With that in mind, my wife asked what I wanted for our anniversary.  I asked for a 22LR rifle and the one I selected was the Remington 597.

The day after receiving my gift, I headed straight to the range to give it a try.  I set it up on a Caldwell front bag and put in the neighborhood of 150 rounds through it that first day.  Right out of the box I was able to shoot fairly tight groups, 5 rounds each at 50 yards using CCI Standard Velocity rounds.  The 3-9 scope was very good and I sighted it in without too much effort.  There was only one misfeed and that was due to a bad round and not the rifle.  I departed the range quite happy with my new gift.

I returned the following week to confirm the zero on the scope and also try shooting the rifle offhand.  25 rounds off the Caldwell confirmed the zero and so I moved onto offhand.  The first thing I noticed was that the rifle was heavier than I expected.  That being said though, it felt solid in my hands and allowed me to take a confident stance.  The first few groups were not as tight as off the bag, but I attribute that more to my shakes than to the rifle.

Claim to fame:  Reliable, easy to shoot and reasonably priced.
